A diesel-degrading bacterium, Gordonia sp. SD8, was isolated from soil contaminated with petroleum, and its diesel degradation was characterized in a soil as well as a liquid culture system. SD8 could grow in the mineral salt medium supplemented with diesel as a sole carbon and energy source. The maximum specific growth rate ($0.67{\pm}0.05\;d^{-1}$) and diesel degradation rate ($1,727{\pm}145$ mg-TPH $L^{-1}\;d^{-1}$) of SD8 showed at 20,000 mg-TPH $L^{-1}$ and $30^{\circ}C$, and then this bacterium could degrade high strength of diesel of 40,000 mg-TPH $L^{-1}$. The residual diesel concentration in the inoculated soil with SD8 was 3,724 mg-TPH kg-dry $soil^{-1}$ after 17 days, whereas the diesel concentration in the non-inoculated soil was $8,150{\pm}755$ mg-TPH kg-dry $soil^{-1}$. These results indicate that Gordonia sp. SD8 can serve as a promising microbial resource for the bioremediaion of contaminated soil with petroleum hydrocarbons including diesel.

A variety of physical, chemical, and microbiological techniques have been developed to deal with soil and groundwater contamination. However, in the presence of the large portion of soil micro-environments, contaminant rebound and/or tailing have been frequently reported. Case study of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) removal by full-scale land farming showed that contaminant rebound and/or tailing occurred in 9 out of total 21 cases and subsequently resulted in problems of a long term operation to satisfy TPH guidelines of contaminated soil and groundwater. The main cause of contaminant rebound and tailing is considered to be the strong interactions between contaminants and micro-environments including micro-particles, micro-pores, and organic matter. Thus, this study reviewed the effects of soil micro-environments of soil and groundwater on the removal efficiency for both heavy metals and petroleum contaminants. In addition, the various methods of sampling, analysis, and assessment of soil micro-environments were evaluated. Thorough understanding of the effects of soil micro-environments on contaminant removal will be essential to achieve a cost-effective and efficient solution to contaminated sites.

In this study, the soil remediation by landfarming was carried out using microbial activators. Feasibility studies and reduction capacity of TPH(Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons) were investigated in order to find out how fast and eco-friendly the contaminated soil can be recovered. The lab-test confirmed not only the performance and degradation efficiency of microbial activators but also the effect of TPH reduction in the contaminated soil. The optimum growth conditions for indigenous microorganisms were identified using microbial activators. Based on the results of TPH removal, although there had been a little of difference in between natural decomposition and microbial activators until 20 days, the sample groups of microbial activators were higher than the control ones after 20 days. Microbial activators were applied to the field experiments on landfarming. Based on the results of removal rate in each floor of soil, it was found that the removal rates were 85.8 % in the upper, 84.4 % in the middle, and 66.10 % in the bottom. Considering that the reduction rate of TPH for the control group averaged 71.1%, the microbial activators might not be fully transferred into the bottom, which resulted from the piles of soil. As the piles have already reached 1 m in the field experiments, the low piles of soil under 0.6 m may enhance the treatment efficiency of TPH.
Three bioremediation methods, natural attenuation (NA), biostimulation (BS) and bioaugmentation (BA) were applied to remediate diesel-contaminated soil, with their remediation efficiencies and soil microbial activities compared both with and without surfactant (Tween 80). BA treatment employing Rhodococcus sp. EH831 was the most effective for the remediation of diesel-contaminated soil at initial remediation stage. On the addition of surfactant, no significant effect on the remediation performance was observed. A negative correlation was found between the dehydrogenase activity (DHA) and residual concentration of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) at below 20,000 mg-$TPHs{\cdot}kg$-dry $soil^{-1}$, as follows: DHA (${\mu}g$-TPF(Triphenylformazan)${\cdot}g$-dry $soil^{-1}\;d^{-1}$) = -0.02 ${\times}$ TPHs concentration (mg-$TPHs{\cdot}kg$-dry $soil^{-1}$) + 425.76 (2500 ${\leq}$ TPHs concentration ${\leq}$ 20000, p < 0.01).
Cheju Island formed by Quarternary volcanism provides highly permeable hydrogeological environment. To meet the increasing demand of water in the island, many groundwater wells have been developed. The environmental isotopes(oxygen-18, deuterium, tritium) and chemical analysis of water samples from the eastern part of the island were carried out to ascertain whether groundwater in the eastern part of the island was contaminated by sea water. The result of tritium analysis indicated fast infiltration of meteoric water into underground and rapid mixing process between rain water and groundwater. The results of oxygen-18 and deuterium analysis demonstrated that most of the wells in the eastern part of the island were influenced by sea water intrusion. Chemical analysis of water samples revealed that most groundwater in study area were classified into Na-Cl type and showed high chloride/bicarbonate ratios. Sea water intrusion in the northeastern part of the island has proceeded at least 3 km within the coastaline, and in the south eastern part about 700m.
The effects of soil venting on the leaching potential of residual gasoline were characterized by applying a simple multi-component volatilization/dissolution model based on Raoult's law. The validity of Raoult's law in describing dissolution of gasoline was evaluated separately using both pure gasoline and gasoline contaminated soil. The aqueous concentrations of gasoline components equilibrated with pure gasoline could be described by Raoult's law within one order of magnitude, regardless of the composition of the gasoline. The leaching concentrations from contaminated soil could be well predicted at a relatively high gasoline concentration in soil. However, after 93.5% removal of gasoline by venting, the calculated values were higher than the experimental values by 50∼100%. A model involving multi-component evaporation and dissolution was applied and the results were compared with the experimental values. Possible causes of the discrepancy between the predicted values and experimental values were given.
The treatment of petroleum contaminated soil requires various physico-chemical remediation technologies which are efficient in time and can reduce the possibility of secondary contamination by themselves In this study, an innovated soil washing process was proposed to treat the diesel-contaminated soil. Micro-bubbles, which were generated by hydrogen peroxide, deserted and floated the contaminants. Soils less than #60(0.25mm) were artificially contaminated by 6,500mg TPH/kg dry soil initially. The process was examined for pH, the soil to water mixing ratio, concentration of $H_2O$$_2$, and contacting times. In the case of less than #60 soil, maximum removal efficiency(60%) was obtained at pH 12. 1.0% hydrogen peroxide, and 1 : 5 soil to water mixing ratio for 1 hour.
Nonaqueous phase liquids(NAPL) not readily dissolved in water exist as a separate fluid phase. Groundwater contamination by NAPL such as organic solvents and petroleum hydrocarbons becomes major public concerns because of their long-term persistence in the subsurFace and their ability to contaminate large volumes of wate. Dense.-than-water NAPL(DNAPL) spilled into the subsurface penetrate through the saturated zone and ultimately form DNAPL pools on the bottom of the aquifer. The dissolution of DNAPL from these pools depends on the molecular diffusion coefficient, the vertical dispersivity, the groundwater velocity, the solubility, and the pool length. In this study, the vertical transverse dispersion coefficients for simulating the dissolution of DNAPL from such pools were obtained from the dissolution experiment. Under the experimental conditions used, the vertical transverse dispersion coefficients calculated were 1.86$cm^2$/day, 2.90$cm^2$/day and 4.51$cm^2$/4ay for seepage velocities of 59.2cm/day, 94.3cm/day and 158.0cm/day, respectively. And the vertical transverse dispersivity was 0.03024cm.

Samples used for the enrichment culture were collected from the sea water of suspected chronic petroleum contamination in the vicinity of Pusan, Chungmu and Ulsan ports, Korea. Alkaline Iysis and agarose gel electrophoresis techniques were employed to screen these isolates for the presence of plasmid DNA. There were n little differences in the percentage of isolates containing plasmids between sampling sites of unpolluted sen water (22%) and polluted son water (25%). Bacterial isolates taken from the Bunker-C oil enriched culture showed significantly more plasmid incidence (29%). About two thirds of strains grown on a variety of hydrocarbons were Gram negative strains of which 33% contained one or more plasmids. Multiple plasmids were observed in 23% of the plasmid-carrying strains. Forty one percent of the plasmids detected were estimated to have a mass of 20 kb or more.
In this study, Fenton oxidation was applied to railroad track ballasts contaminated with small amounts of oil. In order to perform the experiment on Fenton oxidation, petroleum contaminated ballast was collected from the railroad track and experiments on major factors of the remediation process were implemented in the laboratory. Then, the feasibility of insitu Fenton oxidation was investigated for the railroad track that was partially contaminated with oil. As a result, the residual TPH concentration of ballast was reduced to about 1,000 mg/kg-ballast in laboratory experiments using 0.1 mol Fe/L $H_2O_2$. Due to the drainage structure of the track bed, a considerable amount of $H_2O_2$ was released below the ballast without the sufficient reaction with the contaminated ballast; therefore, additional studies are necessary for the effective field application of Fenton oxidation.
