Development of an Impedance Matching Layer in an Ultrasound Transducer with Gradient Properties

  • The piezocomposite transducer is widely used because it is highly efficient in transforming electric energy into mechanical energy, and its frequency range is broader than that of other types of ultrasound transducers. A general piezocomposite transducer is composed of an acoustic lens, impedance matching layers, piezoelectric materials, and backing layers. When an input voltage is applied to a piezoelectric material as an active material, it generates sound waves while vibrating. At that time, an impedance matching layer helps the sound waves to propagate forward while reducing the impedance mismatch that may occur at the interface between the active material and its front material. The impedance mismatch has a negative effect on the signal of an ultrasound transducer; thus, it is important to design a matching layer to overcome the issue. In this study, an optimized feature of a matching layer with gradient properties is studied. An objective function is defined to minimize both the average and the deviation of the reflection coefficients that are functions of the frequencies. As a result, an improvement in the signal characteristics with respect to the sensitivity and bandwidth is reported.

  • 일반적인 하나 또는 두개의 압전소자를 사용하는 트랜스듀서에 비하여 다수의 압전소자를 사용하는 어레이 트랜스듀서는 각 압전소자에 가해지는 펄스의 지연시간을 제어함으로써 초음파 빔을 임의의 지점에 집속시킬 수 있고 기계적 구동없이 임의의 방향으로 조향시켜 실시간 주사를 할 수 있는 장점이 있다. 페이즈드 어레이 트랜스듀서의 설계조건은 압전소자의 수. 압전소자의 크기 그리고 압전소자 사이 간격 등 여러가지가 있으며, 본 연구에서는 그 중에서 압전소자수의 변화에 따른 초음파 빔의 특성을 호이겐스의 원리를 이용한 수평횡파의 시뮬레이션을 통하여 평가하였다. 그 결과 초음파 빔은 조향각이 증가 할수륵 음압이 감소하며, 초음파 빔 특성도 점차적으로 분산됨을 알 수 있었고 또한, 초점거리가 증가할수록 초점에서의 집속효과는 감소하고, 압전소자의 수가 증가되면 집속효과는 향상됨을 알 수 있었다.

Dicing-Filling 방법으로 제작된 1-3 압전복합변환자의 특성 (Characteristics of The 1-3 Piezoelectric Composite Transducer Manufactured by Dicing-Filling Method)

  • 압전 세라믹 PZT와 고분자 매질인 에폭시 수지를 사용하여 PZT 체적비가 75%인 1-3 압전복합변환자를 dicing-filling 방법으로 제작하여 임피던스 분석과 펄스 반사법으로 수신된 초음파신호의 스펙트럼 분석을 통하여 전기 및 음향 특성을 조사하였다. 제작된 1-3 압전복합변환자의 경진동 모드 및 두께진동 모드의 기본진동수는 각각 0.95MHz와 1.63MHz이었고, 측면진동 모드는 관찰되지 않았다. 두께진동 모드에 대한 전기기계 결합계수는 PZT 단일상(0.52)보다 큰 0.54로 수신효율이 향상되었음을 알 수 있었다. 그리고 기계적 품질계수(Q)는 PZT 단일상(80)보다 상당히 작은 1.5이었고, 1-3 압전복합변환자의 축상 분해능이 크게 향상되었음을 알 수 있었다.

  • Piezoelectric micro-machined ultrasonic transducers for highly directional speaker need DC bias voltage. Most existing power amplifiers are not suitable for use in highly directional transducers because they are based on AC. In addition, since the piezoelectric micro-machined ultrasonic transducer has a large capacitive reactance, the power efficiency of the power amplifier is very low. Thus this paper proposes a new high efficiency power amplifier with DC bias voltage. In addition, by designing a matching circuit to compensate the capacitive reactance of the micro-machined ultrasonic transducer, the power efficiency of the power amplifier increases. The operating characteristics of the proposed power amplifier was verified by an experimental prototype. The proposed power amplifier is expected to be widely used in designing and implementing other related power amplifiers.

마이크로 스테이지의 유한요소해석 (A Study on the Optimal Structural Design using FEM for Micro Stage)

  • For optimal design of micro stage, we measured the displacement of piezoelectric transducer that was based on voltage value. And the micro stage was analyzed using FEM with displacement data including voltage value of piezoelectric transducer. For verification of analysis results, the displacements were measured by using Laser-interferometer. And researchers confirmed to propriety on design of micro stage with FEM, we obtained 3.5% error rate between measurement results and analyzing results.

  • In this study, Object restoration of ultrasonic transducer fabricated with porous piezoelectric ceramics using Modified SCL(Simple Competitive Learning) neural networks are presented. Using the acquired object data $16{\times}16$ pixels, Modified SCL neural networks using the $16{\times}16$ low resolution image was used for object restoration of $32{\times}32$ high resolution image. The experimental results show that the ultrasonic transducer fabricated with porous piezoelectric ceramics could be applied for sonar system.

링형 압전 변환기의 면내 진동 특성 (In-plane Vibration Characteristics of Piezoelectric Ring Transducers)

  • This paper experimentally deals with the vibration characteristics of flat ring transducers used for ultrasonic sensors and actuators. Radial vibration mode, which is the fundamental mode of a thin piezoelectric transducer, was measured by a laser in-plane vibrometer. An impedance analyzer was used to measure natural frequencies. The results measured by experiments verified theoretical predictions. The vibration characteristics of ring transducers were identified according to the outer diameter size. The shape of the fundamental mode is almost uniform but slightly decreases from the inner to the outer circumferential surfaces. The natural frequency of the fundamental mode decreases as the outer diameter increases. It appears that the ring type transducer is suitable to excite uniformly distributed vibration on a flat surface.

  • One of the major problems limiting the accuracy of piezoelectric transducers fur cylinder pressure measurements in an internal combustion (IC) engine is the thermal shock. Thermal shock is generated from the temperature variation during the cycle. This temperature variation results in contraction and expansion of the diaphragm and consequently changes the force acting on the quartz in the pressure transducer An empirical equation for compensation of the thermal shock error was derived from consideration of the diaphragm thermal deformation and actual pressure data. The result indicate that the thermal shock equation provides reliable correction based on known surface temperature swing.

  • In this study, the piezoelectric transducers with 1-3 connectivity have maded. A piezoelectric ceramic PZT prepared by Wet-Dry Combination method is used as a filler in Eccogel polymer matrix. The pulse-echo response for 1-3 type composite transducers were carried out in water. It was observed that the transmitting and receiving sensitivity of 1-3 type composite transducers were improved in comparison with that or solid PZT transducer. The reason is for that 1-3 composites have a hish piezoelectric voltage coefficients, The period of pulse-echo response for the transducer is in a good agreement with the resonant frequency of self-maded composite transducer.

  • In this study, the physical properties of the acoustic element and case with metal-piezoelectric ceramics were analyzed. The dielectric and piezoelectric properties of 0.5 wt% MnO$_2$ and NiO doped 0.1Pb(Mg$_{1}$3/Nb$_{2}$3/)O$_3$-0.45PbTiO$_3$-0.45PbZrO$_3$ceramics were investigated aiming at acoustic transducer applications. The vibration characteristics for the laminated circular plate was analyzed for the various thickness and diameter of the piezoceramic layer and metal layer. Also, the acoustic characteristics for the geometrical form of case have been investigated. The design and fabrication method worked in this paper can be utilized in development of actuator and acoustic device.
