  • During the past three or four decades, the characteristics of turbulent flow have been studied extensively because of their scientific and academic importance. This research deals with the periodic flow oscillation without swirling flow in a 180 degree circular tube using hot wire anemometry, microphone and accelerometer. The frequency regions are observed through the structured oscillation from spectrum. This work carried out to measure the sound level for each Reynolds number, $6{\times}10^4$, $8{\times}10^4$ and $1{\times}10^5$ respectively at the test tube without swirl flow.

  • The spectrum of impulse response signal from an impulse hammer testing is widely used to obtain frequency response function(FRF) of the structure. However the FRFs obtained from impact hammer testing have not only leakage errors but also finite record length errors when the record length for the signal processing is not sufficiently long. The errors cannot be removed with the conventional signal analyzer which treats the signals as if they are always steady and periodic. (omitted)

  • This paper proposes an adaptive feedforward controller (AFC) based on LMS for periodic disturbance rejection in active magnetic bearing system. The proposed controller does not alter the stability and robustness of the existing AMB system. It is shown that the control delay due to the eddy current as well as runout and unbalance can be identified and compensated using the estimated displacement from the measured magnetic flux. The simulation results confirm that the proposed scheme successfully identifies and compensates for the runout, unbalance and eddy current effect, leading to a high-precision magnetic bearing system.

  • While a rotating inner cylinder executes a periodic translational motion in concentric annulus, the vibration of the rotating inner cylinder is induced by fluid-dynamic forces acting on the cylinder. In the previous study related to journal bearing, the unsteady viscous flow in the annulus and the fluid-dynamic forces were evaluated based on a numerical approach. Considering the dynamic-characteristics of unsteady viscous flow, an approximate analytical method has been developed for estimating added mass, viscous damping and fluid-stiffness coefficients. For the study of flow-induced vibrations and related instabilities, it is of interest to separate the coefficients from the fluid-dynamic forces. The added-mass and viscous damping coefficients for very narrow annular configurations, as journal bearing. can be approximated by considering the gap ratio to the radius of inner cylinder, while the fluid-stiffness coefficient is related to the Reynolds number, the oscillatory Reynolds number and the gap ratio.

  • The results are summarized as what follows: 1) The modeling of thin beams, which is a continuous system, into a two DOF system yields satisfactory results for the chaotic vibrations. 2) The concept of "natural forcing function" derived from the eigenfunction of the bifurcation mode is very useful for the natural responses of the system. 3) Among the perturbation techniques, HBM is a good estimate for the response when the geometry of motion is known. 4) It is known that there exist periodic solutions of coupled mode response for somewhat large damping and forcing amplitude, as well as weak damping and forcing. 5) The route-to-chaos related with lateral instability in thin beams is composed of period-doubling and quasiperiodic process and finally follows discontinuous period-doubling process. 6) The chaotic vibrations are verified by using Poincare maps, FFT's, time responses, trajectories in the configuration space, and the very powerful technique Lyapunov characteristics exponents.exponents.

  • Tapping mode atomic force microscopy (TM-AFM) utilizes the dynamic response of a resonating probe tip as it approaches and retracts from a sample to measure the topography and material properties of a nanostructure. We present recent results based on numerical techniques that yield new perspectives and insight into AFM. It is compared that the dynamic models including van der Waals and Derjaguin-Muller-Toporov(DMT) or Johnson-Kendall-Roberts(JKR) contact forces demonstrates that periodic solutions can be represented with respect to the approach distance and excitation frequency.

  • The dynamic stability of spinning beam with free boundary conditions for both edges subjected to a tip follower force $P_0+P_1cos{\Omega}t$ is analyzed. It is studied that the beam has a concentrated mass. and then the effects of the axial locations of the mass are studied. The beam is modelled with the Timoshenko type shear deformations. The Hamilton's principle is used to derive the equations of motion, and the critical spinning speed of a beam subjected to a follower force with various non-dimensional parameters is investigated. The finite elements are used with $C^0$ continuity to analyze the spinning beam model, and the method of multiple scales is tried to investigate the dynamic instability regions. The governing equations of motion involve periodic coefficients, which are not in the form of standard Mathieu-Hill equations. The result shows that the concentrated mass increases the dynamic stability of the spinning free-free beam subjected to a thrust.

  • A modeling method for the modal and the transient vibration analysis of a multi-packet blade system excited by nozzle jet forces is presented in this paper. Blades are idealized as cantilever beams and the elastic structures like disc and shroud connecting blades are modeled as coupling stiffnesses. A modified Campbell diagram is proposed to identify true resonance frequencies of the multi-packet blade system. Different from the SAFE diagram that employs three dimensional space, the modified Campbell diagram Proposed in this study employs a plane to find the true resonance frequencies. To verify the existence of true resonance frequencies, nozzle jet forces are modeled as periodic forces and transient vibration analysis were performed with the modeling method.

  • The power input to an infinite cylindrical shell excited by a point force is investigated. The circumferential direction and axial direction of the cylindrical shell is assumed as a two-dimensional unbounded medium, and the point force is replaced as a periodic array of imaginary sources. The spatial Fourier transform is taken from the equation of motion of the cylindrical shell, which is derived from the static model of Donell-Mushtari-Vlasov. The inverse Fourier transform is taken to derive the vibration responses. Mobility from out-of-plane forces and in-plane forces are derived from the obtained vibration responses. The theory is applied to a cylindrical shell excited by a normal direction of point force.

  • When the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident occurred in March, a hydrogen explosion in the reactor building at the 4th unit of Fukushima plants lead to a big surprise because the full core of the unit 4 reactor had been moved and stored underwater at the spent nuclear fuel storage pool for periodic maintenance. It was because the potential criticality in the fuel storage pool by coolant loss may yield more severe situation than the similar accident happened inside the reactor vessel. In the paper, the safety state of the spent fuel storage pool and rack structures of the domestic nuclear plants would be reviewed and compared with the Fukushima plant case by engineering viewpoint of potential severe accidents.
