  • Comparison of three converter topologies for single phase switched reluctance motor is proposed in this paper. Due to the limitation of do-link voltage, conventional asymmetric converter is difficult to build up enough phase current in the high speed operation. In order to solve this problem, boost converter is used to improve the performance. Two active boost converters are reviewed: one is series-connected type, another is parallel-connected. Otherwise, a novel active boost converter is proposed. The comparison of these converters is based on the voltage raring of capacitor, stability and converter topology. Because the converter selection depends on the motor design, the single phase 6/6 SRM is considered in this paper. Some simulations results are executed. And the results verified the analysis in this paper.

  • In this paper, we compared the performances of the Right Handed Transmission Line (RHTL) and the Left Handed Transmission Line (LHTL) phase shifters as a frequency translator. Unlike other phase shifters, both phase shifters show a $0^{\circ}-360^{\circ}$ phase variation for a broadband frequency and compact in size which are ideal to use as a frequency translator. For the performance comparison, we fabricated both a RHTL and a LHTL phase shifter to cover 1.5 GHz - 2.4 GHz range with the whole $360^{\circ}$ phase variation. For the frequency range, a LHTL based frequency translator showed a much better performance whose Spurious Free Dynamic Range (SFDR) is 4dB - 17dB higher than the RHTL based frequency translator when the sawtooth modulation freqncy is 11 kHz. This is due to the linear phase-voltage variation of LHTL phase shifter. Furthermore, the LHTL phase shifter shows a less insertion loss and a insertion loss variation than the RHTL phase shifter. Overall, the LHTL based frequency translator outperformed RHTL based freqency translator.

  • In this paper, a phase comparison direction finding method of circular array composed of 8 antennas considering polarization characteristics is analyzed. A broadband cavity-backed patch antenna operating in 6 ~ 12 GHz is used, and the antennas are arranged in radial direction to receive various polarization signals. For the phase comparison, widely spaced elements are used to obtain precise DOA(Direction of Arrival), and narrowly spaced elements are used to resolve ambiguity. Two dimensional direction finding is performed for ±20° in both azimuth and elevation, and the DOA error is less than 0.5° and 1.6° near the boresight and the ±15° region, respectively.

  • In this paper, we introduce an adaptive phase-comparison monopulse technique for angle estimation of two targets in the same antenna beam. The proposed method determines a more suitable technique(between conventional phase comparison monopulse technique and Zheng's method) based on interference between two targets in Fourier domain. Consequently, regardless of the interference, angles of each individual target can be accurately estimated by means of the proposed method. In simulations, we assumed that two point targets with same velocity are located in the same antenna beam, and the accuracy improvement of the proposed method is verified by using several simulations.

  • The frequency and phase angle of utility voltage represent very important information fur applications such as AC/DC converters and Uninterruptible Power Supplies(UPS). In a three-phase system, the utility voltage information can be easily obtained by using a utility voltage vector. However, in the case of a single-phase system. the utility voltage information is much harder to obtain. This paper presents a comparative study of single-phase PLL algorithms using virtual 2-phase strategy. Simulation and experimental results, including operation of the PLL structures introduced in reference papers, are presented to allow a performance comparison of the PLL algorithms.

  • Through Montecarlo simulation, this study compares how accurately the existing three phase deviation models estimate the time-varying variance of a planar oscillator perturbed by Gaussian noises. The comparison reveals that Kaertner model estimates the time-varying variance with about 1000 times higher accuracy than ISF or PP model exhibits. Additionally, it finds that the estimation accuracy of PP model is somewhat higher than that of ISF model.

  • We investigate the comparison of fault current characteristics between the separates three-phase flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) and integrated three-phase flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL). The single-phase flux-lock type SFCL consists of two coils. The primary coil is wound in parallel to the secondary coil on an iron core and superconducting elements are connected to secondary coil in series. Superconducting elements are used by the YBCO coated conductor. The separated three-phase flux-lock type SFCL consists of single-phase flux-phase type SFCL in each phase. But the integrated three-phase flux-lock type SFCL consists of three-phase flux-reactors wound on an iron core. Flux-reactor consists of the same turn's ratio between coil 1 and coil 2 for each single phase. To compare the current limiting characteristics of the separated three-phase flux-lock type SFCL and integrated three-phase flux-lock type SFCL, the short circuit experiments are carried out fault condition such as the single line-to-ground fault. The experimental result shows that fault current limiting characteristic of the separated three-phase flux-lock type SFCL was better than integrated three-phase flux-lock type SFCL. And the integrated three-phase flux-lock type SFCL has an effect on sound phase.

  • In this paper, we perform a direct comparison study of real experimental data for domain rearrangement and the Cahn-Hilliard (CH) equation on the dynamics of morphological evolution. To validate a mathematical model for physical phenomena, we take initial conditions from experimental images by using an image segmentation technique. The image segmentation algorithm is based on the Mumford-Shah functional and the Allen-Cahn (AC) equation. The segmented phase-field profile is similar to the solution of the CH equation, that is, it has hyperbolic tangent profile across interfacial transition region. We use unconditionally stable schemes to solve the governing equations. As a test problem, we take domain rearrangement of lipid bilayers. Numerical results demonstrate that comparison of the evolutions with experimental data is a good benchmark test for validating a mathematical model.
