  • This paper presents the characteristics of the radial nitration of cylindrical piezoelectric transducers. The differential equations of piezoelectric radial motion have been derived in terms of the radial displacement and electric potential, which are functions of the radial and axial coordinates. Applying mechanical and electrical boundary conditions has yielded the characteristic equation of radial vibration. Numerical results of the natural frequencies have been compared with the experimental observations reported earlier for the transducers of several sizes, and have shown a good agreement for the fundamental mode. The paper discusses the dependence of the natural frequencies on the radius and thickness of the piezoelectric cylinders and the difference between Piezoelectric and elastic resonances.

  • Electro-Active paper (EAPap) is a new smart material that has a potential to be used in biomimetic actuator and sensor. It is made by cellulose that is abundant material in nature. EAPap is fascinating with its biodegradability, lightweight, large displacement, high mechanical strength and low actuation voltage. Actuating mechanism of EAPap is known to be the combined effects of ion migration and piezoelectricity. However, the electromechanical actuation mechanisms are not yet to be established. This paper presents the modeling of the actuation behavior of water infused cellulose samples and their composite dielectric constants calculated by Maxwell-Wagner theory. Electro-mechanical forces were calculated using Maxwell stress tensor method. Bending deflection was evaluated from simple beam model and compared with experimental observation, which result good correlation with each other.

  • The most common type of the piezoelectric energy harvester is the cantilevered beam since it is attached to the host structure and tuned to the frequency of the base excitation easily. However, the excessive strain at the fixed end of cantilevered beam causes some problems such as fatigue and durability. The use of higher vibration modes of the cantilevered beam may reduce the concentration of the strain at the fixed end since the strains of higher modes are distributed along the span. The results show that the use of high vibration mode is not efficient for power generation, but it reduces the excessive strain lever at typical region to prevent the failure by fatigue.

  • An interface crack of a piezoelectric medium bonded between an elastic layer and a half-space is analyzed using the theory of linear piezoelectricity. Both out-of-plane mechanical and in-plane electrical loads are applied to the piezoelectric laminate. By the use of courier transforms, the mixed boundary value problem is reduced to a singular integral equation which is solved numerically to determine the stress intensity factors. Numerical analyses for various material combinations are performed and the results are discussed.

  • This study presents an investigation of the characteristics of piezoelectric sensors whose main utilization is to measure impact pressure. The piezoelectric sensors were tested from several points of view. Their characteristics were investigated for repeatability, the effect of the diameter, temperature effect, water purity, flush mounting, and AC and DC coupling. Out of these, it was revealed that the temperature effect is very significant. The characteristics of the AC and DC coupling are also very important in understanding the time history of the impact pressure.

  • ZnO nanowires were grown by hydrothermal synthesis process and piezoelectric poly vinylidene fluoride (PVDF) was then coated on top of the ZnO-nanowires by spray-coating technique. The composite layer of ZnO-nanowires/PVDF was applied to an energy harvesting device based on piezoelectric-conversion mechanism. A defined mechanical force was given to the nanogenerator device to evaluate their electric power generation characteristics, where output current density and voltage were examined. Electric power generation property of the ZnO-nanowires/PVDF based nanogenerator device was compared to that of the nanogenerator device with ZnO-nanowires as single active layer. Effect of the ZnO-nanowires on improvement of power generation was discussed to examine its feasibility for the nanogenerator device.

  • Lead zirconate titanate/poly-vinylidene fluoride (PZT/PVDF) piezoelectric devices were fabricated by incorporating carbon nanotubes (CNTs), for use as flexible energy harvesting devices. CNTs were added to maximize the formation of the ${\beta}$ phase of PVDF to enhance the piezoelectricity of the devices. The phase transition of PVDF induced by the addition of CNTs was confirmed by analyzing the X-ray diffraction patterns, scanning electron microscopy images, and atomic force microscopy images. The enhanced output efficiency of the PZT/PVDF piezoelectric devices was confirmed by measuring the output current and voltage of the fabricated devices. The maximum output current and voltage of the PZT/PVDF piezoelectric devices was 200 nA and 350 mV, respectively, upon incorporation of 0.06 wt% CNTs.

  • Using the theory of linear piezoelectricity, we consider the problem of piezoelectric ceramic infinite strip containing a finite crack with free surface traction and surface charge under anti-plane shear. The crack is symmetrically parallel to the edges of infinite strip. Fourier transforms are used to reduce the problem to two pairs of dual integral equations, which are then expressed in terms of Fredholm integral equations of the second kind. Numerical results for PZT-5H ceramic are obtained and discussed.

  • This study focused on investigating the effect of aligned cellulose fibers to the performance of EAPap actuator. The performance of EAPap is dependant on the material direction of cellulose film. Electrospinning was used to improve material directionality of EAPap. DMAc cellulose solution which cotton pulp was resolved in DMAc solvent was used for electrospinning cellulose film. To increase directionality of nano fibers, the Electrospun film was stretched by 10 % strain during drying process. Induced in-plane strain of Electrospun EAPap was proportional to the applied voltage and larger than that of spincast EAPap. It is concluded that the performance of EAPap was improved by aligning cellulose fibers.

  • This paper deals with the vibration characteristics of stacked transducers composed of piezoelectric discs, which are main elements of ultrasonic sensors or actuators. The stacked transducers were devised in the sense of natural frequencies. Two- or three-layer transducers were fabricated with piezoelectric discs of different diameters. The natural frequencies were determined by the finite element analysis and they were verified by comparing them with experimental results. It appeared that the natural frequencies of the stacked piezoelectric transducers include the natural frequencies of the constituent piezoelectric discs and the natural frequencies caused by stacking. Based on these results, it would be possible to predict the vibration characteristics of the stacked piezoelectric transducers in a design process.
