Piezoelectric and Dielectric Properties of Low Temperature Sintering Pb(Zn1/2W1/2)O3-Pb(Mn1/3Nb2/3)O3-Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 Ceramics

  • In this study, in order to develop the composition ceramics for low loss multilayer piezoelectric actuator application, $Pb(Zn_{1/2}W_{1/2})O_3-Pb(Mn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3-Pb(Zr,Ti)O_3$ (abbreviated as PZW-PMN-PZT)ceramics according to the amount of $MnO_2$ addition were fabricated using two-stage calcinations method. And also, their dielectric and piezoelectric properties were investigated. At the 0.2 wt% $MnO_2$ added PZW-PMN-PZT ceramics sintered at $930^{\circ}C$, density, electromechanical coupling factor $k_p$, dielectric constant ${\varepsilon}_r$, piezoelectric $d_{33}$ constant and mechanical quality factor $Q_m$ showed the optimum value of $7.84g/cm^3$, 0.543, 1,392, 318.7 pC/N, 1,536, respectively for low loss multilayer ceramics actuator application.

  • In this paper, in order to develop the low temperature sintering ceramics for multilayer piezoelectric transformer, $Pb[(Mn_{1/3},Nb_{2/3})_{0.07}(Zn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})_a(Zr_{0.48}Ti_{0.52})_{1-0.07-a}O_3]$ ceramics were manufactured with the variations of PZN from 2 to 14mol% and their dielectric and piezoelectric properties were investigated. Sintering temperature was varied from 910 to $1000^{\circ}C$. At 8mol% PZN substituted specimen sintered at $970^{\circ}C$, electromechanical coupling factor(kp), mechanical quality factor(Qm), dielectric constant and peizoelectric constant($d_{33}$) showed the optimal values of 0.536, 1803, 1551 and 328[pC/N), respectively, for multilayer piezoelectric transformer application.

  • Lead-free piezoelectric ceramic/epoxy composites with '0-3' connectivity were prepared by cold-pressing with a temperature controlled curing method. A ceramic powder with a composition of $(Na_{0.51}K_{0.47}Li_{0.02})(Nb_{0.8}Ta_{0.2})O_3$ was synthesized by a conventional solid state reaction route. The dielectric and piezoelectric properties of ceramic/epoxy composites were characterized as a function of the volume fraction (${\phi}$) of piezoelectric ceramics, which was varied from 70 to 95 vol%. The results indicated that the piezoelectric properties of composites were significantly affected by the volume fraction of ceramics. In terms of the piezoelectric properties, specimens showed the best performance at ${\phi}$= 85 vol%, resulting in the piezoelectric constant $d_{33}$ of 39 pC/N and the figure of merit as a piezoelectric energy harvester ($d_{33}{\cdot}g_{33}$) of 1.24 $pm^2/N$.

  • In this study, in order to develop low temperature sintering ceramics for multilayer piezoelectric actuator, $0.07Pb(Mn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3-xPb(Ni_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3-(0.93-x)Pb(Zr,Ti)O_3$ ceramics system were fabricated using $Li_2CO_3-Bi_2O_3-CuO$ sintering aids and the specimens were sintered at $930^{\circ}C$. Thereafter, their piezoelectric and dielectric characteristics were investigated according to the amount of PNN substitution. At 9 mol% PNN substitution, density, electromechanical coupling factor ($k_p$), dielectric constant, mechanical quality factor ($Q_m$) and piezoelectric constant ($d_{33}$) showed the optimum value of $7.86g/cm^3$, 0.60, 1640, 1323 and 387 pC/N, respectively. It is considered that these values are suitable for piezoelectric divece application such ad multilayer piezoelectric actuator and ultrasonic vibrator with pure Ag internal electrode.

Enhancement in Piezoelectric Properties of PZT-Based Ceramics by High Energy Ball-Milling Treatment of Solid-State Synthesized Powders

  • The effects of high energy ball-milling (HEBM) on the sintering behavior and piezoelectric properties of 0.1 wt% $Li_2CO_3$ doped 0.8Pb($Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3}$)$O_3$-0.2Pb($Zr_{0.475}Ti_{0.525}$)$O_3$ (PMN-PZT) ceramics were investigated. It was found that HEBM treatment was quite effective to reduce the average particle size down to 300 nm, leading to increased density as well as enhanced piezoelectric properties of a sintered specimen even though prolonged HEBM resulted in unwanted secondary phases that caused a degradation of piezoelectric properties. The dielectric constant ($\varepsilon_r$), piezoelectric coupling factor ($k_p$) and piezoelectric constant $d_{33}$ of 0.1 wt% $Li_2CO_3$ doped PMN-PZT ceramics prepared via HEBM for 10 h reached 2040, 0.68 and 554 pC/N, respectively.

  • In this paper, effect of MnO$_2$ addition(0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.5wt%) on the microstructure, dielectric and piezoelectric properties of [xPMW - (0.15-x) PNN] - [yPT-(0.85-y)PZ] (x=0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.05, y = 0.35, 0.40, ().425, 0.45, 0.5) were investigated. When Ti/Zr ratio was 1.0, dielectric and piezoelectric properties were highest value. With PMW 2mol%, dielectric constant, dielectric constant (d$\_$33/, d$\_$31/) and electromechanical coupling factor (kp, k$\_$31/) were highest values of 1995, 479, 186(x10$\^$-12/C/N), 0.61, 0.36, respectively. With the addition of MnO$_2$, dielectric constant, electromechanical coupling factor (kp, k$\_$31/) were decreased, but with 0.3wt% MnO$_2$, eletromechanical coupling factor was highest value of 0.63. With the addition of MnO$_2$, mechanical quality(Q$\_$m/ was increased.

  • The piezoelecric properties of $(K_{0.5}Na_{0.5})(Nb_{0.96}Sb_{0.04})O_3$+$1.2mol%K_4CuNb_8O_{23}$+$xmol%La_2O_3$ lead-free piezoelecric ceramics were investigated as a function x. These ceramics were fabricated by conventional ceramics processing. Piezoelectric constant ($d_{33}$) and piezoelectric charge coefficient ($g_{33}$) of x=0.2 mol% composition exhibited good properties of 160.3pC/N and 37.4($10^{-3}Vm/N$), respectively.

  • In this study, in order to develop the composition ceramics for low loss and low temperature sintering multilayer piezoelectric actuator, PMN-PZN-PZT ceramics were fabricated using two stage calcination method and $Li_2CO_3$, $Bi_2O_3$ and CuO as sintering aids and their piezoelectric characteristics were investigated according to the 2nd calcination and sintering temperature. At the calcination temperature of $750^{\circ}C$ and sintering temperature of $930^{\circ}C$, density, electromechanical coupling factor ($k_p$), mechanical quality factor ($Q_m$), Dielectric constant (${\varepsilon}_r$) and piezoelectric constant ($d_{33}$) of specimen showed the optimum value of $7.94g/cm^2$ 0.581, 1554, 1555 and 356pC/N, respectively for multilayer piezoelectric actuator application.

  • In this study, in order to develop low temperature sintering piezoelectric actuator, $Pb_{0.985}Bi_{0.01}(Mg_{1/2}W_{1/2})_{0.03}(Ni_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})_{0.13}(Zr_{0.50},Ti_{0.50})_{0.84}$ (PMW-PNN-PZT) ceramic systems were fabricated using $CaCO_3-Li_2CO_3$, sintering aid through a post-annealing process. The sinterability of PMW-PNN-PZT ceranics was remarkably enhanced by liquid phase sintering of $CaCO_3$ and $Li_2CO_3$. But, it was confimed form the X-ray diffraction pattern that the secondary phase along grain boundaries, deteriorated the piezoelectric properties. The secondary phase along grain boundaries was significantly removed by annealing after sintering. The 0.2wt% $Li_2CO_3$-0.25wt% $CaCO_3$-added PMW-PNN-PZT ceramics post-annealed at 900$^{\circ}C$ for 90min exhibited the excellent electromechanical coupling factor($k_p$) of 63.3% and piezoelectric constant($d_{33}$) of 452pC/N, respectively, for multilayer piezoelectricactuatorapplication.

Electric Characteristics of Disk-type Piezoelectric Transformer (디스크형 압전 변압기의 전기적 특성)

  • In this study, a step-down piezoelectric transformer was fabricated to utilize as an adapter for charging batteries of mobile electronic appliances. The ceramic part of the transformer is $Pb[(Mn_{1/3}Sb_{2/3})_{_0.05}Zr_{0.475}Ti_{0.475}]O_3$ with mechanical quality factor of 1600, electromechanical coupling coefficient $59\%$, and piezoelectric constant $d_{33}$ 1300, which can be utilized as a piezoelectric transformer. A simply fabricated disk-typed test pattern of diameter 28 mm and thickness 2 mm was used to characterize output voltage, step-down ratio as a function of electrode area with the input remained constant, and power, efficiency as a function of input voltage, and temperature-dependent electric characteristics were evaluated. The sample APT1 showed the best properties. The highest admittance, effective electromechanical coupling coefficient and an appropriate mechanical quality factor were obtained at the sample with the input/output area ratio of 1:1.5 at the common electrode, and the condition of 20 $V_{rms}$, $50\;\Omega$ made the maximum efficiency of $95\%$. The temperature was increased by 14.7'E as the input voltage was increased for $50\;V_{rms},\;50\;\Omega$.
