This study investigated that the stress reduction of single edge cracked plates with patch repairs according to different type of patching such as material, size and thickness of patch and adhesive as well as single sided or double sided patches. As a numerical tool, the p-convergent partial layerwise model has been employed. The proposed model is formulated by assuming piecewise linear variation of in-plane displacement and a constant value of out-of-plane displacements across thickness. The integrals of Legendre polynomials are chosen to define displacement fields and Gauss-Lobatto numerical integration is implemented in order to directly obtain maximum values occurred at the nodal points of each layer without other extrapolation techniques. Also, total strain energy release rate method is adopted to obtain stress intensity factors. Numerical examples are presented not only to demonstrate the stress reduction effect in terms of non-dimensional stress intensity factor and deflection with respect to different type of patch repairs, but also the accuracy of proposed model.

This paper presents the p-convergent coupling element on the basis of the ESSE(equivalent single layer shell element) and the PLLE(partial-linear layerwise element) to analyze laminated composite plates. The ESSE is formulated by the degenerated shell theory, on the other hand, the assumption of the PLLE is piecewise linear variation of the in-plane displacement and a constant value of lateral displacement across the thickness. The proposed finite element model is based on p-convergence approach. The integrals of Legendre polynomials and Gauss-Lobatto technique are chosen to interpolate displacement fields and to implement numerical quadrature, respectively. This study has been focused on the verification of p-convergent element. For this purpose, various finite element multiple models associated with the combination of ESSE and PLLE elements are tested to show numerical stability. The simple examples such as a cantilever beam subjected vertical load and a plate with tension are adopted to evaluate the performance of proposed element.

The purpose of this paper deals with direct multiple-shooting method (DMS) to resolve helicopter maneuver problems of helicopters. The maneuver problem is transformed into nonlinear problems and solved DMS technique. The DMS method is easy in handling constraints and it has large convergence radius compared to other strategies. When parameterized with piecewise constant controls, the problems become most effectively tractable because the search direction is easily estimated by solving the structured Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) system. However, generally the computation of function, gradients and Hessian matrices has considerably time-consuming for complex system such as helicopter. This study focused on the approximation of the KKT system using the matrix exponential and its integrals. The propose method is validated by solving optimal control problems for the linear system where the KKT system is exactly expressed with the matrix exponential and its integrals. The trajectory tracking problem of various maneuvers like bob up, sidestep near hovering flight speed and hurdle hop, slalom, transient turn, acceleration and deceleration are analyzed to investigate the effects of algorithmic details. The results show the matrix exponential approach to compute gradients and the Hessian matrix is most efficient among the implemented methods when combined with the mixed time integration method for the system dynamics. The analyses with the proposed method show good convergence and capability of tracking the prescribed trajectory. Therefore, it can be used to solve critical areas of helicopter flight dynamic problems.

A finer granular scalable (FGS) version of ISO/IEC MPEG-4 video streaming is investigated in this work with the prioritized stream delivery over loss-rate differentiated networks. Our proposed system is focused on the seamless integration of rate adaptation, prioritized packetization, and simplified differentiation for the MPEG-4 FGS video streaming. The proposed system consists of three key components: 1) rate adaptation with scalable source encoding, 2) content-aware prioritized packetization, and 3) loss-based differential forwarding. More specifically, a constant-quality rate adaptation is first achieved by optimally truncating the over-coded FGS stream based on the embedding rate-distortion (R-D) information (obtained from a piecewise linear R-D model). The rate-controlled video stream is then packetized and prioritized according to the loss impact of each packet. Prioritized packets are transmitted over the underlying network, where packets are subject to differentiated dropping and forwarding. By focusing on the end-to-end quality, we establish an effective working conditions for the proposed video streaming and the superior performance is verified by simulated MPEG-4 FGS video streaming.

A general formulation for shape design sensitivity analysis over three dimensional beam structure is developed based on a variational formulation of the beam in linear elasticity. Sensitivity formula is derived based on variational equations in cartesian coordinates using the material derivative concept and adjoint variable method for the displacement and Von-Mises stress functionals. Shape variation is considered for the beam shape in general 3-dimensional direction as well as for the orientation angle of the beam cross section. In the sensitivity expression, the end points evaluation at each beam segment is added to the integral formula, which are summed over the entire structure. The sensitivity formula can be evaluated with generality and ease even by employing piecewise linear design velocity field despite the bending model is fourth order differential equation. For the numerical implementation, commercial software ANSYS is used as analysis tool for the primal and adjoint analysis. Once the design variable set is defined using ANSYS language, shape and orientation variation vector at each node is generated by making finite difference to the shape with respect to each design parameter, and is used for the computation of sensitivity formula. Several numerical examples are taken to show the advantage of the method, in which the accuracy of the sensitivity is evaluated. The results are found excellent even by employing a simple linear function for the design velocity evaluation. Shape optimization is carried out for the geometric design of an archgrid and tilted bridge, which is to minimize maximum stress over the structure while maintaining constant weight. In conclusion, the proposed formulation is a useful and easy tool in finding optimum shape in a variety of the spatial frame structures.
In this paper, we propose a post-selection inference procedure for the fused lasso signal approximator (FLSA). The FLSA finds underlying sparse piecewise constant mean structure by applying total variation (TV) semi-norm as a penalty term. However, it is widely known that this convex relaxation can cause asymptotic inconsistency in change points detection. As a result, there can remain false change points even though we try to find the best subset of change points via a tuning procedure. To remove these false change points, we propose a post-selection inference for the FLSA. The proposed procedure applies a permutation test based on CUSUM statistic. Our post-selection inference procedure is an extension of the permutation test of Antoch and Hušková (2001) which deals with single change point problems, to multiple change points detection problems in combination with the FLSA. Numerical study results show that the proposed procedure is better than naïve z-tests and tests based on the limiting distribution of CUSUM statistics.
Object tracking is a field of signal processing that sequentially tracks the location of an object based on the previous-time location estimations and the present-time observation data. In this paper, we propose an adaptive scaling neural network that can track and adjust the scale of the input data with three recursive neural network (RNN) submodules. To evaluate object tracking performance, we compare the proposed system with the Kalman filter and the maximum likelihood object tracking scheme under an one-dimensional object movement model in which the object moves with piecewise constant acceleration. We show that the proposed scheme is generally better, in terms of root mean square error (RMSE) performance, than maximum likelihood scheme and Kalman filter and that the performance gaps grow with increased observation noise.
The present research investigates the combination resonance behaviors of porous FG shallow shells reinforced with oblique stiffeners and subjected to a two-term excitation. The oblique stiffeners considered in this research reinforce the shell internally and externally. To model the stiffeners, Lekhnitskii's smeared stiffeners technique is utilized. According to the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) and stress functions, a nonlinear model of the oblique stiffened shallow shell is established. With regard to the FSDT and von-Kármán nonlinear geometric assumptions, the stress-strain relationships for the present shell system are developed. Also, in order to discretize the nonlinear governing equations, the Galerkin method is implemented. To obtain the required relations for investigating the combination resonance theoretically, the method of multiple scales is applied. For verifying the results of the present research, generated results are compared with previous research. Additionally, a comparison with the P-T method is conducted to increase the validity of the generated results, as this method has illustrated advantages over other numerical methods in terms of accuracy and reliability. In this method, the piecewise constant argument is used jointly with the Taylor series expansion, which is why it is named the P-T method. The effects of stiffeners with different angles, and the effects of material parameters on the combination resonance behaviors of the present system are addressed. With the findings of this research, researchers and engineers in this field may use them as benchmarks for their design and research of porous FG shallow shells.
Traffic volumes are fundamental data widely used in various traffic analysis, such as origin-and-destination establishment, total traveled kilometer distance calculation, congestion evaluation, and so on. The low number of links collecting the traffic-volume data in a large urban highway network has weakened the quality of the analyses in practice. This study proposes a method to estimate the traffic volume data on a highway link where no collection device is available by introducing a spatial statistic technique with (1) the traffic-volume data from TOPIS, and National Transport Information Center in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and (2) the navigation data from private navigation. Two different component models were prepared for the interrupted and the uninterrupted flows respectively, due to their different traffic-flow characteristics: the piecewise constant function and the regression kriging. The comparison of the traffic volumes estimated by the proposed method against the ones counted in the field showed that the level of error includes 6.26% in MAPE and 5,410 in RMSE, and thus the prediction error is 20.3% in MAPE.
