Although patents have mainly been considered as the results of the invention process, of late their value as strategic assets have increasingly been emphasized. Consequently, the competition for patents among firms has intensified, and the number of patent disputes have been steadily increasing. Patent disputes, which cause enormous expense and resource utilization, increase uncertainty and have been considered as a threat or problem for the firms involved. Patent disputes are expected to have a significant impact on the decision making about subsequent innovation activities. This study attempts to analyze the effect of patent disputes on the subsequent innovative activities of the firms that are sued. After experiencing litigation as defendants, we examine their subsequent patenting strategies. According to the results of the study, firms who are experiencing patent litigation are more likely to achieve high-quality patents and cite recent technology when they apply for patents. Meanwhile, patent litigation experience has been shown to negatively affect the amount of subsequent patents applied. This study increases understanding by examining whether patent disputes, which have been mainly recognized negatively as obstacles, can be an opportunity that comes during a crisis.

A Patent Pool tends to be activated to establish the harmonization in recently standardization activities related to information and telecommunications with patent rights. Recent main examples of patent pool related to telecommunications standardization are concentrated in this paper. We seem to examine the practical meanings of patent pool from review the examples of utilizing patent pool. Those examples are analyzed and presented in this paper as typical construction cases of patent pool by characteristic of formation : The MPEG-2 patent pool which has become a pioneering precedence being managed by establishing MPEG LA as professional and administrative entity having organizied scalef; DVD patent pool which is a type of dividied case of a patent pool; the patent pool of IEEE1394 which was formed by surronding technology market effect outside the entrepreneur; finally the UMTS case in mobile telecommunications area.
As intellectual property has become an important competitive element in the industry, government-led patent education is rapidly expanding. It is important to look at whether each patent education course is organically linked to each other under a life-long patent education system from elementary school to college. This study focused on the link between high school education and college education to analyze statistically how invention activities in high school affect patent education achievement at college. Statistical analysis of a survey of students taking a basic course of intellectual property revealed no statistically significant correlation between invention experience in high school and college students' patent class total score, contrary to popular perception. These results are believed to be due to the distribution of data on the number of invention contest participations or the number of invention class participations, which does not form a normal distribution and has a relatively large skewness. Rather, the attendance to the patent class showed a relatively distinct positive linear correlation with the patent class total score, indicating that the student's attitude in class was important for the patent education achievement.

Patent management activities are considered to play a key role for technology-based firms under the recent knowledge-based economies. This is because intellectual property, including patents, can act as a system for continuous profit generation by protecting firms' products, processes and services. In Korea, healthcare industry is now regarded as one of the promising next generation industries. Despite the promise of healthcare industry, Korean healthcare product manufacturers are faced with turbulent business changes, such as market opening. Even though there are various industrial studies on the effect of patent management activities on firm outcome, previous studies have hardly paid attention to Korean healthcare product manufacturing firms. For this reason, this study identifies the effect of patent management activities, such as patenting activeness, technical excellence and cooperation degree, on firm outcomes, including financial profitability and firm growth, with respect to the Korean healthcare product manufacturers. In this study, we located 86 Korean healthcare manufacturing firms from KORCHAMBIZ and DART, and then collected the data of their patenting activities and outcomes between 2001 and 2013. By applying factor analysis and regression analysis, our empirical study found that firms' patenting activeness has the significant positive relationship on firms' financial profitability, and firms' patenting activeness and technical excellence have the significant positive relationship on firms' financial growth. Our study is an initial attempt to identify the effect of patent management activities on firm outcome within Korean healthcare product manufacturing industry, and thus its results can be used as the basis to formulate national policies for Korean healthcare product industry.

This study is about the impact of a technology-based start-ups' patent-related activities on early stage company performance. Technology-based start-ups are closely related to the intellectual property rights, particularly patents that they aim the pursuit of new products or production methods and pioneer the introduction of market based on innovative technology, and that is a key role in such companies established and operating, hence the research of patent-related activities in technology-based start-ups has important implications. In most previous studies, the impact of the company's patent related activities on the performance of corporate management is determined by using quantitative patent indicators. Therefore, through this study, causal relationships leading to business performance through the development of new products, which includes technology performance and product performance, and the patent-related activities including the company's patented technology support activities, creating the right activities, infringement response activities, base activities validated as follows. First, the patent-related activities have a positive impact on technological and products achievements. In other words, the various activities involved in the acquisition and utilization of the patent have a positive impact on the performance of company's new product development, particularly developing new technologies or patent acquisition rate. Second, the technology have a positive impact on the performance of the products, not on the business performance. However, the empirical results shows that it has indirectly impacts on business performance through the product performance. Third, product performance have a positive impact on business performance. In conclusion, patent-related activities affects the performance of the company's management, and the maintenance of the company's business performance depends on the developing and selling product based on the customers needs, besides the technology performance such as the patents and the development of technology.
In the knowledge-based economy, firms are increasingly exploiting their intellectual properties, especially patents. However, firms usually fail to commercialize all of their patents and some of them are not used even for strategic purposes. Therefore managing sleeping patents constitutes one important aspect of firms' overall patent strategies. This paper considers market uncertainty, technology uncertainty and strategic uncertainty as the reasons for sleeping patents. We analyze how firms' patent-related activities can reduce sleeping patent ratios. The firms' activities examined in here are patent audit, preliminary evaluation, prior art and cooperation. Noticing the prevalence of sleeping patents, this paper contributes by providing insights into how firm's activities affect the sleeping patent ratios. Insights for practitioners and policy makers have been provided from the empirical results.
This paper explores multi-technology capabilities between Korea and Taiwan by analyzing the pattern of inventive activities concerning technology fusion by using patent bibliometrics. Although two countries exhibit a similar level of invention activities and high degree of specialization in emerging technologies measured by the number and technological fields of their US patents, innovation systems in two countries differ. MTCs (multi-technology corporations) are stronger in Korea national innovation system while small innovative firms play important roles in Taiwan national innovation system. Technology fusion has been an important source of technological innovation and it suggests possible advantage for the Korean innovation system because it is a common belief that global size firms - most of them are multi-technology corporations - can perform better in multi-technology fusion and scientific research. The result of patent bibliometrics suggests rather complex answers to the belief Even though Korea shows slight advantage, it may not be ascribed to the large MTCs.
Companies are actively engaged in various innovation activities and intellectual property rights activities such as patents in order to survive in a fiercely competitive global environment. The purpose of this study is to understand the factors that influence corporate patent-related activities on business results. For this reason, we conducted a questionnaire survey of patent practitioners and R & D personnel of Chinese companies, and analyzed the causal relationship using PLS analysis tools. As a result of the analysis, it was found that compensation and obstacle factors have a significant effect on information sharing (collaboration)... It was found that information sharing (collaboration) has a significant impact on technology complementation (improvement) and corporate image. It was also found that technical complementation (improvement) and corporate image have an impact on management results. The results of this study will be able to find and strategically utilize the factors that promote and encourage companies to develop their patent activities.

Amid rapid changes in technological innovation due to the influence of the 4th Industrial Revolution and COVID-19, research related to absorption capacity and patent activities to promote technological innovation of Korean technology start-ups is important in this uncertain environment. This study aims to examine the effects on entrepreneurial performance and patent activities by reconstructing absorptive capacity, an organizational capability, for technology-based startups in fields such as BT and ICT with less than seven years of establishment, distinguishing between potential absorptive capacity and realized absorptive capacity. The study also seeks to develop a theoretical research model. To accomplish this, data was collected from managerial executives, including CEOs of 215 technology startups. The following hypotheses were tested: Firstly, potential absorptive capacity had a significant impact on patent activities, while realized absorptive capacity did not. Secondly, potential absorptive capacity had a significant impact on technological performance, while realized absorptive capacity did not. Thirdly, both potential and realized absorptive capacity had a significant impact on financial and non-financial performance. Fourthly, patent activities indirectly influenced potential absorptive capacity and technological performance, but did not affect realized absorptive capacity. Fifthly, patent activities indirectly influenced potential absorptive capacity and financial performance, but did not affect realized absorptive capacity. Lastly, patent activities indirectly influenced potential absorptive capacity and non-financial performance, but did not affect realized absorptive capacity. The practical significance of this study lies in providing useful guidelines for building the core capabilities of organizations through absorptive capacity and patent activities. Furthermore, it is expected that startups that have not recognized the formation process of absorptive capacity for patent activities will perceive the formation mechanism of absorptive capability anew and show considerable interest in future potential and realized absorptive capacity as part of their management strategies. This is anticipated to play an important role in adapting to rapidly changing technological advancements, the startup ecosystem, and securing sustainable competitive advantages.

This study is to compare and analyze the technology competitiveness of Big Data sector through patent analysis. According to results of the analysis, the United States is the most active country on the patent activities and its applied and registered patents have multiplied in recent times. However, both CPP(Cited Per Patent) and PII(Patent Impact Index) of the US would have declined, indicating that the growth of technology in the US seems to be biased to quantitative growth of technologies. Korea has been relatively active patent activities with Japan, China and Canada, whereas it has tended to be biased to quantitative growth with the US; Therefore, Korea government needs to concentrate efforts to retain the high quality technologies.
