Development of a Concentration Measurement System for Pickling Line Control (산세라인 자동화를 위한 농도 측정 시스템 개발)

  • This paper proposes the development of a new method for online analysis which measured acid concentration in a pickling line. Pickling is the most important step to remove surface scale layers and is strongly depending on the exactly controlled pickling liquor composition. Today, there is no feasible system available for the online control of pickling lines. Within this paper, new methods for online analysis of pickling liquors have been tested and implemented into an overall pickling process control tool. This method measured simultaneously the hydrochloric acid and iron ion concentration in a solution of hydrochloric acid by measuring the ultrasonic speed, the solution temperature, and the electrical conductivity. Experimental results showed excellent precision and the measurement error was ${\pm}2g/l$ compared with the neutralization titration measurement.

A Study on Coating Adhesion of Hot Rolled Galvanized Iron Manufactured without pickling process (산세생략형 열연 용융아연도금강판의 특성)

  • Coating adherance behavior of low carbon steels, produced by POSCO, Korea, was studied in order to study the characteristics of hot rolled galvanized iron(HGI) manufactured without pickling line and the development of its process. Galvanizing experiments were carried out in zinc pot with 0.2wt% Al after hot rolled plates with scale were reduced at $550~750^{\circ}C$ in 10~30% hydrogen gas atmosphere during 60~400seconds. The reduced plates and coated products were examined by SST, XRD, SEM and EPMA on their surfaces and cross sections. Coating layer of HGI manufactured with pickling line was composed of retained scale, Fe-Zn-Al compound, Fe-Zn compound ($\delta_1\;and\;\zeta$ Phase) and pure zinc. It was superior to HGI in coating adhesion. It seems to be due to forming of Fe-Zn-Al compound in interface of matrix and retained porous scale.

  • In order to apply for pickling line in cold rolling process, a high power magnetostrictive ultrasonic transducer was developed. The transducer is expected to overcome the shortcomings of conventional high power ultrasonic transducers. The transducer consists of Fe-Co-V alloy sheets for the magnetostrictive material, an ultrasonic horn made of Hastelloy to withstand acid solution, and electric driving circuit. In the development, the transducer was designed with the theoretical and numerical methods such as finite element method, and was characterized with experimental water tanks.   • No. 1 PL(Pickling Line) and No. 1 TCM(Tandem Cold Rolling Mill) at Pohang works started up in 1977 and have been operating successfully keeping high productivity for productivity thin gauge sheat such as BP, CR and silicon steel. On the other hand, customer's requirements of quality level are rasing higher continuously, so that Pohang works has combined and revamped No. 1 PL and No. 1 TCM in order to improve labor productivity, thickness accuracy and shape control capability, and so on in the period of 1977∼1999. This paper introduce the applied facilities, technologies and recent operations after revamping.

  • Recently, the customer's demands for automotive steel sheet have been diversified and sterned more. Therefore, as the tendency of auto industry light-weight, one among these requirements is the trend for high strength together with the thinness of automotive steel sheet. Because Mn added essentially in producing high strength steel sheet is bonded strongly with oxygen, the Fine oxidation layer was created at the welding face after the flash butt welding operated in entry section of pickling line. Thereby it was caused the crack or breakage of welding part in process of cold rolling. At this research, in order to protect the contact Mn with oxygen in atomosphere it was considered to fire oxygen with LNG and the related researches have been gone forward with the find out concrete and to apply them to operation.

  • A new additive for semi-brightness finish in nickel electroplating, having a quarternary ammonium salt structure, has been developed in this study. The effectiveness of the new additive was tested in laboratory-scale eletroplating tests as well as in a full-scale factory plating line. An examination of the plated surface showed that the new additive is as good as the one produced by the most commonly used additive in the nickel plating industry. The plated surface was examined by SEM, EPMA, and Reflectance Spectroscopy, and was found to be compatible to the one obtained with commercial additives. The new additive has a shelf life comparable with those of other commercially available additives. The additive developed in this study has an excellent potential to be used commercially.

  • 무전해 니켈도금은 전기 공급 없이 환원재의 화학반응에 의해 도금이 진행되며, 복잡한 형상의 제품에도 균일한 도금 층을 형성시킬 수 있어 널리 적용되는 기술이다. 특히, 전기 니켈도금 층에 비해 무전해 니켈도금 층의 내식성과 내마모성이 우수하여 산업현장에서 가장 많이 사용되고 있다. 그러나 해양환경에서 빠른 유속 변화에 의해 발생되는 캐비테이션-침식 방지를 위한 무전해 니켈도금의 적용은 전무한 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 회주철의 캐비테이션-침식 방지를 위해 최적의 무전해 니켈도금 조건을 규명하고, 그 캐비테이션 저항성을 평가하고자 하였다. 무전해 니켈코팅을 위한 모재는 gray cast iron (FC250)을 $19.5mm{\times}19.5mm{\times}5mm$의 크기로 제작하였다. 회주철의 인장강도는 $330N/mm^2$이며, 그 성분 조성(wt.%)은 3.23 C, 1.64 Si, 0.84 Mn, 0.016 P, 0.013 S 그리고 나머지는 Fe이다. 시험편은 SiC 페이퍼 grit #1200까지 연마하였으며, 시험편의 표면 거칠기(centre line average, Ra)는 $1.6-2.1{\mu}m$ 범위 내로 제작하였다. 연마된 시험편은 증류수(distilled water) 세척 후 hot air로 건조하였다. 무전해 도금 전 시험편은 탈지를 위해 아세톤 용액(room temperature, RT)에서 3분간 초음파 세척하고, $90^{\circ}C$의 알카리 수용액으로 5분간 세척하였다. 그리고 표면활성화를 위한 산세척(acid pickling)은 5% sulfuric acid 용액에서 30초 동안 실시하였다. 무전해 Ni-P(electroless nickel, EN) 도금 전과 모든 과정마다 증류수로 시험편을 철저하게 세척하였다. EN 도금을 위한 도금욕(the bath)은 기존 문헌 연구를 통해 조성성분, 도금조건 및 변수들(the parameters)의 적절한 범위를 결정하였다. 도금조로 500mL 비커를 사용하였으며, 모든 시험편은 2시간 동안 EN deposition을 실시하였다. 캐비테이션 실험 결과 EN 도금의 표면경도가 증가함에 따라 캐비테이션 저항성도 현저하게 향상되었다.

A Study on the Heat Treatment Technology for Reduction of Oxidation Scales (산화피막 저감을 위한 열처리 기술에 관한 연구)

  • Most of flame furnace with uncontrolled atmosphere forms oxidation scales in the surface during heat treatment. In this case, shot blasting and pickling are commonly used for reduction of oxidation scales. These processes have many disadvantages, such as long process time, high operating cost and environmental problems due to polishing dust, etc. Hence, this study aimed to develop the advanced heat treating equipment which could make a controlled atmosphere using a heatresisting structure into the flame furnace. The analysis result with SEM, EPMA, and EDX revealed that the amount of scales formed is much less than that with the conventional flame furnace. A brightness of the sample treated with the advanced process is similar compared to the treatment with vacuum furnace. In the present work, it was recommended that the inside structure of the furnace and gas line system could made up of SBB410 and STS310, respectively. The operating cost with the advanced heat treatment system could be reduced annually by forty million won. As a result of this study, it may be possible to reduce the oxidation scales. The fundamental information obtained in this study will be useful not only for improving the heat treatment process(reduction of shot blast and cleaning process), but for promoting the manufacture of bright products.
