Fifteen young pigs were used in this study. The animals were divided into three groups 1. Group for removal of the temporal muscle, 2. Group for removal of the masseter muscle, 3, Group for removal of masseter and internal pterygoid muscles. The animals were anesthetized with $3.5\%$ chloral hydrate intraperitoneally. In the right side the head was shaved. The masticatory muscle was removed. The animals were sacrificed four months later. The head was separated from trunk and cleaned by boiling in a solution of potassium hydroxide. The results were as follows; 1. In the group for removal of the temporal muscle, the Coronoid process of the mandible was resorbed. 2. In the group for removal of the masseter muscle, there was produced asymmetrical growth of the mandible, attrition of the molar teeth in the control side, and resorption of the mandibular angle. 3. In the group for removal of the Masseter and Internal muscles, the changes were more severe than that of the group for removal of the masseter muscle. The mandibular angle was completely absent. 4. The growth of the bone seems definitely related to the presence of the muscular tissue actively pulling upon it.
The Autofom is a equipment for predicting the amount of pig carcasses meat using the 16 ultrasonic sensors to measure in real time and it was established in Dodram LPC in Gyeonggi Province of Korea for the first time. This study was carried out to validate the reliability of Autofom statistically and to establish guideline for developing a analytic formula through comparing the measurement between Autofom and dissection. The ham parts of sixty-six pig carcasses were measured with Autofom and by two experimental performers. The weight means and standard deviations of ham parts including bone by measurements with Autofom and dissection were $10.69{\pm}0.81kg$ and $10.77{\pm}0.94kg$, respectively a strong positive correlation (P<0.01) was identified, with a coefficient of determination ($R^2$) of 0.82. The weight means and standard deviations of lean ham parts by measurements with Autofom and dissection were $7.41{\pm}0.58kg$ and $7.42{\pm}0.89kg$, respectively a strong positive correlation (P<0.01) was identified, with a coefficient of determination ($R^2$) of 0.72. The root mean square errors of two groups were 0.40 and 0.50, respectively.
Purpose : To investigate the relationship between three-dimensional (3D) bone imaging parameters and trabecular strength in the mandible. Materials and Methods : Bone specimens were obtained from the mandibles of five male pigs weighing around 110 kg each. Of those, 43 samples were selected for 3D analysis and measured by micro-computed tomography. The five morphometric parameters were trabecular thickness (Tb.Th), bone specific surface (BS/BV), percent bone volume (BV/TV), structure model index (SMI) and degree of anisotropy (DA). Through destructive mechanical testing, strength parameters were obtained. Results : BV/TV, SMI, BS/BV, and Tb.Th showed significant correlations with strength parameters. DA did not show any correlation with the other parameters. In multiple linear regression analysis, BV/TV alone explained $43\%$ of the variance in Young's modulus. By stepwise inclusion of SMI, the variance in the Young's modulus was better explained up to $52\%$. Conclusions : Predicting trabecular strength in the mandible through architectural analysis would be possible. Further study is needed to establish the tendency and variety of trabecular architecture and strength according to the locations within the mandible.
In order to observe the responses of the periodontal tissue on the tension side following the experimental tooth movement, 35 Guinea pigs were divided into the control group (5 animals) and 6 experimental groups (3 movement groups and 3 retention groups) consisting of each 5 animals. The experimental tooth movement of Guinea pig's upper incisors installing open helical loop were carried out by rendering continuous force : 5g (1st groups) 35g (2nd groups), 100g (3rd groups), respectively for 7 days. 3 movement groups (15 animals) were sacrificed soon after the continuous force, and 3 retention groups (15 animals) were sacrificed after the retention period of another 7 days. The following results were obtained from the observation of the surrounding tissues of teeth on the tension side through light microscopy any transmission electron microscopy. 1. The vessel walls in the experimental groups were thinner than those of the control group, the number of blood vessel had the tendency to increase. The greater the strong force applied to each group, the more the destruction of cells and fibers was found and the more the number of the red blood cell of vessel outside appeared. 2. New collagen fibers were produced from fibroblasts in the 1st groups (light force), but were produced rather less in the 2nd groups (medium force) and the 3rd groups (heavy force). 3. In the forming patterns of the new alveolar bone of the 3rd groups (heavy force), the bone trabeculae were formed towards the direction of the force to be applied, but the new alveolar bone in the 1st groups (light force) was produced evenly throughout the all surfaces of the alveolar bone rather than the patterns of bone trabeculae ; therefore, the patterns of new alveolar bone were observed differently according to the magnitude of the force applied. 4. In the retention group, it was observed that the collagen fibers were produced from the osteoblasts in the marginal areas of the periodontal ligaments being widely opened and were deposited on the alveolar bone surface but the production of collagen fibers from the osteoblasts in the other area of the periodontal ligaments was almost ceased, and a rest line on the new alveolar bone surface was found.
The nonobese diabetic / severe combined immune deficiency (NOD/SCID) has been used for determination of proliferation and differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells as xenotransplantation animal model. In this study, we transplanted porcine hematopoietic cells from bone marrow into NOD/SCID mice via intravenous injection to confirm the activity of differentiation and proliferation for porcine hematopoietic cells in vivo. Interestingly, we observed the result of high efficiency with pig T lymphocytes in hematopoietic organs, liver, spleen lymph node, and bone marrow in NOD/SCID mice. The porcine $CD3^{+}$ T cells were detected with $5.4{\pm}1.9%$ in bone marrow, $15.4{\pm}7.3%$ in spleen, $21.3{\pm}1.4%$ in liver, and $33.5{\pm}32.8%$ in lymph node of NOD/SCID mice at 6 weeks after trans-plantation Furthermore, immunohistochemical analysis showed the high engraftment of porcine T lymphocytes in spleen of NOD/SCID mice. Our data suggest that NOD/SCID mice are excellent animal model to determinate the generation md function of pig T lymphocytes.
An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of feeding fresh cassava roots on the performance and carcass quality of pigs raised from $15{\pm}1kg$ to 85 kg live weight. Fresh unpeeled cassava roots were chopped into chips and offered separately along with a protein concentrate made up of copra cake and meat and bone meal, and a local mineral-vitamin premix. Commercial pig grower and finisher diets served as control. A total of 24 pigs were used in an incomplete randomized split-plot design experiment. Pigs fed fresh cassava-based diet grew as fast, 0.78 vs 0.77 kg/day, and were as efficient, 3.74 vs 3.77 in converting feed into body weight gain as those fed the commercial control diet. Similarly, there were no differences in carcass quality measured in terms of dressing percentage, 77 vs 77; backfat thickness, 2.76 vs 2.78 cm; loin eye muscle area, 29.2 vs $29.1cm^2$ and in the relative proportions of the different carcass cuts between the two dietary treatments. The use of fresh cassava along with the protein and the local mineral-vitamin premix however, resulted in lowered total feed cost and cost per unit of live weight gain. It is concluded that fresh cassava roots can be fed along with copra cake, meat and bone meal protein concentrate and a local mineral-vitamin premix to fattening pigs with no adverse affects on performance and carcass quality.
Purpose: The aim of this study is to compare the stability between Mg-incorporated implant, TiUnite and Machined implant. Materials and Methods: Premolars of 3 Mini pigs (24 months) were extracted. After 2 months later, total 27 fixtures of implants (9 of each design : Machined/ TiUnite/ Mg-incorporated) were inserted into the mandible of 3 mini-pig. Implant stability was estimated by RFA in installation to 2, 4 & 6 weeks. Statistical analysis of RFA values was performed with time and between groups using repeated measure ANOVA and turkey's multiple comparison test. Results: In analyzing the mean value for the observation periods, three types of implants yielded a slight decrease in RFA mean value after 2 week, followed by increase at 4-6 weeks. Mg incorporated oxidized implants demonstrated significantly higher RFA mean values at 6 weeks comparing other groups. The difference of RFA value with time and between groups was statistically significant. Conclusion: We concluded that Mg implants may reduce failure rates of clinical implants In the early period of bone healing and Mg implants may shorten the bone healing time from surgery to functional loading.
Background: Antiallergic effect of 20(S)-protopanaxatriol (PPT), an intestinal metabolite of ginseng saponins, was investigated in guinea pig lung mast cells and mouse bone marrow-derived mast cells activated by a specific antigen/antibody reaction. Methods: Increasing concentrations of PPT were pretreated 5 min prior to antigen stimulation, and various inflammatory mediator releases and their relevant cellular signaling events were measured in those cells. Results: PPT dose-dependently reduced the release of histamine and leukotrienes in both types of mast cells. Especially, in activated bone marrow-derived mast cells, PPT inhibited the expression of Syk protein, cytokine mRNA, cyclooxygenase-1/2, and phospholipase $A_2$ ($PLA_2$), as well as the activities of various protein kinase C isoforms, mitogen-activated protein kinases, $PLA_2$, and transcription factors (nuclear factor-${\kappa}B$ and activator protein-1). Conclusion: PPT reduces the release of inflammatory mediators via inhibiting multiple cellular signaling pathways comprising the $Ca^{2+}$ influx, protein kinase C, and $PLA_2$, which are propagated by Syk activation upon allergic stimulation of mast cells.

Purpose: The present study was performed to evaluate the effect of surface treatment of the cervical area of implant on bone regeneration in fresh extraction socket following implant installation. Materials and methods: The four minipigs, 18 months old and 30 kg weighted, were used. Four premolars of the left side of both the mandible and maxilla were extracted. ${\phi}$3.3 mm and 11.5 mm long US II plus implants (Osstem Implant co., Korea) with resorbable blasting media (RBM) treated surface and US II implants (Osstem Implant co., Korea) with machined surface at the top and RBM surface at lower portion were installed in the socket. Stability of the implant was measured with $Osstell^{TM}$ (Model 6 Resonance Frequency Analyser: Integration Diagnostics Ltd., Sweden). After 2 months of healing, the procedures and measurement of implant stability were repeated in the right side by same method of left side. At four months after first experiment, the animals were sacrificed after measurement of stability of all implants, and biopsies were obtained. Results: Well healed soft tissue and no mobility of the implants were observed in both groups. Histologically satisfactory osseointegration of implants was observed with RBM surface, and no foreign body reaction as well as inflammatory infiltration around implant were found. Furthermore, substantial bone formation and high degree of osseointegration were exhibited at the marginal defects around the cervical area of US II plus implants. However, healing of US II implants was characterized by the incomplete bone substitution and the presence of the connective tissue zone between the implant and newly formed bone. The distance between the implant platform (P) and the most coronal level of bone-to-implant contact (B) after 2 months of healing was $2.66{\pm}0.11$ mm at US II implants group and $1.80{\pm}0.13$mm at US II plus implant group. The P-B distance after 4 months of healing was $2.29{\pm}0.13$mm at US II implants group and $1.25{\pm}0.10$mm at US II plus implants group. The difference between both groups regarding the length of P-B distance was statistically significant(p<0.05). Concerning the resonance frequency analysis (RFA) value, the stability of US II plus implants group showed relatively higher RFA value than US II implants group. Conclusion: The current results suggest that implants with rough surface at the cervical area have an advantage in process of bone regeneration on defect around implant placed in a fresh extraction socket.
