  • The purpose of this study is find out the correlation of level of knowledge of pre-service elementary teacher with space perception ability on 'Earth and Space' of elementary science. During the second semester of 2013, for 15 weeks, the classes were conducted for 3 hours per week and we find out knowledge Understanding degree and select terms offered by 5th grade science courses 'The solar system and the stars', 'Earth and Moon', 'change of seasons' section and measured space perception ability degree of pre-service elementary school teacher with a questionnaire. We analyzed the correlation of understanding level of knowledge in the field of astronomy of pre-service elementary school teacher with space perception ability. The results of the study are presented as follows. First, pre-service elementary school teacher showed a low level of knowledge understanding as it goes the upper grades about upper concept in 'The solar system and the stars', 'Earth and Moon', 'change of seasons' section' of astronomy area of elementary science 'Earth and space sector'. The pre-service elementary school teachers needs to acquire knowledge of astronomy area in elementary school curriculum. Second, pre-service elementary school teacher showed that there are differences individually in 'finding solid body' of sub-element of space perception ability. For this study, an examination tool was made by extracting characteristics of good science class through precedent study investigation and revising it in a questionnaire form of a Likert scale, and conducted to 194 elementary teachers and 320 elementary students. As a result of the study, teachers generally perceived science class positively and teachers with career more than 6 years thought it more positively than them with career less than 5 years. Consequently students have a substantially positive perception level about the practice of the elementary science class, and students of 3th and 4th grade perceived science class positively than 5th and 6th grade in all domains. Finally when analyzing perception difference between teachers and students about the practice of the elementary science class, it appeared that students perceived science class more positively than teachers in most questions.

Second, 82% of the respondents conducted pre-education program, but they mainly conducted safety education. Third, the teacher conducted post-education program less than pre-education program. In the post-education program, the most activities were to express and share knowledge and experience gained from the science museum. Fourth, 52.2% of the teachers provided tasks or activity sheets during science museum field trips. Fifth, the teachers mainly served as safety guide. In addition, the teachers thought that safety guide was the most important role of teacher in science museum field trips. Sixth, the teachers thought that the method of viewing the science museum's collection, which emphasizes the role of docent rather than the teacher, was more educational.

  • Prospective teachers need to have an opportunity to critically examine their initial perception with regard to effective mathematics instruction during the teacher education period. This study analyzed the perception in relation to good mathematics instruction by a total of 265 prospective teachers from four institutes for elementary teacher education using a survey. The results of this study showed that the pre-service teachers regarded learner, teaching and learning method, selection of content, and construction of curriculum as important for high-quality mathematics instruction. However, they revealed relatively low levels of agreement against the importance of instructional materials, classroom environment and atmosphere, and assessment. On the basis of teachers' perception on each element of effective mathematics instruction, this paper raises issues for discussion and includes some implications for teacher education.

  • This study analyzed the teacher's perception for influence of behavioral characteristics of scientifically-gifted students on general students in elementary school science class. To do this, we selected the eight elementary school teachers who were conducting the regular science classes including scientifically-gifted students belonging to the gifted education institutes in Seoul and conducted individual in-depth interviews. The analysis of the results reveal that the teachers mentioned seven behavioral characteristics of scientifically-gifted students in general elementary school science classes.: 'excellent in designing and performing experiments', 'playing a leading role in experiments', 'expressing their abundant prior knowledge frequently', 'attempting their tasks with curiosity and persistence', 'displaying scientific creativity', 'often asking scientific questions in detail', and 'expressing their opinions logically'. These behavioral characteristics of scientifically-gifted students had positive effects on general students, such as 'providing them with a successful experience in conducting experiments', 'improving understanding of science class contents', 'developing scientific thinking and reflective thinking', and 'improving their students' positive experiences about science'. However, the excessive learning-driven behaviors of scientifically-gifted students had negative effects on general students, such as 'limiting opportunities for general students to participate in classes', 'conducting passive exploration centered on results', and 'causing conflicts with general students'. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.
