The Effect of Additives on Twining in ZnO Varistors

  • By comparison of the experimental results in two systems of ZnO varistors, it's appear that Sb2O3 is the indispensable element for twining in ZnO varistors and the Zn7Sb2O12 spinel acts as the nucleus to form twins. Al2O3 is not the origin of twining in ZnO varistor, but it was found that Al2O3 could strengthen the twining and form a deformation twining by ZnAl2O4 dragging and pinning effect. The inhibition ratios of grain and nonuniformity of two systems ZnO varistors increase with the increase of Al2O3 content. The twins affect the inhibition of grain growth, the mechanism could be explained follow as: twins increase the mobility viscosity of ZrO grain and grain boundary, and drag ZrO grain and liquid grain boundary during the sintering, then the grain growth is inhibited and the microstructure becomes more uniform.

  • Electromagnetic properties of $CeO_2$ doped and undoped YBaCuO superconductors were evaluated to investigate the effect of pinning center on the magnetization and magnetic shielding. The variation $\DeltaM$ with doping was maximum for 3% doping and decrease with further doping. The magnetic shielding was evaluated by measuring the induced voltage in secondary coil and the voltage initially set to 0.5V, decreased to 0.17V and 0.28V respectively for the undoped and 3% $CeO_2$ doped sample. The much less change in the induced voltage for the 3% doped sample is attributed to the increased flux shielding by shielding vortex current. The $CeO_2$ was converted to fine $BaCeO_3$ particles which were trapped in YBaCuO superconductor during the reaction sintering. The trapped fine particles, $BaCeO_3$ may be acted as a flux pinning center.

The Effect of Domain Wall on Defect Energetics in Ferroelectric LiNbO3 from Density Functional Theory Calculations

  • The energetics of defects in the presence of domain walls in $LiNbO_3$ are characterized using density-functional theory calculations. Domain walls show stronger interactions with antisite defects than with interstitial defects or vacancies. As a result, antisite defects act as a strong pinning center for the domain wall in $LiNbO_3$. Analysis of migration behavior of the antisite defects across the domain wall shows that the migration barrier of the antisite defects is significantly high, such that the migration of antisite defects across the domain wall is energetically not preferable. However, further study on excess electrons shows that the migration barrier of antisite defects can be lowered by changing the charge states of the antisite defects. So, excess electrons can enhance the migration of antisite defects and thus facilitate domain wall movement by weakening the pinning effect.

  • The conditions of zone-melting method such as a sample travel speed in a furnace, content of Nd422, control of melting temperature, and heat-treatment with/without Ar gas for $NdBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-\delta}$ superconductor was optimized, As a results, a $NdBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-\delta}$ sample with a surface area of $25mm^{2}$ showed a good superconducting properties when its travel speed was 6 mm/h, The improvement of superconductivity added with 10~20 wt% of Nd422 phase increasing pinning effect was also shown. The critical current density, $J_{c}$ was remarkable affected by the condition of heat-treatment temperature of $NdBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-\delta}$superconductor with/without Ar ambient gas.

  • The electrical characteristics of single-crystal composite superconductors produced by a melting process were studied by neutron irradiation. In order to improve the current characteristics of the YBa2Cu3O7-y superconductor, it is necessary to form an effective flux pinning center inside the superconductor. In this study, an increase in flux pinning was attempted through neutron irradiation onto YBa2Cu3O7-y superconductors. The neutron irradiation was performed at 30 MeV for 500 sec, The electrical properties of the superconductors were measured in a magnetic field of 5 Tesla at 50 K using a magnetic properties measurement system (MPMS). After neutron irradiation, the critical current density of the YBa2Cu3O7-y superconductor in a 1 Tesla magnetic field was 1×105 A/cm2. Once neutrons were irradiated at 30 MeV and 10 μA for 500 sec, the critical current density was observed to increase significantly. When neutrons are irradiated to a superconductor, micro-defects are created in the superconductor, and they act as flux pinning centers that hold the magnetic field generated when an electric current flows.

Influence of Ag nano-powder additions on the superconducting properties of Mg $B_2$ materials

  • Silver nano-powder was added to Ma $B_2$ to make (Ag)$_{(x)wt.%}$(Mg $B_2$)$_{(l00-x)wt.%}$ (A $g_{x}$-Mg $B_2$) (10 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 50) composite superconductors to investigate the effect of the Ag nano-powder on the vortex pinning. Pellets made out of the mixed powder were put inside stainless steel tubes, which were sintered at 85$0^{\circ}C$ in Ar atmosphere. No impurity phase was identified for as-rolled samples. However, both the Mg $B_2$ and the A $g_{x}$-Mg $B_2$ composite pellets, when sintered, contain small amount of Mg $B_4$ and MgAg impurity phases. From the magnetization study, it was found that the flux pinning was improved in the high magnetic field region (> 3 T) only when 10w/o Ag was added to Mg $B_2$. The "two step" structures in ZFC M(T) curve gradually increased as the amount of Ag added increased. Pinning centers can be created by adding a suitable amount of Ag nano-powder which is not too large to increase the decoupling between the Mg $B_2$ grains.crease the decoupling between the Mg $B_2$ grains.

Germanium-based pinning dopants for MgB2 bulk superconductors

  • Effects of the spherically shaped Ge and the rod-like carbon-coated Ge on the superconducting properties of $MgB_2$ were investigated. Pure Ge and carbon-coated Ge nano-powders were synthesized under the different amount of $CH_4$ (0 to 5 kPa) by using DC thermal plasma method. When the $CH_4$ was added ~100 nm sized Ge with a spherical shape changed to rod-like morphology with a diameter of ~30-70 nm and a length of ~400-500 nm. Also it was confirmed that thin carbon layers of a few nanometers were formed along the rod length and the agglomerated carbons were found on the edges of rods. Pure spherical Ge and Ge/C rods were mixed and milled with Mg & B precursor to form the doped $MgB_2$ bulk samples by the solid-state reaction method. Almost no change of $T_c$ was noticed for the pure Ge-added $MgB_2$, whereas $T_c$ was found to decrease with the Ge/C-added $MgB_2$ samples. It was found that the pure spherical Ge showed to have a negative effect on the flux pinning of $MgB_2$. However, Ge/C rods can enhance the flux pinning property of $J_c$ due to the coated carbon on Ge rods.

  • In this study, the effect of Nb contents and processing parameters on dynamic recrystallization behaviour of 0.15C-0.2Si-0.5Mn low-carbon steels was investigated. Three kinds of steel specimens with different Nb contents were fabricated and then high-temperature compressive deformation test was conducted by varying reheating temperature (RT), deformation temperature (DT), and strain rate (SR). The Nb2 and Nb4 specimens containing Nb had smaller prior austenite grain size than the Nb0 specimens, presumably due to pinning effect by the formation of carbides and carbonitrides precipitates at austenite grain boundaries. The high-temperature compressive deformation test results showed that dynamic recrystallization behavior was suppressed in the specimens containing Nb as the strain rate increased and deformation temperature decreased because of pinning effect by precipitates, grain boundary dragging effects by solute atoms, although the compressive stress increased with increasing strain rate and decreasing deformation temperature.

  • The present study deals with the effects of micro-alloying elements such as Ni, V, and Ti on the recrystallization behavior of carbon steels at different strain rates. Eight steel specimens were fabricated by varying the chemical composition and reheating temperature; then, a high-temperature compressive deformation test was conducted in order to investigate the relationship of the microstructure and the recrystallization behavior. The specimens containing micro-alloying elements had smaller prior austenite grain sizes than those of the other specimens, presumably due to the pinning effect of the formation of carbonitrides and AlN precipitates at the austenite grain boundaries. The high-temperature compressive deformation test results indicate that dynamic recrystallization behavior was suppressed in the specimens with micro-alloying elements, particularly at increased strain rate, because of the pinning effect of precipitates, grain boundary dragging and lattice misfit effects of solute atoms, although the strength increased with increasing strain rate.
