  • In this study, the method of the finite element modeling for free vibration control of beam-type smart structures with bonded plate-type piezoelectric sensors and actuators is proposed. Constitutive equations for the direct piezoelectric effect and converse piezoelectric effect of piezoelectric materials are considered. By using the variational principle, the equations of motion for the smart beam finite element are derived, The proposed 2-node beam finite element is an isoparametric element based on Timoshenko beam theory. Therefore, by analyzing beam-type smart structures with smart beam finite elements, it is possible to simulate the control of the structural behavior by applying voltages to piezoelectric actuators and monitoring of the structural behavior by sensing voltages of piezoelectric sensors. By using the smart beam finite element and constant-gain feed back control scheme, the formulation of the free vibration control for the beam structures with bonded plate-type piezoelectric sensors and actuators is proposed.

  • Thin-walled adaptive structures render a large and important group of adaptive structures. Typical material system used for them is a composite laminate that includes piezoelectric material based sensors and actuators. The piezoelectric active elements are in the form of thin patches bonded onto or embedded into the structure. Among different types of patches, the paper considers those polarized in the thickness direction. The finite element method (FEM) imposed itself as an essential technical support for the needs of structural design. This paper gives a brief description of a developed shell type finite element for active/adaptive thin-walled structures and the element is, furthermore, used as a tool to consider the aspect of mesh distortion over the surface of actuators and sensors. The aspect is of significance for simulation of behavior of adaptive structures and implementation of control algorithms.

  • In this study, a new smart beam finite element is proposed for the finite element modeling of the beam-type smart structure with bonded plate-type piezoelectric sensors and actuators. Constitutive equations far the direct piezoelectric effect and converse piezoelectric effect of piezoelectric materials are considered. By using the variational principle, the equations of motion for the smart beam finite element are derived. The presented 2-node beam finite element is isoparametric element based on Timoshenko beam theory. The validity of the proposed beam element is shown through comparing the analysis results of the verification examples with those of other previous researches. Therefore, by analyzing smart structures with smart beam finite elements, it is possible to simulate the control of the structural behavior by piezoelectric actuators with applied voltages and the monitoring of the structure behavior by piezoelectric sensors with sensed voltages.

  • This paper is concerned with the development of the vibration isolation system using piezoelectric actuators and sensors. The active vibration absorber system consists of 4 pairs of PZT actuators bonded on aluminum plates making s- shaped device. Hence, the active system is directly connected to the passive system. The rubber attached to the end of the beam is connected to the upper base as a structural member. It allows bending thus maximizing the vertical movement generated by the piezoceramic actuators. • This paper proposes an identification method for modes of a thin plate where multiple actuators and sensors are bonded. When a natural frequency of a mode is decoupled from all other natural frequencies, the mode can be identified separatedly with a bandpass filter. Since a thin plate has resonant peaks at natural frequencies, the bandpass filter can be designed to extract the signal of the mode to be identified. Parameters of the second order linear differential equation of the mode can be obtained to apply the Least square method to the extract the modal signal. The proposed identification method is applied to an all-clamped plate with two pairs of piezoelectric actuators and sensors. The outputs of the identified model match with the experimental data well.

  • This paper investigates optimal locations of piezoelectric actuators and sensors on a thin plate. To locate actuators and sensors properly is important in controlling modal vibrations well. A piezoelectric sensitivity index is introduced to select optimal locations for vibration control of each mode. The sensitivity expresses the efficiency of actuating and sensing modal forces according to locations of a piezoelectric material on a plate. The piezoelectric sensitivities for two types of plate, an all-clamped plate, and a free-free plate, are derived theoretically and are verified experimentally. Also, its usefulness Is experimentally shown to control vibration of the all-clamped plate with piezoelectric materials.

  • Undesired vibratory motion of a simply supported plate is controlled with piezoelectric sensors and actuators. Appropriate dynamic equations of the sensor and actuator are derived and coupled with the dynamic equation of the plate for the construction of an active feedback vibration control system. Analytic solutions are obtained for amplitude response of the plate, reflecting the combined effect of external driving forces and piezoelectric control moments. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of this approach for two types of external forces, i.e. a concentrated point load and a piezoelectric plate driver. Calculation results show that the sensors and actuators can be efficient tools to mitigate the sensitivity of the structure to external sources of vibration. The method investigated in this work is applicable to arbitrary external loading conditions and control algorithms.
