The purpose of this study is to prepare the basis for a more objective evaluation of oral fluency by analyzing Korean native speaker's utterance. Traditionally, fluency evaluation tended to rely on the evaluators' experience and subjective idea. Therefore, there has been a need of setting the evaluation standard in numeric form that is easily measurable. In this study, I will analyze Korean native speaker's utterance in focus of pause. Total number of 875 pauses were extracted from the 21st Century Sejong Korean spoken corpus, and the elements before and after the pauses were annotated. From the analysis results, the pauses were divided between fluent pauses and influent pauses. If the length of fluent pauses do not exceed reasonable length of pause for native Korean speakers, there was no point reduction. On the other hand, if the influent pauses are made more frequently than the native Korean speakers, then it is subject to point reduction.

In the process of speech therapy, fluency is acquired and speech rate increases in the process when the behavioral modification strategy, inducing speech fluency by making speech rate slower intentionally in an early stage, is applied. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the pause characteristics in slowed speech intentionally of treated stutterer. In this study, 10 developmental stutterers who had well established fluency in speech were involved. We had collected each 200 syllables sample of intentionally much slowed speech and a little slowed one in reading task. To measure the features of pause, total frequency of pauses, total durations of pauses, average duration of pauses and proportions of pause were investigated. The findings were as follows: Both the total durations and total frequency of pauses of much slowed speech were higher than that of a little slowed one. However, both the average duration and proportions of pauses of much slowed speech were not significantly higher than that of a little slowed one.

This study analyzes different types of pauses in French language - silent pauses and filled pauses -, focussing on their distribution and duration in utterances from a radio interview. Pauses combined with intonation which precede and succeed influence the variability of intonation patterns; initial rising and penultima rising of French intonation. These two patterns characterize contemporary French, specially in face-to-face situation.

이 연구의 목적은 한국어의 휴지 실현에 과제, 세대, 성별이라는 변수가 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 살펴보는 것이다. 이를 위해 구어 코퍼스에서 세대, 성별에 따른 총 48명을 선정하여 두 가지 발화 과제 데이터를 분석하였다. 휴지는 발화에서 출현하는 위치와 들숨 동반 여부에 따라 들숨 동반 발화 말 휴지, 들숨 동반 발화 내 휴지, 들숨 비동반 발화 말 휴지, 들숨 비동반 발화 말 휴지로 구분하여 살펴보았고 각각의 빈도와 길이, 그리고 휴지에 영향을 줄 수 있는 다양한 요소들을 함께 살펴보았다. 그 결과 발화 말 휴지 길이가 발화 내 휴지 길이보다 약 160 ms 이상 더 긴 것을 확인하였다. 이는 휴지가 운율적 정규성을 가지며, 발화 말 휴지는 발화의 종결을 신호하는 역할을 체계적으로 수행한다는 것을 의미한다. 자유 발화는 낭독 발화보다 더 긴 휴지가 더 자주 나타나는 것을 확인하였다. 낭독 발화에서는 화자의 즉각적이고 적극적인 발화 계획이 요구되기 때문이다. 성별의 경우 전반적으로 남성은 여성보다 길고 빈번한 휴지를 보였다. 특히 들숨 동반 휴지는 남성이 여성보다 길었다. 세대의 경우 장년층이 청년층보다 더 자주 휴지를 산출했다. 이 밖에도 변수 간 상호 작용 효과가 관찰되었다. 휴지 길이의 성별 차이에 따르면 남성이 여성보다 휴지 길이가 긴데, 이는 특히 발화 말 휴지에서 두드러졌다.

This study investigates pause positions of Korean students' reading of an English script. 12 natives speakers of English and 18 Korean students were asked to read The North Wind and the Sun. The common pause positions were determined by examining the pauses of the native speakers' readings. Korean students were asked to mark pauses on a script. And then they were trained to put pauses as native speakers of English do. Although some errors have been corrected after the training, others have not been corrected in Korean students' readings. Korean students made fewer errors in marking on the script than in reading the script. They seem to know where to put pauses, but lack of practice makes it difficult to put pause in the right positions when they read. That suggests that teachers should continue to teach students where to put pauses in their reading or speaking English.

Prolactin is considered to influence the taking of pauses in between ovulatory sequences in White Leghorn hens. Therefore modulating concentrations of prolactin using bromocriptine - a dopamine agonist during early life (17 to 36 weeks of age) could overcome the inhibitory effects of high concentration of prolactin on ovarian activity. The effect of modulation of prolactin concentration on egg production, sequence length and inter sequence pauses were studied by analyzing the oviposition records from 19 to 72 weeks were studied and compared with untreated controls. Bromocriptine administered subcutaneously (100 $\mu$g kg$^{-1}$ body weight or orally through feed (640 $\mu$g day$^{-1}$ bird$^{-1}$) resulted in a steady and sustained decrease in prolactin levels (p<0.01) during and after the withdrawal of treatment up to one reproductive cycle (72 weeks of age). The treated birds had comparatively longer sequences (p<0.01) and fewer pauses (p<0.01). Egg production increased (p<0.01) by fourteen per cent through subcutaneous administration and eleven per cent through oral feeding, over the control birds. It is concluded that the physiological pauses that occur during ovulatory sequences can be disrupted effectively using bromocriptine. Prolactin levels are modulated which may interfere with the follicular recruitment and subsequent oviposition thereby improve egg laying potential of the bird.

본 연구는 정상군과 음성장애 환자군의 문단낭독 시 휴지 및 호흡단락 특성을 파악해보고자 시행되었다. 정상군 40명과 기능적 음성장애 환자군 40명을 대상으로 PAS(Phonatory Aerodynamic System) 중 Running Speech를 이용하여 '가을' 문단을 낭독하게 하였다. 이를 통해 흡기 동반 및 미동반, 어절간 및 어절내 휴지와 호흡단락을 구분하고 이에 대한 기술통계 및 집단간 통계적 유의성을 검증하였다. 그 결과 흡기를 동반한 휴지횟수는 환자군이 더 높았으나 흡기를 동반하지 않은 휴지횟수는 정상군이 더 높은 수치를 보였다. 어절경계 중 휴지가 동반된 비율은 환자군이 더 높았고 호흡단락당 음절수는 정상군이 유의하게 더 높았다. 음성장애 화자군은 성대폐쇄부전으로 인한 호흡지지가 정상군보다 부족하므로 휴지 시 흡기를 동반하는 경우나 호흡단락의 수가 더 많은 것으로 사료된다. 이는 일상대화의 자연스러움을 저해할 수 있으므로 음성장애 화자의 중재 시 휴지와 호흡단락의 빈도를 적절히 조절하는 것도 평가 및 중재에 포함해야 할 것이다.

This paper investigates any possible correlation between the information structure and the occurrence of clause internal pauses in the spontaneous discourse. One of the possible functions of pause is its capacity to signal the information structure of the discourse. However, this aspect was not much explored in Korean spontaneous speech. In the present study, information structure of spontaneous speech was defined for each word or word group on the basis of the information structure analysis model proposed by Van Donzel (1999) and Roulet (1991, 1997). Thus, at a local level (words or word groups) of discourse structure, a distinction was made between three types of information, new, given and inferable. The results showed that clause internal pauses tend to appear more frequently before new information than other types of information. However compared to the total number of words or word groups it was not noticed any specific ordering concerning different kind of information status and pausing. It was however found that clause internal pauses did not appear randomly. The majority of them occurred at the initial part of the clause or the sentence. This tendency was mostly related to the division of sentence (or clause) into topic and comment. Thus, the role of pauses as a marker of information structure seems to be less effective in spontaneous discourse.

본 연구는 다문화가정 베트남과 필리핀 이주여성의 발화속도와 쉼 특성에 대한 음향학적인 분석을 통하여 이주여성 대상 한국어교육 프로그램 개발의 기초자료를 제공하고자 하였다. 이주여성은 한국여성에 비해 느린 발화속도, 긴 쉼 지속시간과 높은 쉼 빈도를 나타냈다. 베트남집단보다 상대적으로 한국 거주기간이 긴 필리핀집단은 한국집단에 보다 가까운 특성을 보였다. 이주여성의 발화속도가 느리게 나타난 것은 조음속도가 느리고 거의 어절마다 쉼을 두고 읽는 습관에 기인한 것으로 보인다.

체홉 의 희곡들을 읽을 때 간과 할 수 없는 점이 대사의 중간 중간에 포진 되어 있는 "사이"와 말줄임표의 존재이다. 체홉 의 작품을 연출할 때 수많은 양의 "사이"와 말줄임표 에 어떤 의미를 부연하고 표현해 낼 수 있을까 는 체홉의 작품을 보다 체홉 처럼 보이게 하는 결정적인 요소가 아닐까 생각한다. 배우들은 그들의 연기 속에 "사이"와 말줄임표를 어떻게 녹여내어 표현 할 것인가를 고민해야 한다. 먼저 "사이"와 말줄임표의 적절한 사용은 등장인물의 특징을 확정 짓는데 도움이 될 것이다. 다시 말해서, 개인에 관한 흥미를 집중적으로 표현하는 것이 체홉 극작의 근간을 이루고 있고 적어도 체홉 드라마 속의 침묵은 액션이 상대적으로 부족하다고 여겨지는 체홉의 극을 음악적 역동성을 가진 하나의 전혀 다른 연극텍스트, 즉 정교하게 다루어 져야할 연출적, 연기적 재료로서의 기능을 갖는다 하겠다.
