  • Advanced drinking water production systems, which not only good quality product water, but also provide easy management and mainenance of facilities, and operate on a smaller site area, have been expected to be developed for some time. We are going ahead with a program to deveop an advanced drinking water production system, using immersed membrane filtration combined with biological activated carbon, to meet the need described above. The demonstration plant tests been conducted with surface water from the Yodo-river since Dec. 1998 to measure treatment performance, reliability, and controllability of the system. The quality of product water has consistently remained at a very high level for about 2 years under controlled conditions. Results showed that the re-circulation granular biological activated carbon could suppress the increase of membrane pressure difference and promote a reduction of dissolved organic matter. (This work has been conducted along the ACT21 Programs.)

  • The photorefractive polymeric composite with good performance was prepared. The carbazole-substituted polysiloxane sensitized by 2,4,7-trinitro-9-fluorenone was used as a photoconducting medium and 1-[4-(2-nitrovinyl)phenyl]piperidine was added as an optically nonlinear chromophore. The photorefractive property of polymer was determined by diffraction efficiency using a 100 ㎛-thick film. The maximum diffraction efficiency ( ηmax) of 71% was obtained at the electric field of 70 V/ ㎛. The potential of the current polymer material as a holographic recording medium was evaluated by the demonstration of holographic recording and subsequent reading of optical image.

  • For the collapse of structures due to the variable repeated load, two types of collapse mechanisms, i.e., incremental collapse and alternating plasticity, exist. Under the similar variable repeated loading conditions there exists shakedown state in the structures. In shakedown state, the number of plastic hinges are not increased and all further loading will be resulted in the elastic moment changes. Namely, under the shakedown state, structures do not collapse. In this investigation, shakedown analysis are performed by composing new computer programs. Basic theories employed to compose the programs are as follows. 1. Newton-Raphson methods are added to the existing matrix method for the plastic analysis. 2. An effort to construct the stiffness of axial and bending springs attached at both ends of the member has been made. By using the programs developed, it is possible to anticipate the collapse mechanisms (Incremental collapse, alternating plasticity). Lastly for the verification of performance of the program, demonstration examples have been solved and the results are compared with other sources.

  • In this paper, a operating characteristics of the 50 kW grid-connected Photovoltaic(PV) Power system which is by means of initial PV datum analyzing is reported. The development of a 50 kW class photovoltaic power generation system including a DC/AC inverter is suggested to investigate the system performance for grid connection. The results of the demonstration test of a 50 kW class grid-connected PV system show that the system utilization rate is 15.6% and the inverter efficiency is 94% at 80% load.

  • Fuzzy system which are based on membership functions and rules, can control nonlinear, uncertian, complex system well. However, Fuzzy controller has problems: It is difficult to design a stable for amateur. To update the then-part membership functions of the fuzzy controller can be designed using the error back-propagation algorithm to be minimized error. Then we could be optimized the system choosing a good performance index. The proposed fuzzy controller based on neural network is applied to control an inverted pendulum for demonstration of the robustness of proposed methodology.

  • Future power plants will be required to adopt some type of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies to reduce their CO2 emissions. One of distinguished CCS techniques expected to resolve the green house effect is to apply the oxy-fuel combustion technique to power plant, and a lot of research/demonstration programs have been going on in the world. In this paper, CO2-capturing power plants based on gas turbine and oxy-fuel combustion are investigated over several types of configurations. As a prior step, simulation model for 500 MW-class combined cycle power plant was set and was used as a reference case. The efficiencies of several power plants was compared and the advantages and disadvanteges was investigated.

  • In this paper a neural network controller called "Feedback-State Learning" for control of the attitude of a wheeled inverted pendulum is presented. For the controller the design of a stable feedback controller is necessary, so the LQR is used for the feedback controller because the LQR has good performance on controlling nonlinear systems. And the neural networks are used for a feed forward controller. The designed controller is applied to the stabilization of a wheeled inverted pendulum. Because of its nonlinear characteristics such as friction and parameter variations in the linearization, the wheeled inverted pendulum is used for demonstration of the effectiveness of the proposed controller.

  • As enterprises use ATM networks for their private networks and as these private networks use public ATM networks for wide area communication, the need for the customers to be able to manage both private and public networks. Currently, some standardization work is being done towards providing this capability to customers. In this paper, we propose a new customer network management (CNM) system architecture for the management of both ATM a private network and a public network in a uniform way. The particular features of the proposed architecture lies in the efficient support of the complex hierarchial TMN manager-agent relationships at M3 and M4 interfaces, and the support of SNMP and CMIP integration which is necessary for the implementation of a CNM system. The TMN hierarchical many-to-many manager-agent relationships are realized by the utilization of CORBA-Based SMK (Shared Management Knowledge) implementation. We have also implemented the prototype of a ATM CNM system, and measures the performance for the demonstration of the suitability of the proposed architecture.

  • Pressure transducers are increasingly used within soil mass or at soil-structure interface for appraisal of stresses acting at point of installation. Calibration of pressure transducers provides a unique relationship between applied pressure and voltage or strain sensed by transducer during various loading conditions and is crucial for proper interpretation of results obtained from pressure transducers. In the present study an in-house calibration device is used to calibrate pressure transducers and the study is divided into two parts: 1) demonstration of developed calibration device for fluid and in-soil calibration of pressure transducers; 2) effect of soil layer thickness on the earth pressure cell (EPC) output. Results obtained from the present study revealed successful performance of the developed calibration device, and significant effect of sand layer thickness on the calibration results. The optimum sand layer thickness is obtained as 1.5 times the diameter of EPC.
