  • In this study, terpolymer of vinylidene fluoride (VDF), trifluoroethylene (TrFE), and chlorotrifluoroethylene (CTFE) were prepared by suspension polymerization using di-tertiary-butyl peroxide (DTBP) as an initiator. The structural characteristics including microstructure and chain conformation of the polymers have been carefully elucidated as a function of the chemical composition using NMR, FT-IR. The intensity of absorption bands of the $\beta$-phase gradually decreases and the $\gamma$-phase increases with the increment of CTFE mol%. The analysis results of DSC shows that the Curie phase transition temperature ($T_c$) of the terpolymer gradually shifts to ambient temperature and trace becomes smaller and broader with the increment of CTFE mol%. Also, activation energies of the samples were calculated by Freeman-Carroll method.

  • Remote sensing through atmospheric turbulence had been hard works for a long time, because wavefront distortion due to the Earth's atmospheric turbulence deteriorates image quality. But due to the appearance of adaptive optics, it is no longer difficult things. Adaptive optics is the technology to correct random optical wavefront distortions in real time. For past three decades, research on adaptive optics has been performed actively. Currently, most of newly built telescopes have adaptive optical systems. Adaptive optical system is typically composed of three parts, wavefront sensing, wavefront correction and control. In this work, the wavefront sensing technology for adaptive optical system is treated. More specifically, shearing interferometers and Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensors are considered. Both of them are zonal wavefront sensors and measure the slope of a wavefront. . In this study, the shearing interferometer is made up of four right-angle prisms, whose relative sliding motions provide the lateral shearing and phase shifts necessary for wavefront measurement. Further, a special phase-measuring least-squares algorithm is adopted to compensate for the phase-shifting error caused by the variation in the thickness of the index-matching oil between the prisms. Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensors are widely used in adaptive optics for wavefront sensing. It uses an array of identical positive lenslets. And each lenslet acts as a subaperture and produces spot image. Distortion of an input wavefront changes the location of spot image. And the slope of a wavefront is obtained by measuring this relative deviation of spot image. Structures and measuring algorithms of each sensor will be presented. Also, the results of wavefront measurement will be given. Using these wavefront sensing technology, an adaptive optical system will be built in the future.

  • A sediment trap had been deployed at 1250 m depth in the Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP) from September 2009 to July 2010, with the aim of understanding the temporal and vertical variability of particle flux. During the monitoring period, total particle flux varied from 12.4 to 101.0 mg m-2day-1, with the higher fluxes in January-March 2010. Biogenic particle flux varied in phase with the total particle flux. The increase in total particle flux during January-March 2010 was attributed to the enhanced biological production in the surface layer caused by wind-driven mixing in response to the seasonal shifts in the location of the Intertropical convergence zone. The export ratio (e-ratio) was estimated using the particulate organic carbon flux and satellite-derived net primary production data. The estimated e-ratios changed between 0.8% and 2.8% (1.4±0.6% on average). The ratio recorded in the negative phase of Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) was similar to the previous results obtained from the ETP during the 1992/93 periods in the positive phase of PDO. This suggests that the regime shift of the PDO is not related to the carbon export ratio.

  • The avian pineal as well as the retina has been known to contain several types of photoreceptors with different visual pigments such as rhodopsin, iodopsin and the pineal specific opsin, pinopsin. These organs are also known to have circadian clock to regulate melatonin production. Exposure of animals to light causes a decline of the melatonin level and the phase shifts of melatonin rhythms in the pineal and retina. Therefore, the circadian clock system of these organs seem to consist of three elements, i.e., light input, oscillator and melatonin output systems. In birds, it was suggested that rhodopsin might be involved in the entrainment of pineal melatonin rhythms from the action spectrum experiment for controlling NAT activity rhythms. However, there are much more pinopsin-immunoreactive (Pino-IR) cells than rhodopsin (Rho-IR) and iodopsin (Iodo-IR) cells in the avian pineal. We found that Pino-IR cells appeared earlier embryonic stages than Rho-IR and Iodo-IR cells. So, we tried to identify the visual pigments involved in the circadian melatonin rhythms in the pineal and retina. Organ cultured pineals were exposed to monochromatic light to find out which opsin participates in regulation of melatonin rhythms. The action spectra showed a peak at 475nm, suggesting that pinopsin is the major photopigment to regulate melatonin production in birds.

  • In order to understand the initial interaction of the substrates malonate, ATP, and CoA with malonyl-CoA synthetase, the catalytic product malonyl-CoA was characterized by NMR spectroscopy and molecular modeling. To assign proton and carbon chemical shifts, two-dimensional $^1H-^1H$ DQF-COSY and $^1H-^{13}C$ HMBC experiments were used. The structure of malonyl-CoA in the solution phase was determined based on distance constraints from NOESY and ROESY spectra. The structures were well-converged around the pantetheine region with the pairwise RMSD value of 0.08 nm. The solution structure exhibited a compact folded conformation with intramolecular hydrogen bonds among its carbonyl and hydroxyl groups. These findings will help us to understand the initial interaction of malonate and CoA with malonyl-CoA synthetase.

  • A simultaneous measurement of the wall skin friction and near-wall streamwise velocity fluctuations is performed using hot film and hot wire anemometers to investigate the relation between them. Near-wall turbulence statistics measured with a hot-wire probe are in good agreement with previous results. Turbulence properties of the wall skin friction fluctuations measured with a hot film also show fairly good agreements with those measured by others except that rms level is lower in the present study. Long-time averaged space- time correlations show that the wall skin friction is highly correlated with a turbulence structure which is tilted from the wall in the streamwise direction. Tilting angles are obtained from the phase shifts between the wall skin-friction and streamwise velocity fluctuations. The convection velocity of the near-wall streamwise velocity obtained from the space-time correlation is in good agreement with that from the direct numerical simulation database.

  • The comparative influence of two nanoparticles [viz., superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPION) and nanobarium titanate (NBT)] upon the in vitro and in situ low-density polyethylene (LDPE) biodegradation efficiency of a potential polymer-degrading microbial consortium was studied. Supplementation of 0.01% concentration (w/v) of the nanoparticles in minimal broth significantly increased the bacterial growth, along with early onset of the exponential phase. Under in vitro conditions, ${\lambda}$-max shifts were quicker with nanoparticles and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) illustrated significant changes in CH/$CH_2$ vibrations, along with introduction of hydroxyl residues in the polymer backbone. Moreover, simultaneous thermogravimetric-differential thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTG-DTA) reported multiple-step decomposition of LDPE degraded in the presence of nanoparticles. These findings were supported by scanning electron micrographs (SEM), which revealed greater dissolution of the film surface in the presence of nanoparticles. Furthermore, progressive degradation of the film was greatly enhanced when it was incubated under soil conditions for 3 months with the nanoparticles. The study highlights the significance of bacteria-nanoparticle interactions, which can dramatically influence key metabolic processes like biodegradation. The authors also propose the exploration of nanoparticles to influence various other microbial processes for commercial viabilities.

  • In this paper, thermal conductivities of carbon-phenolic 8-harness satin weave composite, ACP302, were measured and predicted. In the analysis, the satin weave unit cell was identified and modeled discretely by 3-dimensional finite elements, considering the interlaced fiber tow architecture microscopically. At the unit cell boundary, the corresponding periodic boundary conditions were applied. The results were analyzed to investigate the effect of microstructural parameters such as stacking phase shifts, waviness ratio, and fiber volume fraction. The conductivities were also obtained by experiments and compared with the numerical results.

  • Shifts in the activity and diversity of microbes involved in aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbon degradation in contaminated soil were investigated. Subsurface soil was collected from a gas station that had been abandoned since 1995 owing to ground subsidence. The total petroleum hydrocarbon content of the sample was approximately 2,100 mg/kg, and that of the soil below a gas pump was over 23,000 mg/kg. Enrichment cultures were grown in mineral medium that contained hexadecane (H) or naphthalene (N) at a concentration of 200 mg/l. In the Henrichment culture, a real-time PCR assay revealed that the 16S rRNA gene copy number increased from $1.2{\times}10^5$to $8.6{\times}10^6$with no lag phase, representing an approximately 70-fold increase. In the N-enrichment culture, the 16S rRNA copy number increased about 13-fold after 48 h, from $6.3{\times}10^4$to $8.3{\times}10^5$. Microbial communities in the enrichment cultures were studied by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis and by analysis of 16S rRNA gene libraries. Before the addition of hydrocarbons, the gas station soil contained primarily Alpha- and Gammaproteobacteria. During growth in the H-enrichment culture, the contribution of Bacteriodetes to the microbial community increased significantly. On the other hand, during N-enrichment, the Betaproteobacteria population increased conspicuously. These results suggest that specific phylotypes of bacteria were associated with the degradation of each hydrocarbon.
