For the production of trehalose, microorganisms capable of producing trehalose extracellularly were screened from the stock cultures in our laboratory. among them, Micrococcus luteus IFO 12708 showed the highest productivity of trehalose. For the increase of productivity, the mutant strai Hs-208 having higher trehalose production was selected with NTG(N-methyl-N'-nitrosoguanidine) mutagenesis, which led to the decrease of the specific activity of trehalose phosphorylase(3.2-fold) as compared to the wild strain. The optimum condition for the trehalose production was established as follows: 20g/l of glucose and 6g/l of tryptone were used as a sole carbon source and nitrogen source, respectively, and cultivations were carried out at 3$0^{\circ}C$ and pH 6.0. After 20hrs cultivation, addition of 20unit/ml penicillin G led to the higher conversion yield of trehalose. Under the optimum condition, 6.547g/l trehalose was produced with conversion yield of 32.7%.
A strain which showed cephalosporin C resistance and 7-aminocephalosporanic acid sensitivity was isolated from nature. Among the isolates, SS5 was sensitive to cephalosporin C, penicillin G, ampicillin, 7-aminocephalosporanic acid, 6-aminopenicillanic acid, and 7-aminodeacetoxy cephatosporanic acid at concentrations of 1,000 $\mu $g/ml, 2,000 $\mu $g/ml, 3,000 $\mu $g/ml, 30 $\mu $g/ml 100 $\mu $g/ml and 100 $\mu $g/ml, respectively. But SS5 was sensitive at very low concentration of chloramphenicol, kanamycin, neomycin, streptomycin and tetracycline. Since SS5 was sensitive to 7-ACA (30 $\mu $g/ml) and didn't have $\beta $-lactamase activity on the cephalosporin C, SS5 could be useful as an indicator strain for the production of 7-ACA, which is an important precursor for the synthesis of many semisynthetic cephalosporins.
Eighteen strains of Clostpidium perfringens were isolated from the piglets with hemorrhagic enteritis. The characteristics of the outbreaks, clinical signs and lesions were examined. The biochemical properties, type of toxins and susceptibility to antimicrobial agents against the isolates were investigated. 1. The incidence of diarrhea was appeared in 97(22.4%) of 432 piglets examined. 2. The isolation rate of Cl perfingens from the 97 diarrheal faeces were 18.5%(18 strains) 3. The population of Cl perfingens in feces were ranged $10^{8-9}$cfu/g in 5(32.5%) and $10^{3-7}$cfu/g in 13(67.4%) of 18 samples. 4. The toxin type of the 18 isolates investigated by mouse inoculation test was all type C strains of Cl perfringens. 5. As a results of antimicrobial susceptibility test, 18 isolates were higly susceptible to cephalothin, tetracycline and penicillin.
Photosensitization occurred in a 4-month old Holstein calf soon after going onto the pasture lush with green Japanese millet(Echinochloa crusgalli). Skin lesions were restricted to the unpigmented white area of skin. They were most pronounced on the dorsum of the body, diminishing in degree down the sides and were absent from the ventral part. The demarcation between lesions and normal skin was clearcut. There were edema, exudation and sloughing of affected skin on the left gluteal region, and erythema, edema and scab on right scapular region. Interception of the light, discontinuance of Japanese millet ingestion, and the administration of antihistamine and penicillin made the calf rapid recovery. This disease was considered photosensitization due to chlorphyll in ingested Japanese millet.
Fifteen kinds of antibiotics both in liquid or dry stantes wre investigated for the purpose of radiation effect on the antibiotic activities after irradiation. In liquid states, the antibiotics such as amoxyllin, ampicillin, capharolidin and hetacillin were inctivated 90% of their antibiotic activities at radiation doses of 50Krad, and penicillin, dicloxacillin, caphalothin, cloxacillin, erythromycin and caphalexin and kanamycin were decomposed at radiation doses of 1.5Mrad, respectively. In dry states, all antibiotics were stable at radiation doses of 5Mrad. On the other hand, the neomycin in liquid state was rather increased the antiboctic activity about 1.2 and 8 times when the E. coli ATCC 113-3 and B. subtitilis ATCC 6633 were used aas a standard microorganisms, whereas, the decrensed antibiotic activities were observed in S. typhi Ty-2(36.2%), St.faecium(10.79%), B.sphaericus CIA(9.066%) and St.aureus ATCC 6538p(70%).

Thirteen strains of Bacillus thuringiensis were isolated from soil in Korea and characterized. The all strains produced parasporal crystals and spores in their cells. Two strains had bipyramidal crystals, seven strains contianed round ones and four strains had unregular ones. Only minor biochemical characteristics of the thirteen isolates were different and distinctive, however general characteristics were similar to the known serotypes of B. thuringiensis. Two strains were resistant to ampicilin. Three strains were resistant to bacitracin, six strains were resistant to cephalothin, two strains were resistant to colistin, HL-68 strain was resistant to gentamycin, HL-67 strain was resistant to kanamycin and HL-71 was resistant to tetracycline. Two strains were resistant to penicillin G. Four strains were toxic to Bombyx mori larvae and eleven strains were toxic to Culex pipiens larvae.
Streptococcus suis causes meningitis and sepsis in pigs, but human infection has increased over the past few years in those who are exposed to pigs or raw pork. Most cases have occurred in Southeast Asia, but only two cases have been reported in South Korea, presenting with arthritis and meningitis. Here, we report a rare case of S. suis infection, a 60-year-old sailor, who visited the emergency room presenting septicemia, pneumonia with empyema and meningitis, showed full recovery; however, neurologic sequale of severe cognitive dysfunction was present after the usage of antibiotics and percutaneous drainage. S. suis was isolated from blood and pleural fluid and the strain was susceptible to penicillin and vancomycin. Increased awareness of S. suis infection and prevention are warranted.
Leuconostoc spp. is intrinsically resistant against vancomycin and rarely causes the infection in immunocompromised patients. In this report, we describe a fatal case of Leuconostoc lactis bacteremia in a patient with biliary tract stent insertion to resolve the biliary tract obstruction by multiple pseudocysts in the pancreatic head region. Leuconostic lactis isolated from the blood of the patients was confirmed by 16S rRNA sequencing and this isolate was susceptible against most antibiotics, including levofloxacin, penicillin, erythromycin and cefotaxime except vancomycin. The septic shock and multi-organ failure was abruptly progressed due to delayed use of adequate antibiotic. Using vancomycin as the empirical antibiotics in a bacteremic patient by Gram positive cocci, the treatment failures by the isolates with intrinsic resistance against vancomycin have to be considered. In addition, the prompt and accurate identification of Leuconostoc spp. are very important to select the adequate antibiotics.
The present study was conducted to investigate the incidence of Pasteurella multocida infection in cheju swine from March 1994 to December 1994 isolated organisms were identified by the biochemical properties, cellulose serological type and antibiotic susceptibilities. Pasteurella multocida was isolated from the Lungs of 96 pigs with pneumonia(51 %) among 188 slaughtered pigs. The majority of p multocida isolates were identical to those of the standard strains. On the classification of the capsular type of the isolated p multocida it consist of the 88 isolates of type A(91.6%) 2 isolates of type D (2%) and un classified 6 types(6.2%). The majority of the 96 isolates of p multocida highly susceptible to the antibiotics including ampicillin(Am), cephalotin(Ce), erythromycin(Em), gentamycin(Gm), kanamycin(Km), lincomycin(Lm), neomycin(Nm), penicillin(Pc), streptomycin(Sm), solfametoxazol/trimethoprim(Sxt) and tetracycline(Te)
It has been known that the pulmonary mycosis generally results from saphrophytic colonization of pre-existing lung cavities, e.g. , due to pulmonary tuberculosis, abscess, bronchiectasis. or congen-ital cysts. Recently, the authors experienced four cases of the pulmonary mycosis which were all treated surgically, and in our opinion, three of them were considered to arise from secondary saphrophytic colonization of pre-existing tuberculous cavities by serial chest roentgenograms. One of them was actinomycosis which was known as relatively rare pulmonary mycosis, and its clinical experience was previously reported. The purpose of this report is mainly to review our clinical experience and some related literatures with three patients with aspergillosis. Many writers have stressed the sputum culture for aspergillus, immunologic study and serial roentgenographic findings were all important or essential in diagnosing aspergillosis. Surgical resection appears to be the treatment of choice for the mycosis of lung, and systemic administration of effective anti-fungal agents such as amphotericin B for aspergillosis and penicillin for actinomycosis respectively following surgical intervention is usually necessary to eradicate completely.
