A model was developed to predict the effects of rising air temperature on net photosynthetic rate of Quercus mongolica stands at Mt. Paekcheok-san, Kangwon-do in South Korea. The PFD (Photon flux density) and air temperature were determined from weather data from the research site and the Daegwallyeong meteorological station and gas exchange or release responses of each tree component were measured. Using these data, we simulated the effects of increases in mean annual air temperatures above current conditions on annual $CO_2$ budget of Q. mongolica stands. If mean annual air temperature is increased by 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 or $3.0^{\circ}C$, annual net photosynthetic rate will be increased by 8.8, 12.8, 14.5, 12.6, 9.2 and 1.0 ton $CO_2\;ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$ respectively. Simulations indicate that changes in air temperature will have a major impact on gas exchange and release in Q. mongolica stands, resulting in a net increase in the rate of carbon fixation by standing crops.

This study determined the characteristics of LED illumination and photosynthetically active radiation flux density (PPFD) for LED lighting design in an indoor plant factory. This was done based on the light wavelength and PPFD intensity required for plant growth. It has been found that the wavelength and intensity are decreased according to the measuring distance, and green light has an important role in illumination characteristics, while blue light has an important role in the PPFD characteristics. Considering only the photosynthetic properties of plants, the effective order of photosynthesis was blue>red>white>green. When the measurement distance was 30 [cm], it was found that reduction levels of 60 [cm], 90 [cm], and 120 [cm] decreased to about 36 [%], 18 [%], and 10 [%], respectively. As a result of the characteristics of mixed light (red:blue=2:1, 3:1, 4:1) and the measurement distance, when the measured value at 30 [cm] is 100%, the measured value at 120 [cm] is 10-11 [%]. From the obtained results, an optimal structure was proposed for maximizing the light efficiency of an indoor greenhouse for future research.
Prunus mume is a culturally significant fruit tree in East Asia that is widely used in traditional foods and medicines. The present study investigated the effects of sunlight exposure and leaf position on the photosynthetic efficiency of P. mume using SPAD values. The study was conducted at Cheongju National University of Education, Korea, under contrasting conditions between sunny (Site A) and shaded (Site B) areas on P. mume trees. Over three days, under varied weather, photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) and SPAD measurements were collected using a SPAD-502 plus chlorophyll meter and a smartphone PPFD meter application. The SPAD values of the 60 leaves were measured in triplicate for each tree. The results indicated that trees in sunny locations consistently exhibited higher SPAD values than those in shaded areas, implying greater photosynthetic efficiency. Moreover, leaves positioned higher in the canopy showed increased photosynthetic efficiency under different light conditions, underscoring the significance of leaf placement and light environment in photosynthetic optimization. Despite the daily sunlight variability, these factors maintained a consistent influence on SPAD values. This study concludes that optimal leaf positioning, influenced by direct sunlight exposure, significantly enhances photosynthetic efficiency in P. mume. These findings highlight the potential of integrating smart farming techniques, especially open-field smart farming technology, to improve photosynthesis and, consequently, crop yield and efficiency. The findings also highlight the need for further exploration of environmental factors affecting photosynthesis for agricultural advancement.
The dynamic model was developed to simulate the photosynthetic rate of Phragmites communis stands in coastal ecosystem. The model was composed of the compartments of both climatic and biological variables. The former were photosynthetic photon flux density(PPFD), daily maximum- and minimum-temperature. The latter were combinations of the specific physiological responses of plant organs with the biomass of each organs. The PPFD and air temperature were calculated and using those values, gas exchange rate of each plant organ was calculated at every hour. The carbon budget was constructed using the modelled predictions. Analysis of annual productivity and fluxes showed that yearly gross population productivity, yearly population respiration and yearly net population productivity were 33.4, 21.3 and 12.1 $CO_2ton{\cdot}ha^{-2}{\cdot}yr^{-1}$, respectively. The final result was tested over two stands, produced promising predictions with regards to the levels of production attained. The model can be used to determine production potential under given climatic conditions and could even be applied to plant canopies with analogous biological characteristics.

This study was carried out to investigate the effects of light intensities on the growth and net photosynthesis of Piper kauzura under different shading levels : 0%, 50%, 70% and 90% of sunlight. Mortality rate was lowest under a 70% shading level but 0% and 90% shading levels were about 46% and 53% each respectively. Plant height was shorter and leaf size was smaller and yellowish under a 0% shading level but increased when light intensity was decreased. However, under a 90% shading level, growth of Piper kauzura was inferior to other treatments. Top fresh weight was about 11.24g under a 50% shading level and about two times higher than that observed in about 6.6g under a 90% shading level. Root fresh weight was about 7.7g under a 0% shading level and was about two times higher than that showed in about 3.84g and 3.64g under 90% and 70% respectively. Total chlorophyll content and chlorophyll a/b rate were increased when light intensity was decreased. Net Photosynthesis achieved the highest under a 70% shading level and maximum photosynthetic photon flux density was 150 molㆍm/sup -2/ㆍs/sup -1/. Therefore, growth of Piper kauzura was good under 50∼70% shading, Meaning that it is an indoor plant that could be highly utilized.

This study was carried out to analyze the light and thermal environment in model greenhouse using infrared absorption film as shading screen and to compare with the case of no shading and using general shading screen such as aluminum foil-backed film, black polyethylene film and thermal blanket. PPFD(photosynthetic photon flux density) of inside the model greenhouse under infrared absorption film was increased by 22% than under general shading screen on the average. And temperature of inside air under infrared absorption film was 2$^{\circ}C$ lower than under general shading screen on the average. So, it is expected that infrared absorption film is useful as shading screen.

Rotational smart lighting control system provides artificial light to plants on planting board by rotational lighting system. As the lighting system of existing plant factory has high cost problem due to the installation for many lighting equipments, the lighting system was developed to rotate less number of lighting equipments to reduce cost. In this paper, the illuminance, luminous flux and photosynthetic photon flux density(PPFD) that plants need to grow were calculated. And the light intensity at each measured location considering the rotational speed of blade were analyzed by the simulation and the experiment.

This study was conducted to analyze the seedling quality of korean melon and the growth after transplanting of korean melon nursed under the LED sources. LED sources were RB7 (Red:Blue=14:2), RB3 (Red:Blue=12:4) and Blue(B=16). Photosynthetic photon flux density(PPFD) was 50, 100 and $200{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$. The lighting treatment was started after graft-taken and was applied for 20 days at 4 hours(05:30 and 07:30, 17:30 and 19:30) per day. Plant height and stem diameter of scion were longer and thicker under a high ratio of blue light condition. Dry matter ratio and compactness were highest in RB3 compared to the other LED sources treatments. $CO_2$ exchange rate increased $5.44{\mu}molCO_2{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ under RB7 $200{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ and dropped to negative values under control. PPFD $200{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ of RB3 resulted in the longest plant height by 132.3cm and flowering ratio also was the highest by 75%.

Agastache rugosa, is a perennial medicinal plant commonly used in Chinese herbalism, and may have anti-atherogenic and antibacterial properties. Here in this study, we investigated the growth and variations in antioxidant contents of A. rugosa in response to nutrient solution and photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) with artificial lighting for a hydroponics culture. Fluorescent light at 150, and $200{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ PPFD with a 16/8 (light/dark) photoperiod, combined with four different nutrient solutions [developed by Horticulture experiment station in Japan (HES), University of Seoul (UOS), Europe vegetable research center (EVR), Otsuka-house 1A (OTS)], were used in a hydroponics culture system for 6 weeks. The shoot and root dry weights of A. rugosa grown with the OTS were significantly higher than those of other nutrient solutions. The amount of tilianin was the highest grown with the OTS, followed by EVR, HES, and UOS. Total acacetin content was the highest in A. rugosa grown under EVR which was statistically similar with OTS. The A. rugosa grown under $200{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ PPFD produced higher fresh weight and both acacetin and tilianin contents than that grown under $150{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ PPFD. The present results suggested that OTS along with $200{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ PPFD could be an optimum growing condition for better growth and higher accumulation of tilianin and acacetin contents in A. rugosa with hydroponic culture systems in a plant factory.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of optimized environment conditions with growth stage in photoautotrophic micropropagation on the growth of potato (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Dejima) plantlets and energy efficiency. Optimum environment conditions at each stage were decided in our previous study. For the evaluation of optimized environment control, potato plantlets were cultured under four different conditions: photoautotrophic optimum conditions of photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) and $CO_2$ levels with growth stage (POG), photoautotrophic constant condition with average PPFD and $CO_2$ levels (PCA), photoauototrophic constant condition with maximum PPFD and $CO_2$ levels (PCM), and photomixotrophic conventional condition with 3% sucrose (PMC) as control. As a result, environment control with growth stage (POG) significantly promoted all the growth characteristics such as the number of nodes and unfolded leaves, shoot height, shoot diameter, and fresh and dry weights of potato grown in vitro. In addition, based on dry weight consumed electricity and $CO_2$ were the lowest in POG suggesting the highest energy efficiency among the treatments. After transferring potato plantlets to greenhouse, the plantlets under POG showed vigorous growth, which was pretty similar with those under PMC. The accumulations of dry matter in POG were 4.7 times in vitro and 3.8 times in greenhouse as much as those in the conventional control (PCM). Thus, we concluded that in vitro environment control with growth stage induced vigorous growth of potato plantlets both in vitro and in greenhouse with less energy consumption.
