  • Objectives The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of liver-tonification acupuncture (LTA) on periodic muscle cramps (MC). Methods We retrospectively reviewed medical records of 28 patients treated for periodic MC with LTA in a Korean medicine clinic. Patients were treated with (A) LTA alone, (B) LTA and treatments for myofascial meridian, or (C) LTA and treatments for other diseases. We mainly investigated effectiveness of treatments, the number of treatments, the number of relapses, and time to relapse. Results After treatments, periodic MC disappeared in all patients except two in group C. The number of treatments in group C was significantly greater than that of group A (p<0.05). Periodic MC recurred in one patient in each of groups A and C, but symptoms disappeared after re-treatments. Periodic MC did not recur for a median of 7.0, 8.5, and 5.0 weeks in groups A, B, and C, respectively. Conclusions We found some therapeutic effects of LTA treatments for periodic MC in middle-aged and elderly patients.

  • Characteristics of flow and heat transfer have been studied numerically in a square duct with a periodic pressure gradient. The flow in a duct was assumed to be fully developed and constant heat flux was imposed at the surfaces of a square duct. The distributions of axial velocity and time-space averaged temperature are investigated with angular velocity and amplitude ratio at a given Reynolds number 1000. When the periodic pressure gradient was imposed axially in a duct, the reverse flow may be occurred near the duct wall. The magnitude of this reverse flow increases as the amplitude ratio increases or as the angular frequency decreases. In the ranges of the amplitude ratio and the angular velocity in present investigation, the ratio of the periodic time space averaged temperature to the nonperiodic space averaged temperature has been found to be greater than one. This means that the cooling effect at the duct walls deteriorates with a periodic situation compared with nonperiodic one.

  • In this paper, the expressions of the estimated information of a single-phase enhanced phase-locked loop (EPLL), when input signal contains harmonics and a DC offset while the fundamental component takes step changes, are derived. The theoretical analysis results indicate that in the estimated information, the nth-order harmonics cause n+1th-order periodic ripples, and the DC offset causes a periodic ripple at the fundamental frequency. Step changes of the amplitude, phase angle and frequency of the fundamental component cause a transient periodic ripple at twice the frequency. These periodic ripples deteriorate the performance of the EPLL. A hybrid filter based EPLL (HF-EPLL) is proposed to eliminate these periodic ripples. A delay signal cancellation filter is set at the input of the EPLL to cancel the DC offset and even-order harmonics. A sliding Goertzel transform-based filter is introduced into the amplitude estimation loop and frequency estimation loop to eliminate the periodic ripples caused by the residual input odd-order harmonics and step change of the input fundamental component. The parameter design rules of the two filters are discussed in detail. Experimental waveforms of both the conventional EPLL and the proposed HF-EPLL are given and compared with each other to verify the theoretical analysis and advantages of the proposed HF-EPLL.

  • In the earlier application of the spline finite strip method(FSM), the uniform B3-spline functions were used in the longitudinal direction while the conventional interpolation functions were used in the transverse direction to construct the displacement filed in a strip. To overcome the shortcoming of the uniform B3-spline, non-periodic B-spline was developed as the displacement function. The use of non-periodic B3-spline function requires no tangential vectors at both ends to interpolate the geometry of shell and the Kronecker delta property is also satisfied at the end boundaries. Recently, non-periodic spline FSM which was modified to have a multiple knots at the boundary was developed for the shell analysis and applied to the analysis of bridges. In the formulation of a non-symmetric spline finite strip method, the concepts of non-periodic B3-spline and a stress-resultant finite strip with drilling degrees of freedom for a shell are used. The introduction of non-symmetrically spaced knots in the longitudinal direction allows the selective local refinement to improve the accuracy of solution at the connections or at the location of concentrated load. A number of numerical tests were performed to prove the accuracy and efficiency of the present study.

  • Flutter is a dangerous phenomenon encountered in flexible structures subjected to aerodynamic forces. This includes aircraft, helicopter blades, engine rotors, buildings and bridges. Flutter occurs as a result of interactions between aerodynamic, stiffness and inertia forces on a structure. The conventional method for designing a rotor blade to be free from flutter instability throughout the helicopter's flight regime is to design the blade so that the aerodynamic center (AC), elastic axis (EA) and center of gravity (CG) are coincident and located at the quarter-chord. While this assures freedom from flutter, it adds constraints on rotor blade design which are not usually followed in fixed wing design. Periodic Structures have been in the focus of research for their useful characteristics and ability to attenuate vibration in frequency bands called "stop-bands". A periodic structure consists of cells which differ in material or geometry. As vibration waves travel along the structure and face the cell boundaries, some waves pass and some are reflected back, which may cause destructive interference with the succeeding waves. In this work, we analyze the flutter characteristics of a helicopter blades with a periodic change in their sandwich material using a finite element structural model. Results shows great improvements in the flutter forward speed of the rotating blade obtained by using periodic design and increasing the number of periodic cells.

  • The purpose of this study was to propose useful suggestion by analyzing preventive replacement policy under which there are minor and major failure. Here, major failure is defined as the failure of system which causes the system to stop working, however, the minor failure is defined as the situation in which the system is working but there exists inconvenience for the user to experience the degradation of performance. For this purpose, we formulated an expected cost rate as a function of periodic replacement time and the number of system update cycles. Then, using the probability and differentiation theory, we analyzed the cost rate function to find the optimal points for periodic replacement time and the number of system update cycles. Also, we present a numerical example to show how to apply our model to the real and practical situation in which even under the minor failure, the user of system is not willing to replace or repair the system immediately, instead he/she is willing to defer the repair or replacement until the periodic or preventive replacement time. Optimal preventive replacement timing using two variables, which are periodic replacement time and the number of system update cycles, is provided and the effects of those variables on the cost are analyzed.

  • This study suggests a generalized availability and safety evaluation model to evaluate the influences to the system's fault tolerant capabilities depending on automatic fault detection function such as the automatic periodic testings. The conventional evaluation model of automatic fault detection function deals only with the self diagnostics, and supposes that the fault detection coverage of self diagnostics is always constant. But all of the fault detection methods could be degraded. For example, the periodic surveillance test has the potential human errors or test equipment errors, the self diagnostics has the potential degradation of built-in logics, and the automatic periodic testing has the potential degradation of automatic test facilities. The suggested evaluation models have incorporated the loss or erroneous behaviors of the automatic fault detection methods. The availability and the safety of each module of the safety grade platform have been evaluated as they were applied the automatic periodic test methodology and the fault tolerant evaluation models. The availability and safety of the safety grade platform were improved when applied the automatic periodic testing. Especially the fault tolerant capability of the processor module with a weak self-diagnostics and the process parameter input modules were dramatically improved compared to the conventional cases. In addition, as a result of the safety evaluation of the digital reactor protection system, the system safety of the digital parts was improved about 4 times compared to the conventional cases.

  • Flutter is a dangerous phenomenon encountered in flexible structures subjected to aerodynamic forces. This includes aircraft, buildings and bridges. Flutter occurs as a result of interactions between aerodynamic, stiffness, and inertia forces on a structure. In an aircraft, as the speed of the flow increases, there may be a point at which the structural damping is insufficient to damp out the motion which is increasing due to aerodynamic energy being added to the structure. This vibration can cause structural failure, and therefore considering flutter characteristics is an essential part of designing an aircraft. Scientists and engineers studied flutter and developed theories and mathematical tools to analyze the phenomenon. Strip theory aerodynamics, beam structural models, unsteady lifting surface methods (e.g., Doublet-Lattice) and finite element models expanded analysis capabilities. This may reduce the vibration level of the structure, and hence improve its dynamic performance. In this paper, for the first time, we analyze the flutter characteristics of a wing with a periodic change in its sandwich construction. The new technique preserves the external geometry of the wing structure and depends on changing the material of the sandwich core. The periodic analysis and the vibration response characteristics of the model are investigated using a finite element model for the wing. Previous studies investigating the dynamic bending response of a periodic sandwich beam in the absence of flow have shown promising results.
