  • In this study, the flow and heat transfer of the aligned pin-fin array of the air cooling module for electronic packaging application were numerically analyzed with various fin shapes. The geometric cross-sectional shapes of pin-fins considered in this study were ellipse, wing and circle. The fins had same cross-sectional area and height, but they had different surface areas. As the results, the surface area, the heat transfer coefficient, and the heat transfer performance of pin-fins greatly depended on their shapes. Of the three types of pin-fins, the wing type pin-fin with suitable shape produced the best heat transfer performance. This result implies that the cooling capacity of the pin-fin cooler can be significantly enhanced only by the change of fin shape without increasing air flow-rate or fin density.

  • A cylindrical pin fin with variable diameter is analyzed by using the one dimensional analytical method. Heat loss and fin efficiency are presented as a function of the fin diameter, length and convection characteristic numbers ratio. The relationship between the fin diameter and convection characteristic number over the fin for the same amount of heat loss is shown. One of the results indicates the fin efficiency increases as the fin diameter increases while that decreases as the fin length increases.

  • A cylindrical pin fin with variable fin base thickness is optimized based on fixed outer radius by using the one dimensional analytic method. Heat loss from the pin fin with fixed outer radius is presented as a function of the fin length. The ratio of in length for optimum heat loss to that for the maximum heat loss is listed. The maximum heat loss and effectiveness and the fin length for the optimum heat loss are presented as a function of fin base thickness and outer radius. One of the results presents the maximum effectiveness decreases rapidly first and then decreases slowly as the fin outer radius increases.

  • Currently, unmanned military vehicles under development in Korea have more devices to carry out various missions, and interface cables between them are also increasing. In addition, due to a small space problem inside the unmanned vehicle, devices are required to be miniaturized and integrated. For two reasons, connectors also need to be selected, which makes them vulnerable to noise due to the closer distance between the pins. In this paper, we analyzed how much the magnetic field produced by noise at the connector pin where cable twist is released affects the surrounding pin and presented the guide for optimal pin placement. First, the effect of magnetic field is greater than the crosstalk between pin and pin. Second, the magnetic field on both sides between + and - is strong when approaching one step with noise source. Third, the magnetic field strength is improved when setting the ground pin as the ground pin between the noise and the original signal when approaching the A noise source and the two steps. Fourth, in the case of a differential mode communication, the optimal placement area of the sensitive signal was presented according to positions Tx± and Rx±.

  • By replacing the previous metal connector on the joints of timber structure, the GFRP reinforced laminated wooden pin was produced using a wooden material and Glass fiber reinforced plastic(GFRP) composite laminate. In addition, using the reinforced wooden pin, the tensile type shear strength test was conducted. Based on the result of the bending strength test of the reinforced laminated wooden pin according to the GFRP arrangement, a specimen(Type-A) with a single insertion of GFRP for each layer have shown the most favorable performance. Also, it was verified that densified specimen hot pressed for an hour at the temperature of $150^{\circ}C$ and with the oppression pressure $1.96N/mm^2$ have shown the improved performance of 1.57 times than the specimen without the densification. And in the bending strength test considering the load direction, edgewise have shown a higher performance of 3.51 times than the flatwise. A shear strength test was conducted using the Type-A reinforced laminated wooden pin which have shown a moderate performance on the test. Based on the test conducted by differentiating the type of the joint plate and the connector, compared to the specimen(Type-DS) applied with the drift pin and steel plate, the specimen( Type-WL) applied with the GFRP reinforced laminated wooden pin and GFRP reinforced wooden laminated plate have shown 1.12 times higher shear strength and also have shown an excellent toughness even after the maximum load.

  • In this paper, we propose a design method that the crosstalk of probe connector pins satisfy the limitation of -30 dB. The parameters(inductance and capacitance) were extracted in the grid-structured probe connector pin system, and it is shown that the new parameters are easily calculated with increasing ground pin numbers using the previously calculated parameters. In addition, the crosstalk reduction algorithm by employing more grounds around the signal pin has been suggested, and it is confirmed that the suggested method is quite effective especially for the reduction of inductive couplings. Finally, we suggested the correlation between the pitch and the length of the pins to satisfy the crosstalk limitation of -30 dB with the given number of ground pins, which will be quite useful when design a probe connector pin system.

  • A cylindrical secondary Li-ion cell is a device in which stored chemical energy is converted to electrical energy via an electrochemical reaction. These cells are widely used for applications that require high capacity and rate power, such as notebooks, power tools, and electric vehicles. The role of a center pin is to retain the channel for gas release, preventing blockage of the hollow of the jelly roll during a charge-discharge cycle, and to prevent an internal short circuit for tearing of separator under mechanical free fall. In this paper, two experiments are conducted with and without the center pin to experimentally verify the importance of the role of the center pin. The first experiment is a 50-cycle charge-discharge cycle test, and the second is a free fall test conducted according to the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) standards. Based on these experiments, we demonstrate that the center pin in a cylindrical cell is a very important component in terms of safety.

  • This research analyzed the acoustic emission signals collected from the pin loading tests and investigated the effect of hygrothermal exposure on the fracture behavior of the pin-jointed carbon fiber/epoxy composites. The composite specimens include: the Base specimen that has not been exposed to any environments, the RT specimen that has been immersed in room temperature water, and the HT specimen that has been immersed in high temperature water. According to the pin loading test, the RT and the HT specimens showed 2.2% and 13% decreases in the bearing strength compared to the Base specimen, respectively. The analysis of the acoustic emission signals showed different fracture acceleration points for three types of the specimens. Furthermore, for the RT and the HT specimens, the event from the matrix crack signals in the composites decreased. This shows the effect of the hygrothermal conditions on the acoustic emission signals. Additionally, upon investigating the fracture behaviors of the pin-jointed composites, the exposing specimens to hygrothermal environments decreases the interfacial characteristics of the composites.

  • A cylindrical pin fin with inside fluid is optimized based on fixed fin volume by using the one dimensional analytic method. Heat loss from the fin and the pin fin radius for fixed fin volume is presented as a function of the fin length. Temperature variation of the fin with the variation of ambient and inside fluid convection characteristic numbers and fin base thickness is listed. The maximum heat loss at the practical fin length and corresponding optimum fin length and radius are presented as a function of fin base thickness, inside convection characteristic number, fin volume and ambient convection characteristic number. One of the results shows that the optimum pin fin shape becomes relatively fatter as the fin volume increases.
