  • In this study, the correlation between recycled plastic pellets and the antioxidant efficacy of the extract of Mucuna pruriens (M. pruriens) was verified. After immersing recycled plastic pellets in M. pruriens extracts, they were stored for 30 days under various temperature conditions, and then analyzed for DPPH radical and ABTS+ radical erasing ability, SOD-like activity, total phenol and flavonoid content. Compared to the existing efficacy, DPPH radical elimination showed less than 30% activity change in ECOTRIA and PCR-PP pellets, and the largest decrease in activity of 46.06% was confirmed in Grico pellets. As a result of measuring ABTS+ radical erasure ability, less than 5% of efficacy change was confirmed in all pellets. As a result of measuring SOD-like activity, all showed a decrease in activity of more than 30%, and as a result of measuring the total phenol and flavonoid content, all pellets showed a tendency to decrease compared to the existing content. Through this results, it was confirmed that the physiological activity of M. pruriens extract decreased and changed by recycled plastic pellets, and based on the results of this study, recycled plastic pellets are believed to affect the existing efficacy and activity stability of M. pruriens extract.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the efficacy of antifungal and antibacterial activity of Veratri Herba, which was used as insecticide in the clinical part of oriental dermatology for a long time. Sample herb was selected with Veratrum maackii in the middle of 5 veratrum species. The experimental results of this herb were as follows. Crude extract showed various relative inhibitory rates from 68.9% to 95.6% in 2mg/disc against Fusarium oxysporum, Botrytis cineria, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Escherichiae coli, and Bacillus subtilis on the basis of inhibitory range against B. cineria, and the inhibitory effect was decreased depending on density. In the extract of various organic solvent, chloroform and ethyl acetate fraction show the various size of dear zone against all microbes. And in the subfraction assay from ethyl acetate fraction, crude alkaloids show the antibacterial and antifungal effect significantly.

  • Phototherapy have perpetual history, we can see an instance of it in Yellow Emperor's Conon of Medicine(黃帝內經) and Laser therapy is a field of Phototherapy being used frequently in the latest time. We treated patients with telangiectasia by laser therapy and experimented it's efficacy and studied the means of clinical application in Korean medicine. We report the capabilities of application of laser therapy, based on Korean medical theories by using resemblance between laser therapy with kyung-rak(經絡) control technique in the line that connects with the past.

  • The main objective of this study was to provide anesthetic criteria of clove oil for an effective manipulation and transportation of red spotted grouper, Epinephelus akaara. When anesthesia temperature (20, 24, and $28^{\circ}C$) and concentration of clove oil (25, 50, and 75 ppm) were increased, the anesthesia and recovery time decreased and tended to be similar to each other between juvenile and adult. Also, as the temperature and concentration increased, the ratio of exposure time and recovery time between juvenile and adult were decreased. When plasma cortisol concentrations were compared for 48 h after anesthesia with 50 ppm of clove oil, both the juvenile and adult fish grew up to 12 h; however, thereafter decreased and there was no significant difference from control at 48 h.

  • Heart rate variability (HRV) in electrocardiogram (ECG) is an important index for understanding the health status of heart and the autonomic nervous system. Most HRV analysis approaches are based on the proper heart rate (HR) data. Estimation of heart rate is thus a key process in the HRV study. In this paper, we report an innovative method to estimate the heart rate. This method is mainly based on the concept of periodicity transform (PT) and instantaneous period (IP) estimate. The method presented is accordingly called the "PT-IP method." It does not require ECG R-wave detection and thus possesses robust noise-immune capability. While the noise contamination, ECG time-varying morphology, and subjects' physiological variations make the R-wave detection a difficult task, this method can help us effectively estimate HR for medical research and clinical diagnosis. The results of estimating HR from empirical ECG data verify the efficacy and reliability of the proposed method.

  • At central synapses, activity-dependent synaptic plasticity has a crucial role in information processing, storage, learning, and memory under both physiological and pathological conditions. One widely accepted model of learning mechanism and information processing in the brain is Hebbian Plasticity: long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD). LTP and LTD are respectively activity-dependent enhancement and reduction in the efficacy of the synapses, which are rapid and synapse-specific processes. A number of recent studies have a strong focal point on the critical importance of another distinct form of synaptic plasticity, non-Hebbian plasticity. Non-Hebbian plasticity dynamically adjusts synaptic strength to maintain stability. This process may be very slow and occur cell-widely. By putting them all together, this mini review defines an important conceptual difference between Hebbian and non-Hebbian plasticity.

  • In this paper, we describe a millimeter-wave radiation system developed for stimulating acupuncture points, and an analyzing system developed for monitoring the change of physiological signals after the stimulation such as ECG, skin temperature, skin potential and skin resistance. The systems are to be used to investigate the treatment efficacy and biological effects of the millimeter-wave, and eventually, can be used to study the acupuncture meridian system theory in the traditional Korean medicine.

  • This study was designed to investigate the hyperlipidemia-healing effect of aqueous extract from Mahwangimun-tang(麻黃二門湯) and it was performed on the hyperlipidemia of rats induced by high cholesterol diet and Triton WR-1339. We prepared two types of hyperlipidemia model in rats induced by high cholesterol diet and Triton WR-1339. The amount of total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL -cholesterol, triglyceride, phospholipid, free fatty acid, the activity of superoxide dismutase and glutathione were measured. The aqueous extract from Mahwangimun-tang showed significant decreasing effects on total cholesterol, LDL- cholesterol, triglyceride in the both model. And it showed significant increasing effects on HDL-cholesterol, the activity of SOD in both model. These results suggest that aqueous extract from Mahwangimun-tang has healing efficacy on hyperlipidemia induced by high cholesterol diet and Triton WR-1339.

  • Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-VEGF receptor (VEGFR) system has been shown to play central roles not only in physiological angiogenesis, but also in pathological angiogenesis in diseases such as cancer. Based on these findings, a variety of anti-angiogenic drugs, including anti-VEGF antibodies and VEGFR/multi-receptor kinase inhibitors have been developed and approved for the clinical use. While the clinical efficacy of these drugs has been clearly demonstrated in cancer patients, they have not been shown to be effective in curing cancer, suggesting that further improvement in their design is necessary. Abnormal expression of an endogenous VEGF-inhibitor sFlt-1 has been shown to be involved in a variety of diseases, such as preeclampsia and aged macular degeneration. In addition, various factors modulating angiogenic processes have been recently isolated. Given this complexity then, extensive studies on the interrelationship between VEGF signals and other angiogenesis-regulatory systems will be important for developing future strategies to suppress diseases with an angiogenic component.
