  • An Inverse modal perturbation method was applied to estimate the assessments of the damages at the large-scaled marine structure, such as pier or dolphin, from the structural dynamic natural frequencies and mode shape. Vibrations of structural stiffness, natural frequencies and mode shapes from the eigenvalue analysis lead to the modal peturbation equations, which were considered with a second order term. This paper estimates the assessments of the damages for the structure with the decreased stiffness and shows the convergence of perturbation equation.

  • The perturbation approach is applied to solve the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, and its valid range has been determined by comparing with the results of the split-step Fourier method over a wide range of parameter values. With γ= 2㎞/sup -1/mW/sup -1/, the critical distance for the first order perturbation approach is estimated to be(equation omitted). The critical distance, Z/sub c/, is defined as the distance at which the normalized square deviation compared to the split-step Fourier method reaches 10/sup -3/. Including the second order perturbation will increase Z/sub c/ more than a factor of two, but the increased computation load makes the perturbation approach less attractive. In addition, it is shown mathematically that the perturbation approach is equivalent to the Volterra series approach, which can be used to design a nonlinear equalizer (or compensator). Finally, the perturbation approach is applied to obtain the sinusoidal response of the fiber, and its range of validity has been studied.

  • In this paper, we focus an optimal policy focus optimal class of (s, S) inventory control systems. To this end, we use the perturbation analysis and apply a stochastic optimization algorithm to minimize the average cost over a period. We obtain the gradients of objective function with respect to ordering amount S and reorder point s via a combined perturbation method. This method uses the infinitesimal perturbation analysis and the smoothed perturbation analysis alternatively according to occurrences of ordering event changes. Our simulation results indicate that the optimal estimates of s and S obtained from a stochastic optimization algorithm are quite accurate. We consider that this may be due to the estimated gradients of little noise from the regenerative system simulation, and their effect on search procedure when we apply the stochastic optimization algorithm. The directions for future study stemming from this research pertain to extension to the more general inventory system with regard to demand distribution, backlogging policy, lead time, and review period. Another directions involves the efficiency of stochastic optimization algorithm related to searching procedure for an improving point of (s, S).

  • This paper is concerned with the application of perturbation method to the dynamic analysis of free-free beam. In general, the rigid-body motions and elastic vibrations are analyzed separately. However, the rigid-body motions cause vibrations and elastic vibrations also affect rigid-body motions in turn, which indicates that the rigid-body motions and elastic vibrations are coupled in nature. The resulting equations of motion are hybrid and nonlinear. We can discretize the equations of motion by means of admissible functions but still we have to cope with nonlinear equations. In this paper, we propose the use of perturbation method to the coupled equations of motion. The resulting equations consist of zero-order equations of motion which depict the rigid-body motions and first-order equations of motion which depict the perturbed rigid-body motions and elastic vibrations. Numerical results show the efficacy of the proposed method.

  • In this paper, we suggest the exact perturbation analysis(Exact_PA) technique with respect to the buffer storage in tandem queueing networks, through which the optimal buffer storage design problem is considered. The discrete event dynamic equations for the departure time of a customer are presented together with the basic properties of Full Out(FO) and No Input(NI) with respect to the buffer storage. The new perturbation rules with respect to the buffer storage are suggested, from which the exact perturbed path can be obtained. The optimal buffer storage problem is presented by introducing a performance measure consisting of the throughput and the buffer storage cost. An optimization algorithm maximizing this performance measure is derived by using the Exact_PA technique. The proposed perturbation analysis technique and the optimization algorithm are validated by numerical examples.

  • In this study, flow in a porous medium is analyzed using a computer-extended perturbation series solution. The flow is modelled as a creeping flow in a periodically constricted channel. The channel walls have a sinusoidally varying width and the flow is analyzed in terms of its vorticity and stream functions in the Stokes flow regime. The perturbation series in terms of a small parameter, average width to length ratio, is extended with a computer resulting in purely asymptotic series and Pade summation is used to obtain final results. Resulting flow shows flow separations in the widening section and immobile zones in the widest section of the flow regime with reattachment in the narrowing section. Analysis of the flow separation phenomena resulted in a correlation between the two geometric parameters of the channel walls to predict the onset of flow separation in the Stokes flow regime.

  • The perturbation parameters like jitter, shimmer, and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) are largely estimated in the particular segment from the subjective or whole portion of the given pathological voice signal although there are many possible regions to be able to analyze the voice signals. In this paper, the pathological voice signals were classified as type 1, 2, 3, or 4 according to narrow band spectrogram and the value differences of the perturbation parameters extracted in the subjective and entire portion tended to be getting bigger as from type 1 to type 4 signals. Therefore, sample selection method based on moving window to analyze type 2 and 3 signals as well as type 1 signals is proposed. Although type 3 signals cannot be analyzed using the perturbation analysis, the type 3 signals by selecting out the samples in which error count is less than 10 through moving window were analyzed. At present, there is no method to be able to analyze the type 4 signals. Future research will endeavor to determine the best way to evaluate such voices.

  • In this paper, we consider an optimal allocation of constant service efforts in queueing network to maximize the system throughput. For this purpose, using the perturbation analysis, we apply a stochastic optimization algorithm to two types of queueing systems. Our simulation results indicate that the estimates obtained from a stochastic optimization algorithm for a two-tandem queuing network are very accurate, and those for closed loop manufacturing system are a little apart from the known optimal allocation. We find that as simulation time increases for obtaining a new gradient (performance measure with respect to decision variables) by perturbation algorithm, the estimates tend to be more stable. Thus, we consider that it would be more desirable to have more accurate sensitivity of performance measure by enlarging simulation time rather than more searching steps with less accurate sensitivity. We realize that more experiments on various types of systems are needed to identify such a relationship with regards to stopping rule, the size of moving step, and updating period for sensitivity.

  • In this study, a general perturbation method is presented to reanalysis dynamic response of base-isolated systems. The perturbation is expanded to general order and which provide the formulation of perturbed solutions. in which eigensolutions of non-modified system are treated as unperturbed solutions. The accuracy of present method is tested using a 2-DOF system with isolator, where the stiffness and damping coefficients of isolator are changed, respectively, The reanalyzed eigensolutions and response using perturbed solutions are successfully approached to exact ones after just first perturbation. Supposing the practical criterion as ${\pm}5%$ error, the modification range of -50%~30% from original system can be allowed for the first order perturbation. Using higher order solutions, the applicable range will be wide.
