  • The impedance matching properties of infinite planar arrays of rectangular waveguides with dielectric plug loading and sheath covering are studied here. The effects of several involved parameters on the impedance matching of the phased array antenna are investigated by calculating the reflection coefficients numerically. The improvement of impedance matching and the appearance of forced surface wave resonances are also discussed.

  • We have analyzed the amplification of a signal wave in the optical parametric interactions of the pump, signal, and idler waves in planar waveguides, with the pump wave being Cerenkov radiation. Based on the coupled-mode theory, we have derived the first-order coupled-mode differential equations for no pump depletion. The equations can easily be solved numerically. The approximate analytical and numerical solutions of the equations show that the signal wave can be amplified parametrically.

  • After the successful extension of the rotating planar waveguide model to Wave Optics, where a clear identification between the angular velocity of one hypothetical waveguide and the phase differences between two points on the path of one bounded mode was found, an application of the model to explain the interference theory is presented. We demonstrate that, for two bounded modes to create an interference pattern, a constrain to the relative parameters among both is imposed by the fiber optics. This result, not reported in the literature up to date, provides a new horizon to understand the interaction light-light when propagated within optical fibers.

  • The environmental and mechanical reliability of planar lightwave circuit (PLC)-type optical splitter modules is investigated with references [1, 3]. The module is composed of Y-branching silica-based waveguides on Si connected to optical fiber with UV-curable adhesives and is packaged in a metal case which is filled with humidity-resistant resin. High optical performance such as low loss, low reflection, and thermal stability are obtained through the use of this fiber connection technique. Ten reliability tests including long-term environmental and mechanical and ALT test were carried out for more then ten $1{\times}32$ channel PLC splitter modules.

  • We propose a simple model to elucidate the dispersion behavior of spiraling modes on silver nanowire by finding correspondence parameters and building a simple equivalent relationship with the planar insulator-metal-insulator geometry. The characteristics approximated for the proposed structure are compared with the results from an exact solution obtained by solving Maxwell's equation in cylindrical coordinates. The effective refractive index for our proposed equivalent model is in good agreement with that for the exact solution in the 400-2000 nm wavelength range. In particular, when the radius of the silver nanowire is 100 nm, the calculated index shows typical improvements; the average percentage error for the real part of the effective refractive index is reduced to only 5% for the $0^{th}$ order mode (11.9% in previous results) and 1.5% for the $1^{st}$ order mode (24.8% in previous results) in the 400-800 nm wavelength range. This equivalent model approach is expected to provide further insight into understanding the important behavior of nanowire waveguides.

  • Silicon oxynitride (SiON) layers deposited upon a $SiO_2/Si$ buffer layer placed upon silicon wafers have been obtained by using PECVD from $SiH_4,\;N_2O$, and $N_2$. It can be seen that the refractive index, measured by using a prism coupler, for the SiON films can be varied between 1.4480 and 1.4958 at a wavelength of 1552 nm by changing the process parameters. Optical planar waveguides with a thickness of $6{\mu}m$ and a refractive index contrast ($\Delta$n) of $0.36\% have been deposited. Also, etching experiments were performed using ICP dry etching equipment on thick SiON films grown onto Si substrates covered by a thick $SiO_2$ buffer layer. A polarization maintaining single-mode fiber was used for the input and a microscope objective for the output at $1.55{\mu}m$. As a result, a low index contrast SiON based waveguide is fabricated with easily adjustable refractive index of core layer. It illustrates that the output intensity mode is a waveguiding single-mode.

  • This paper describes a low-loss, compact, 40-channel arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) which utilizes a monolithically integrated spot-size converter (SSC) for lowering the coupling loss between silica waveguides and standard single-mode fibers. The SSC is a simple waveguide structure that is tapered in both the vertical and horizontal directions. The vertically tapered structure was realized using a shadow-mask etching technique. By employing this technique, the fabricated, 40-channel, 100 GHz-spaced AWG with silica waveguides of 1.5% relative index-contrast showed an insertion-loss figure of 2.8 dB without degrading other optical performance.

  • We evaluate the optical characteristics of planar distributed feedback (DFB) waveguides with quarter-wavelength phase-shifter. To analyze explicitly its band-pass and resonance properties, we present and newly develop a modal transmission-line theory (MTLT) based on Floquet's theorem and Babinet's principle. The numerical results reveal that this approach offers a simple and analytic algorithm to analyze either the filtering or the oscillating characteristic of DFB gratings with quarter-wavelength phase-shifter, and has a novel physical insight that may not be achieved in other approximating approaches

  • Multimode planar waveguides have been fabricated by an electric-field assisted ion exchange in soda-lime glass substrates. Measurements of the mode indices have been made and the index profiles modeled on modified Fermi function are explained by a comparative analysis with the concentration profiles obtained using an electron probe X-ray micro analyzer. The analytical measurements showed that no more than 95% of sodium ions were replaced by the cesium ions. We established formulas for guide depth, mobility, and refractive index change, given the applied electric field, the diffusion temperature, and the time. We have verified the linear relations in the formulas not only between guide and root of diffusion time but also between guide depth and the applied electric filed experimentally.

  • Silver ion-exchanged glass waveguide with its large surface index difference and shallow depth is suitable to be used for the hybrid integration of semiconductor device and glass waveguide using the semiconductor film grafting technique. We report characteristics of the planar and channel glass waveguides exchanged in the diluted silver nitrate melt in the visible and infrared spectral region. Especially, we determined the fabrication parameters for single-mode channel waveguide at 1.5.$\mu$m, an important wavelength in the optical communication. Directional couplers with several different configurations were fabricated, and their 3 dB coupling length was determined as a function of wavelenGh and polarization.
