  • In order to understand the flow and filtration characteristics in a wall-flow type DPF(Diesel Particulate Filter), 0-D, 1-D, and 3-D simulations are preformed. In this paper, three model are explained and validated with each other. Based on the comparisons with 1-D and 3-D results for the steady state solution, 3-D CFD analysis is preferable to 1-D for the prediction of wall velocity at the inlet and exit plane. Because PM loading process is transient state phenomena, the combination of full 3-D and time dependent simulation is crucial for the configuration of wall channels.   • The number of vehicles employing diesel engines is rapidly rising. Accompanying this trend, application of an after-treatment system is strictly required as a result of reinforced exhaust regulations. The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) system is considered as the most efficient method to reduce particulate matter (PM), but the improvement of a regeneration performance at any engine operation point presents a considerable challenge by itself. Temperature, gas compostion and flow rate of exhaust gas are important parameters in DPF evaluation, especially regeneration process. Engine dynamometer and degment tester are generally used in DPF evaluation so far. But these test method couldn't reveal the effect of various parameters on real DPF, such as O2 concentration, amount of soot and exhaust gas temperature. This research has studied the possibility using dump combustor that used to take an approach lean premixed combustion in gas turbine for a DPF power and optimized. It is possible that utilize the system as DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst) and SCR(Selective Catalytic Reduction) assessments test as well as DPF evaluation

입자강화 복합재료의 파괴인성에 관한 프랙탈 해석 (Fractal analysis on fracture toughness of particulate composites)

  • A fractal analysis on fracture surface of aluminium-particulate SiC composites was attempted. As the volume fraction of SiC in composites increases, the fractal dimension tends to increase. However, no correlation between the fractal dimension and the fracture toughness in terms of critical energy release rate was observed. Since the fractal dimension represents the roughness of fracture surface, the fracture toughness would be a function of not only fracture surface roughness but also additional parameters. Thus the applicability of fractal analysis to the estimation of fracture toughness must depend on the proper choice and interpretation of additioal paramerters. In this paper, the size of characteristic strctural unit for fracture was considered as an additional parameter. As a result, the size appeared to be a function of only volume fraction of SiC. Finally, a master curve for fracture toughness of aluminium-particulate SiC composites was proposed as a function of fractal dimension and volume fraction of SiC.

  • We designed the hot wind tunnel to reproduce the conditions of utility boiler and carried out its performance test, in order to investigate the particulate two-phase flow behaviour, the fouling and heat transfer characteristics to the heat exchanger. The hot wind tunnel introduces the control system to control the temperature in the test section. The particle is injected into the hot gas stream. The fouling probe (cylindrical tube) is positioned normal to the particulate gas-particle two-phase flow and cooled by the air. The temperature of gas and cooling air, and temperature in the fouling probe are measured as a function of time, giving the local and averaged heat transfer and fouling factor. The shape of particulate deposition adhered to the fouling probe is also observed.

경안천의 오염현황 (Status of Water Pollution of Gyeongan River, Korea)

  • At five stations in Gyeongan River, a tributary of Lake Paldang, physicochemical and biological environmental factors of water, particulate matters, and sediments were investigated biweekly from April 11 to December 22 in 2001. The studied area was characterized as a stream-lake system. The system is primarily referred to a place where the environmental factors had considerably changed depending on the amount of precipitation. As a result, the river turned out to be strongly eutrophicated. Also, some characteristics of the water and the particulate matters at midstream such as average concentrations of conductivity, nutrients, and chlorophyll $\alpha$ were higher than the characteristics of up and down-stream. However, the concentrations of organic matters and ratio of clay and silt of the midstream were determined to be higher than up and down-stream sediments. As the result of the factor analysis, 4 major different patterns for environmental factors are found from samples of water, particulate matters, and sediments.

부유선별법에 의한 폐수 함유 입자성 유기 물질 처리에 대한 기초 연구 (Fundamental Studies on the Treatment of Particulate Organic Substances Contained in Wastewater by Flotation)

  • Basic studies for the treatment of particulate organic substances contained in wastewater by flotation have been conducted. Four kinds of plastics were chosen as the possibly existing organic particles in wastewater and the Zisman plots for these substances were constructed by measuring the contact angle of liquids on their surfaces. The critical surface tensions for these organic substances were estimated based on the constructed Zisman plot and the floatability of organic substances were regarded to be related with their molecular structure. The existence of dissolved organic substances such as a surfactant was observed to affect the extent of flotation of particulate organics. In addition, the consideration of work of adhesion was thought to be better than adopting the critical surface tension as the analytical basis in the operational design of flotation process of organic particles.

  • We designed and developed the burner which would be adapted on the burner type diesel particulate trap system. The burner type particulate trap system consists of burner system to regenerate to ceramic filter, ceramic filter canister, system controller and etc. Many design factors which affect the performance of the burner system were discussed. We also investigated burner characteristics according to the operating parameters. Burned gas temperature could be controlled better by the 2nd air flow rate than the 1st one. As the space velocity increases, the axial and radial temperature gradients in the filter decreases.

광역논에서의 용존성과 입자성 영양물질의 거동 특성 (Behavior of the Dissolved and Particulate Nutrient at Paddy Field Area)

  • Nutrients behavior were investigated at a paddy fields area(Soro-ri) with large-scaled plots on loam soil during irrigation seasons of $2001\~2003$. The average concentration of TN, TDN and TDP in drainage water was higher than that in irrigation water. On the other hand, the average concentration TP in irrigation water was higher than in drainage water. The ratio of TDN to TN accounted (or over $90\%$ and the ratio of TDP to TP accounted for $50\~70\%$. Especially the ratio of TDP to TP in drainage water was higher than that in irrigation water, suggesting that much of particulate component was reduced due to sedimentation and adsorption in paddy fields plots. Overall, particulate phosphorus usually account for 44 to $77\%$ of tile total phosphorus during storm events.

  • The main purpose of this study lies on the development of micro dilution tunnel based on the Sierra Dilution chamber model. As a primary examination, characteristics of flow and temperature distributions during the steady dilution process in dilution chamber are observed with numerical analysis. The penetration of dilution air through porous tube as well as wall temperature and temperature gradient inside porous tube are examined. The thermophoretic velocity in terms of temperature behavior inside porous tube are defined and examined. Based on the ratio of penetration and thermophoretic velocities, all part of porous tube are shown to be safe from the particulate depositions. However, The inlet portion of porous tube in addition to the portion of impinging of dilution air are marginally safe from the particulate depositions. Generally the safer design against particulate deposition is required in provision f3r steady dilution process and for transient process as well.

  • A mathematical model for wall-flow monolith ceramic diesel particulate filter was developed in order to describe the processes which take place in the filter during regeneration. The major output of the model comprises ceramic wall temperature and regeneration time(soot reduction). Various numerical tests were performed to demonstrate how the gas oxygen concentration, flow rate and the initial particulate trap loading affect the regeneration time and peak trap temperature. The model is shown to b in reasonable agreement with the published experimental results. This model can be applied to predict the thermal shock failure due to high temperature during combustion regeneration process.
