Remodeling for an aged building is emerging as a potential alternative towards the future of the building industry. It is a more effective method than the new construction in environmental friendly view. Most of remodeling were aimed at the improvement of the function of the deteriorated finishing materials. But, at the early stage of remodeling process, energy performance of a building can be improved by adopting passive design solutions such as daylighting and natural ventilation. The purpose of this study is to explain the passive design strategy in remodeling process and to suggest a application of LT method. LT method is an energy-design tool which responds to parameters available early in design development. It provides an output of annual primary energy for lighting, heating, cooling and ventilation in non-domestic buildings. LT method basically uses the concept of passive zone and non-passive zones and should be used to evaluate the energy performance of a number of options and to make comparisons. In this paper, the process of LT method is introduced and investigated an applicability in our office building.
The paper deals with comparative study of various surrogate models based approximate optimization in the structural design of the passive type deck support frame under design load conditions. The passive type deck support frame was devised to facilitate both transportation and installation of 20,000 ton class topside. Structural analysis was performed using the finite element method to evaluate the strength performance of the passive type deck support frame in its initial design stage. In the structural analysis, the strength performances were evaluated for various design load conditions. The optimum design problem based on surrogate model was formulated such that thickness sizing variables of main structure members were determined by minimizing the weight of the passive type deck support frame subject to the strength performance constraints. The surrogate models used in the approximate optimization were response surface method, Kriging model, and Chebyshev orthogonal polynomials. In the context of numerical performances, the solution results from approximate optimization were compared to actual non-approximate optimization. The response surface method among the surrogate models used in the approximate optimization showed the most appropriate optimum design results for the structure design of the passive type deck support frame.

In this study, a simple method of calculating the passive earth pressure coefficient, which is based on the limit equilibrium method, was proposed and the calculated earth pressure coefficients were compared with those of several researchers. The angle of the linear failure surface, which is combined with the logarithmic spiral arc, to the failure surfaces of the passive zone was derived and the whole passive thrust acting on the Rankine passive zone was considered in the proposed method instead of considering the horizontal component of passive thrust. The variations of the passive earth pressure coefficients of the proposed method showed the same tendency as that of the Coulomb's passive earth pressure coefficients with an inclined angle of backfill and internal friction angle. The magnitude of passive earth pressure coefficients of the proposed method were smaller than those of the Coulomb in almost all cases. A comparison of the passive earth pressure coefficients with the wall friction angle revealed the passive earth pressure coefficients of the proposed method to be smaller than those of the Coulomb and the differences between the two values increased with increasing internal friction angle and wall friction angle. A comparison of the passive earth pressure coefficients of the proposed method with those of the existing researchers for the considered internal friction angles of $25^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, $35^{\circ}$, and $40^{\circ}$ and three wall friction angles revealed the maximum percentage differences for the Kerisel and Absi method, Soubra method, Lancellotta method, $Ant\tilde{a}o$ et al. method, Kame method, and Reddy et al. method to be 4.8%, 3.8%, 31.1%, 4.0%, 20.6%, and 12.8% respectively. The passive earth pressure coefficient and existing pressures were similar in all cases.
Soil strength and failure surface geometry directly influence magnitudes of passive earth thrust acting on geotechnical retaining structures. Accordingly, it is expected that as long as the shape of the failure surface geometry and strength parameters of the backfill are known, magnitudes of computed passive earth thrusts should be highly accurate. Building on this premise, this study adopts conventional method of slices for calculating passive earth thrust and combines it with equations for estimating failure surface geometries based on in-situ stress state and density. Accuracy of the proposed method is checked using the results obtained from small-scale physical retaining wall model tests. In these model tests, backfill was prepared using either air pluviation or compaction and different backfill relative densities were used in each test. When the calculated passive earth thrust magnitudes were compared with the measured values, it was noticed that the results were highly compatible for the tests with pluviated backfills. On the other hand, calculated thrust magnitudes significantly underestimated the measured thrust magnitudes for those tests with compacted backfills. Based on this observation, a new approach for the calculation of passive earth pressures is developed. The proposed approach calculates the magnitude and considers the influence of locked-in stresses that are the by-products of the backfill preparation method in the computation of lateral earth forces. Finally, recommendations are given for any geotechnical application involving the compaction of granular bodies that are equally applicable to physical modelling studies and field construction problems.

In this paper, an efficient piezoelectric passive damper is newly devised to suppress the multi-mode vibration of plates. To construct the passive damper, the piezoelectric materials are utilized as energy transformer, which can transform the mechanical energy to electrical energy. To dissipate the electrical energy transformed from mechanical energy, multiple resonant shunted piezoelectric circuits are applied. The dynamic governing equations of a coupled electro-mechanical piezoelectric with multiple piezoelectric patches and multiple resonant shunted circuits is derived and solved for the one edge clamped plate. The equations of motion of the piezoelectrics and shunted circuits as well as the plate are discretized by finite element method to estimate more exactly the effectiveness of the piezoelectric passive damper. The method to find the optimal location of a piezoelectric is presented to maximize effectiveness for desired modes. The electro-mechanical coupling term becomes important parameter to select the optimal location.
This paper presents a method for harmonic elimination and reactive power compensation using an intervening firing method and passive power filter with is suitable to compensate rapidly changing loads and reactive power. The proliferation of three-phase thyristor phase-controlled converter of DC motor drives into a power system has the potential to increase the harmonic levels in the power system. The design procedure of an intervening firing method and passive power filter capable of reducing the voltage and current harmonics produced by converter supplied from a source having internal large inductive impedance is offered. The analysis uses the or CAD PSpice to model three-phase thyristor phase-controlled converter of DC motor drives as well as the system.
Passive ranging is a critical part of machine vision measurement. Most of passive ranging methods based on machine vision use binocular technology which need strict hardware conditions and lack of universality. To measure the distance of an object placed on horizontal plane, we present a passive ranging method based on monocular vision system by smartphone. Experimental results show that given the same abscissas, the ordinatesis of the image points linearly related to their actual imaging angles. According to this principle, we first establish a depth extraction model by assuming a linear function and substituting the actual imaging angles and ordinates of the special conjugate points into the linear function. The vertical distance of the target object to the optical axis is then calculated according to imaging principle of camera, and the passive ranging can be derived by depth and vertical distance to the optical axis of target object. Experimental results show that ranging by this method has a higher accuracy compare with others based on binocular vision system. The mean relative error of the depth measurement is 0.937% when the distance is within 3 m. When it is 3-10 m, the mean relative error is 1.71%. Compared with other methods based on monocular vision system, the method does not need to calibrate before ranging and avoids the error caused by data fitting.
An analysis on a passive current sharing characteristics of a multi-phase synchronous buck converter is presented. The passive current sharing method is simple but its characteristics depend on the converter equivalent resistance and PWM uniformity. In this paper, the load sharing and power consumption of the passive current sharing system for the converter equivalent resistance and duty ratio inequalities are investigated through the simulation and experiment.
Purpose: The definition and factors of passive design being the sustainable method of building plan through the preceding research is deducted and the effect of passive design within the public library by applying the deducted factors in the case of built public libraries and further the realization plan of green library aimed to be reviewed in this research. Method: This study is to induce common elements of architecture plan for public library and passive design, and assess application level of re-classified elements of sustainable public library in order to analyze present condition of passive design applied on facilities of public library. First, related laws and planning standards of public library will be reviewed, then the definition of passive design will be considered using advanced research. Through advanced research related to planing elements and passive design for library induced from various plans for library standards, a common ground of induced passive design element will be transformed into assessment items and practices to be analyzed. Result: Libraries which are and are not preliminarily certified by G-SEED will be compared with each other in order to analyze the effects of passive design on G-SEED. Even though various passive elements such as load reduction of air conditioning and energy efficiency exist, there are no assessment tool within G-SEED. The fact that there are only standards for temporary methods such as utilization of construction material and installation of equipment highlights the challenges in quantitative evaluation.

The passive surface wave method measures seismic signals from ambient noises or vibrations of natural phenomena without using an artificial source. Since passive sources are usually in lower frequencies than artificial ones being able to ensure the information on deeper geological structures, the passive surface wave method can investigate deeper geological structures. In the passive method, frequency dispersion curves are obtained after data acquisition, and the dispersion curves are analyzed by assuming 1D-layered earth, which is like the method of active surface wave survey. However, when computing dispersion curves, the passive method first obtains and analyzes coherence curves of received signals from a set of receivers based on spatial autocorrelation. In this review, we explain how passive surface wave methods measure signals, and make data processing and interpretation, before analyzing field application cases.
