Deposited road particles (DRPs) were analysed for heavy metal concentrations at four different roads in a city, Korea. The samples were collected using a roadway surface vacuum cleaning vehicle which was commonly used in collecting roadway surface particles. Six particle size ranges were analyzed separately for twelve heavy metal elements (Cd, Cr, Pb, Ni, Al, As, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn and Hg). At all sampling sites, the high concentration of the heavy metals occurred in the <74um particle size range, which conventional roadway cleaning vehicles do not remove efficiently. The Pb concentration significantly increased with decreasing particle size of DRPs, and other toxic heavy metals (Cd, Cr and Ni) also showed similar results. The heavy metal concentrations in the smaller size fraction of DRPs is important because they are contaminants that are preferentially transported by road runoff during rainfall.
Typical size distribution of emission particulates is bi-modal in shape with particles in the fine mode (< 2.0 $\mu\textrm{m}$) and the coarse mode. An experimental study of pressure drop across the industrial gas cleaning filters has been conducted using particle mixture of fine alumina and coarse Arizona dusts with a rotating aerosol disperser to generate the bi-modal test aerosol. Pressure drop increased linearly with increasing mass loading. The pressure drop was found to be strongly dependent upon the mass ratio of fine to coarse particles. The smaller the mass ratio of fine to coarse particles and the higher face velocity are, the faster pressure drop rises. The fine particles and the greater inertia of the particle moving fast would cause a denser cake formation on the filter surface, resulting in a greater specific resistance to the gas flow.
60% Pt on Vulcan XC-72 with similar Pt sizes to fuel cell grade Pt black was investigated by $\^$13/C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), cyclic voltammery (CV), transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Experiments were carried out on electrochemically cleaned samples as well as as-received. The TEM and CV results showed that the average particle sizes were changed by cleaning. However, the chemical shift ($\delta$$\_$G/) of $\^$13/C of $\^$13/CO absorbed on Pt surfaces did not show any appreciable variation with particle size change as did in Pt black. These results indicate that a combination of different analytic techniques is essential to understand the properties of the metal particle catalysts and that the presence of carbon black support strongly influences the NMR data, probably through metal-support interaction.

There was no significant difference in the CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) between physical aerosols, NaCl and smoke, and biological aerosols, airborne MS2 virus and P. fluorescens, which implicate that the hybrid-type of air purifier, applying the unipolar ion emission and the radiant catalytic ionization, imposed identical reduction effect on both physical aerosol and bioaerosol. Ventilation decreases the efficiency of air cleaning by unipolar ionization because high ventilation diminishes the particle concentration reduction effect. The particle removal efficiency decreases with increase in the chamber volume because of the augmented ion diffusion and higher ion wall loss rate. Particle size affects the efficiency of air ionization. The efficiency is high for particles with very small diameter because reduction of charge increases with particle size. If there is no increasing supply of ions, the efficiency of air cleaning by unipolar ionization increases with respect to initial concentration of particles because of the large space charge effect at high particle concentration and amplified electric field.
Among a variety of cleaning processes, the cryogenic carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) cleaning has merits because it is highly efficient in removing very fine particles, innoxious to humans and does not produce residuals after the cleaning, which enables us to extend its area of coverage in the semi-conductor fabrication society. However, the cryogenic carbon dioxide cleaning method has some technical research issues in aspect to particles' adhesion and removal. To resolve these issues, performing an analysis for the identification of particle adhesion mechanism is needed. In this study, a research was performed by a theoretical approach. To this end, we extended the G-T (Greenwood-Tripp) model by applying the JKR (Johnson-Kendall-Roberts) and Lennard-Jones potential theories and the statistical characteristics of rough surface to investigate and identify the contact, adhesion and deformation mechanisms of soft or hard particles on the rough substrate. The statistical characteristics of the rough surface were taken into account through the employment of the normal probability distribution function of the asperity peaks on the substrate surface. The effects of surface roughness on the pull-off force for these particles were examined and discussed.

The remnant of temporary cement on the intaglio surface of cast restoration may have a negative effect on the retentive strength of permanent cement. This study was to evaluate the effect of temporary cement cleaning methods on the retentive strength of cementation type implant prostheses. Prefabricated implant abutments - height 5.5mm, diameter 4.5mm, 6 degree axial wall taper with chamfer margins were used. Forty copings-abutment specimens were divided into four groups(each n=10) according to the cleaning methods for temporary cement(Temp-$Bond^{(R)}$) as follows : no temporary cementation(the control group), orange solvent, ultrasonic cleaning, air borne-particle abrasion. After the application of temporary cement and the separation, the cleaning procedure was performed according to the protocol of each group. The specimens were cemented with $Premier^{(R)}$ Implant $Cement^{TM}$. After the permanent cementation, the specimens were subjected to thermocycling and pulled out from the specimens with a universal testing machine at a cross-head speed of 0.5mm/min. After the retentive strength test, all the specimens were cleaned using ultrasonic cleaning, abraded with air borne-particles, and steam-cleaned. Likewise, the specimens were temporarily cemented(Temp-$Bond^{(R)}$ NE), cleaned according to the protocol of each group, cemented with $Premier^{(R)}$ Implant $Cement^{TM}$ and subjected to thermocycling and measurement of their retentive strength. The mean of group with orange solvent were significantly lower than those of other groups(p<0.05). There was no significance between group with ultrasonic cleaning and group with air borne-particle abrasion. Group with ultrasonic cleaning and group with air-particle abrasion were no significance at control group. There was no significance between group cemented with Temp-$Bond^{(R)}$ and group cemented with Temp-$Bond^{(R)}$ NE. Within the limitation of this study, it can be concluded that the temporary cement cleaning method with only orange solvent may have a negative effect on the retentive strength of permanent cement. Ultrasonic cleaning and air borne-particle abrasion methods are recommended for the temporary cement cleaning method on cementation type implant prostheses.
Sponge ball cleaning can generate an abrasion effect, which leads to an attractive increasing in both permeate flux and membrane rejection. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of the daily sponge ball cleaning (SBC) on the performance of different UF cross-flow membrane modules integrated with a bioreactor. Two 1"-membrane modules and one 1/2"-membrane module were tested. The parameters measured and controlled are temperature, pH, viscosity, particle size, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total suspended solids (TSS), and permeate flux. The permeate flux could be improved by 60%, for some modules, after 11 days of daily sponge ball cleaning at a transmembrane pressure of 350 kPa and a flow velocity of 4 m/s. Rejection values of all tested modules were improved by 10%. The highest permeate flux of 195 L/㎡.h was achieved using a 1"-membrane module with the aid of its negatively charged membrane material and the daily sponge ball cleaning. In addition, the enhancement in the permeate flux caused by daily sponge ball cleaning improved the energy specific demand for all tested modules. The negatively charged membrane showed the lowest energy specific demand of 1.31 kWh/㎥ in combination with the highest flux, which is a very competitive result.

Copper (Cu) had been attractive material due to its superior properties comparing to other metals such as aluminum or tungsten and considered as the best metal which can replace them as an interconnect metal in integrated circuits. CMP (Chemical Mechanical Polishing) technology enabled the production of excellent local and global planarization of microelectronic materials, which allow high resolution of photolithography process. Cu CMP is a complex removal process performed by chemical reaction and mechanical abrasion, which can make defects of its own such as a scratch, particle and dishing. The abrasive particles remain on the Cu surface, and become contaminations to make device yield and performance deteriorate. To remove the particle, buffing cleaning method used in post-CMP cleaning and buffing is the one of the most effective physical cleaning process. AE(Acoustic Emission) sensor was used to detect dynamic friction during the buffing process. When polishing is started, the sensor starts to be loaded and produces an electrical charge that is directly proportional to the applied force. Cleaning efficiency of Cu surface were measured by FE-SEM and AFM during the buffing process. The experimental result showed that particles removed with buffing process, it is possible to detect the particle removal efficiency through obtained signal by the AE sensor.
In this study, the concentration of fine indoor dust and the size distribution of fine indoor dust were analyzed by measuring the dust generated during the cleaning process of an indoor office. We measured $PM_{10}$, $PM_{2.5}$, and $PM_{1.0}$ and analyzed the size distributions of dust larger than $0.3{\mu}m$ in diameter during cleaning. The results showed that the concentration of $PM_{10}$ increased rapidly during cleaning, however $PM_{1.0}$ did not increase. Before cleaning with a broom, the fine dust concentration was about $50{\mu}g/m^3$, but increased to about $400{\mu}g/m^3$ as cleaning progressed. In the case of indoor cleaning with a vacuum cleaner, the concentration of $PM_{10}$ increased during the cleaning process and the increase of $PM_{2.5}$ was relatively small. $PM_{1.0}$ did not increase as in the case of cleaning the broom.

Cylindrical bag filter system with pulse jet cleaning has been the most common device to control particle laden exhaust gas from the various industrial processes. But, it has many shortcomings due to particle reattachment and frequent bag rupture. In recent years, rectangular type bag filter system has been developed to overcome the problems associated with the cylindrical system. However, not many studies about the rectangular system were not done, compared to the cylindrical system. In this study, the optimum pulse jet cleaning conditions were thus tested by the series of experiments. The factors tested in this study are pulse distance, pulse pressure, pulse duration, the number of holes for pulsing and bag materials. A single bag ($1,500mmL{\times}50mmW{\times}300mmH$) system and a multi-bags (3 bags in a row) were tested separately. The highest removal efficiency with a single bag system was found at the conditions with pulse distance of 10cm, pulse pressure of $3kg/cm^2$, pulse duration of 0.3s, pulse jet number of 6 and Polyester bag. With the multi-bags system, the best cleaning conditions were found at the bag interval of 20cm with the simultaneous pulsing and the bag interval of 15cm with the serial pulsing.
