Opportunities and Challenges Perceived by Teachers from Physical Computing Education (피지컬 컴퓨팅 교육을 통해 교사가 지각한 기회 및 도전요소)

  • Physical computing is utilizing principles of computing in the process of expressing one's ideas creatively and implementing them into tangible objects by combining hardware and software. Recent deployment of open source hardware and 3D printers increased the accessibility of physical computing. However, incorporating these into educational practices requires teachers' interest and competencies. This study aims to share the perceived opportunities of developing physical computing based lessons and challenges from teachers' experiences while primary teachers participated in learning fundamentals of physical computing and developing lessons. The findings of this study provide implications to the teachers who are interested in adopting physical computing into classes and in designing teacher training programs.

A Case Study on Block Coding and Physical Computing Education for University of Education Students (교육대학생을 대상으로 한 블록 코딩 및 피지컬 컴퓨팅 교육 사례)

  • This study is an example of the education of block coding and physical computing teaching tool for preservice teachers at the college of education. The students were familiar with coding and improved their coding skills in solving various problems through 'Entry' that support block coding. In addition, the students configured the computing system with various input / output devices of the physical computing teaching tool and controlled things through programming and produced the educational portfolio to experience the whole process of problem analysis, design, implementation, and testing in coding. We applied Flow based coding and Pair programming as the teaching methods, and the results of the survey to measure the effectiveness of the study show that students have a good understanding of the entry and physical computing teaching tool and using the combination of the entry and physical computing teaching tool were more effective in learning than the Entry-only coding. In addition, it was confirmed that the effect of Pair programming applied in the physical computing teaching tool.

The Effect of Physical Computing Programming Education Integrating Artificial Intelligence on Computational Thinking Ability of Elementary School Students

  • In the era of the information revolution, the need for artificial intelligence convergence education is emerging in the trend of global change. Therefore, in this paper, a physical computing programming education method that combines artificial intelligence was developed and applied. The control group was provided with physical computing programming education that did not converge with artificial intelligence, and the experimental group developed and applied a physical computing programming education method that fused artificial intelligence to analyze the impact on elementary school students' computing thinking ability. As a result, it was confirmed that physical computing programming education fused with artificial intelligence had a more positive effect on enhancing elementary school students' computational thinking skills compared to physical computing programming education without artificial intelligence.

  • This research will apply the environmental characteristics of physical computing to game development, which has the concept of giving substantial materiality to digital media that do not exist in reality. The processing process of physical computing is digital input and digital output, and analog input and analog output, which mainly uses Malik controllers. Therefore, we select development elements by analyzing research cases in the field of digital art and information education where physical computing is studied a lot, and by analyzing games that borrowed some physical computing elements. The derived elements are verified by the Delphi's research methodology through agreement with experts. 12 elements are selected in this study, and the importance is shown in order of the physical properties in the virtual world, the suitability of the implementation technology, and the conformity between real and virtual players.

  • This purpose of this study is to develop and apply the physical computing lessons based on the software guidelines from the Ministry of Education (2015). In this study, I research how computational thinking occurs in class by applying the physical computing lessons to elementary students based on computational practices. The physical computing lessons and analytic methods for computational thinking in this study can be used as a sample and case-study to develop the lessons in the educational field.

  • This study attempted to develop and apply a physical computing SW education program applying design thinking. The produced SW education program was applied to 22 students in the 5th and 6th grades of J and B elementary schools located in Jeju-si. Computational thinking ability and creativity pre-test was conducted, and Physical computing software training applied design thinking was conducted over a total of 5 sessions for 20 hours, followed by a post-test on creativity and computational thinking ability. As a result of the verification, it was found that physical computing SW education program applying design thinking was effective in improving the creativity and computing thinking ability of elementary school students.

  • With the vision of Internet of Things (IoT), physical world itself is becoming a connected information system on the Internet and cyber world is computing as a physical act to sense and respond to real-world events collaboratively. The systems that tightly interlink the cyber and physical worlds are often referred to as Smart Systems or Cyber-Physical Systems. Smart IoT Clouds aim to provide a cyber-physical infrastructure for utility (pay-as-you-go) computing to easily and rapidly build, modify and provision auto-scale smart systems that continuously monitor and collect data about real-world events and automatically control their environment. Developing specifications for service interoperability is critical to enable to achieve this vision. In this paper, we bring an issue to extend Open Cloud Computing Interface for uniform, interoperable interfaces for Smart IoT Cloud Services to access services and build a smart system through orchestrating the cloud services.

Model-based Autonomic Computing Framework for Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS를 위한 모델 기반 자율 컴퓨팅 프레임워크)

  • In this paper, we present the model-based autonomic computing framework for a cyber-physical system which provides a self-management and a self-adaptation characteristics. A development process using this framework consists of two phases: a design phase in which a developer models faults, normal status constrains, and goals of the CPS, and an operational phase in which an autonomic computing engine operates monitor-analysis-plan-execute(MAPE) cycle for managed resources of the CPS. We design a hierachical architecture for autonomic computing engines and adopt the Model Reference Adaptive Control(MRAC) as a basic feedback loop model to separate goals and resource management. According to the GroundVehicle example, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the framework.

Development and Application of Teaching-learning Strategies PBL based Physical Computing Programming using Reflective Journal and Feedback (성찰저널과 피드백을 적용한 PBL 기반의 피지컬 컴퓨팅 프로그래밍 교수·학습 전략 개발 및 적용)

  • This study we developed teaching and learning strategy applying PBL based physical computing programming using reflection journal and feedback, and verified its effectiveness. For the analysis, the survey with 18 sections study contents was performed for 6 weeks by dividing 91 students in 5th grade of elementary school into experimental group and control group respectively. As a result, this study proved that the students who made the structured reflections journals and receiving the feedback at the same time showed the improvement in logical thinking ability in the physical computing based programming learning situation with PBL applied. Based on the results of this study, the sophisticated teaching and learning strategy that can enhance the programming learning effect based on physical computing was developed and its applicability was proved.

A Meta-Synthesis of Research about Physical Computing Education in Korean Elementary and Secondary Schools (초·중등학교 피지컬 컴퓨팅 교육 연구의 메타 종합 분석)

  • A physical computing education is helpful for enhancing learners' computational thinking, creativity, and collaborative problem solving ability and so on. Recently, it is being actively promoted according to the software education policy and the 2015 revised national curriculum in Korea. This study describes a meta-synthesis of research on physical learning education that investigates the extent to which there is evidence of benefits and challenges for physical computing education. 37 articles were identified, and 20 articles met the inclusion criteria. The synthesis resulted in the list of purposes, teaching and learning methods, and physical computing tools, and benefits of physical computing education.
