Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the microleakage of various types of resin-bonded fixed partial dentures (RBFPDs) after artificial aging. Materials and Methods: Forty models with missing first molar were fabricated using artificial resin teeth and were divided into four groups: Group A, conventional RBFPDs design; Group B, modified RBFPDs design; Group C, assembled 3-piece RBFPDs design; and Group D, assembled 3-piece RBFPDs with different occlusal rest positions. Half of the specimens underwent chewing simulation process (240,000 cycles, 50 N load, 1.7 Hz) and thermocycling (temperatures $5^{\circ}C{\sim}55^{\circ}C$, dwelling time 30 seconds) and the remaining 20 specimens didn't receive any treatment. All the specimens were immersed in 2% methylene blue solution for 24 hours to evaluate microleakage, and were sectioned at the middle part of abutment teeth. To evaluate the microleaskage, a dye penetration was calculated. Result: With artificial aging, cyclic loading and thermocycling, a 3-piece RBPFD and a 2-piece RBPFD using original tooth undercuts have significantly lower microleakge (P<0.05) compared to the conventional design of RBPFD and modified RBPFD. Conclusion: Within the limit of this experiment, the assembled RBFPDs exhibited a smaller microleakage than the conventional RBFPDs, implying that the assembled RBFPDs can be more effective for reducing the dislodgement of the RBFPDs.
Many studies have been reported on the successful replacement of missing teeth with osseointegrated dental Implants. However, little research has been carried out on the bio-mechanical aspect of the stress on the surrounding bone of the free-standing type of dental implant prostheses. This experimental study was aimed to analyze the stress distribution pattern on the supporting tissues depending upon the position of osseointegrated implants supporting fixed bridges. In the cases of unilateral partially edentulous mandible (the 2nd premolar and the 1st and 2nd molars missing), two osseointegrated implants were placed at the 2nd premolar and 2nd molar sites (Model A) , the 1st and 2nd molar sites (Model B, Anterior cantilevered type), the 2nd premolar and 1st molar sites (Model C, Posterior cantilevered type). Chewing forces of dentate patients and denture wearer were applied vertically on the 2nd premolar, the 1st molar, and the 2nd molar of each model. A 3-Unit fixed partial denture was constructed at each model and cantilevered extension parts were involved in Model B and Model C. Two dimensional finite element analysis was undertaken. The commercial software (Super SAP) for IBM 16 bit personal computer was utilized. The results were as follows : 1. The magnitude of applied load influenced on the total value of stresses, but did not in-fluence on the pattern of stress distribution. 2. The magnitude of stress developed from the supporting tissues were in order of Model C,Model A,Model B. 3. High stresses were concentrated on the cervical and apical portion of the implant/bone interface. 4. A difference of the stress magnitude on the implant/bone interface between mesial and distal implant was most prominant in Model C and in order of Model A and Model B. 5. The stresses developed in Model A were evenly distributed throughout both implants. 6. The stresses concentrated on the cervical portion of cantilevered side were higher in the posterior cantilevered type than in the anterior cantilevered type.
Purpose: This study set out to propose plans for more efficient and effective clinical practice by investigating the current state of clinical practice in the field of dental technology and thus provide basic data to develop pre- and post-education programs for clinical practice. Methods: The subjects include dental technicians at dental technical laboratories that were appointed as the place of clinical practice by the Department of Dental Technology of G University. The survey period spanned from December 22, 2014 to January 20, 2015. Total 250 questionnaires were distributed to them, and 190(76.0%) were returned. After excluding 23 whose answers were uncertain or seemed to lack reliability, total 167(66.8%) were used in final analysis. Results: 1. The most frequent practice the student did during clinical practice was articulator attachment, which was followed by pin operation or model making, one's own task and practice, sand and crow sculpturing, burying, casting, and grinding. 2. In case of going through the entire process, porcelain had the most students at 39(23.4%), being followed by crown & bridge at 28(16.8%), clinical model at 23(13.8%), full denture at 17(10.2%), and partial denture at 17(10.2%) in the order. 3. Of the students, 59.8%(30.5% for reinforced basic practice; 29.3% for intensive practice education) said that intensive practice education should be reinforced in school; and 22.3% said that intensive theory and practice education was needed, which indicates that 82.6% voiced their opinion of reinforcing education around practice. 4. The students felt that they lacked diligence, passion, and theoretical knowledge somewhat and were relatively good at clinical adaptation and operational skills. Conclusion: The findings show that the students felt an absolute lack of practice education as the school education was focused on theory and national exams in the field of dental technology, thus raising a need to reinforce practice education. Of all the respondents, 62.9% said there was a need to improve the current education with a focus on jobs. In future, education of dental technology should work to bring up able dental technicians that can perform in clinical dental technology right after graduation by reinforcing job-based practice education.

Aspirating or swallowing foreign bodies is a common occurrence. If they are wholly or partly radiopaque, their localization in and progress through the gastrointestinal tract can be more effective. Of the dental origin foreign materials swallowed, the most common things are fragments of anterior maxillary partial denture. But the radiopacity of denture base resins is not sufficient to determine the location of the objects. The purpose of this study was to develop a radiopaque dental acrylic resin, which has clinically detectible radiopacity with minimal change of mechanical properties and color. The radiopacity, color change(CIE 6..E) and microhardness of acrylic resins were determined after mixing barium sulfate or iodide compound. Thermocycling course was conducted to determine the change of characteristic of resins after using for a long time in the mouth. Five or ten percent of barium sulfate to total weight of cured material was mixed with heat curing dental acrylic resin or chemically curing orthodontic resin. In the case of iodide compound, the mixing ratio was two or three percent. After mixing the high radiopaque materials, resin was cured to 20×20×2 mm plate, polished with #600 sand paper and finally polished with Microcloth(Buehler). The specimens were thermocycled in 5 and 55 t distilled water for 2,000 times, and the measurement of radiopacity, color and Vickers hardness was repeated every 500 times thcrmocycling. The radiopacity of specimens on the X -ray films was measured with densitometer(X-rite). The color change was detennined with differential colorimeter(Model TC-6FX, Tokyo Denshoku), and the Vickers hardness number was measured with microhardness tester(Mitsuzawa). The following results were obtained : 1. All the three variables, the kinds of acrylic resins, the mixing or the kinds of high radiopaque materials and thermocycling, had combined effect on the radiopacity of the dental acrylic resins(p<0.0l). 2. The two variables, the mixing or the kinds of high radiopaque materials and thermocycling, influenced on the radiopacity of the dental acrylic resins(p<0.01). But the kinds of acrylic resins did not influence on the color change of mixed dental acrylic resins(p>0.05). 3. Each of the three variables, the kinds of acrylic resins, the mixing or the kinds of high radiopaque materials and thermocycling, influenced on the radiopacity of dental acrylic resins(p<0.0l). 4. The high radiopaque materials used in this study did not yield clinically usable radiopacity, and the color change was great after mixing those materials.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between prosthetic status and health related quality of elderly by using EuroQol-5 dimension (EQ-5D) which is a standardized instrument used as a measure of health outcome. Data from 1,179 elderly subjects (over 65 years old) from the fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were used in our analysis. Oral examination were conducted to obtain wearing prosthetic and needed prosthetic. EQ-5D is a widely used health condition measuring instrument. It consists of the five dimensions: Mobility, Self-care, Usual activities, Pain/discomfort and Anxiety/depression. EQ-5D index is a score calculated out of a weighting system. In this study, the mean score of the EQ-5D index among the elderly was 0.86. For EQ-5D index gender, female showed statistically significantly lower quality of life than male. The related factors EQ-5D index, when the lower demand for fixed prosthodontics and full denture. Wearers in partial and complete denture than non-wearers showed higher EQ-5D index. In order to improve EQ-5D index among the elderly who demand prosthetic status, which has lost its function through providing proper dental prostheses.
Objectives: This study aims to contribute to the prevention of dental diseases and health care in the elderly by investigating the relationship among the experiences of chronic diseases, dental health status, and the behaviors in the Korean elderly people. Methods: A total of 2,856 elderly people aged 65 or older were selected as the final analysis subjects using data from the 6th National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2013-2014). Chronic diseases were defined as 'cardiocerebrovascular diseases', 'diabetes', 'chronic respiratory diseases', and 'cancer' diagnosed by the doctors. For the statistical analysis, SPSS 21.0 for Windows was used. Descriptive analysis and a Chi-square test were conducted to investigate the relationship among the experiences of chronic diseases, general characteristics, dental health status, and the behaviors in the Korean elderly. Finally, logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate the relationship among the experiences of chronic diseases, dental health status, and the behaviors. Results:The prevalence of Cardiocerebrovascular diseases was significantly higher in the 3-4 group of community periodontal index with the score of 1.36 (95% CI 1.03-1.00) than in the 0-2 group. The prevalence of Cardiocerebrovascular diseases was significantly higher in the group without dental examination during the past one year with the score of 1.29 (95% CI 1.00-1.66). The prevalence of diabetes was significantly higher in the uncomfortable speaking state group with the score 1.46 (95% CI 1.12-1.91). The prevalence of cancer was significantly higher in the partial denture needs group with the score 1.67 (95% CI 0.98-2.83). Conclusions: Regular dental examinations and dental health care for the elderly with chronic diseases showed that periodontal health and residual teeth could be maintained and managed. Therefore, continuous customized dental health services should be implemented for the elderly with chronic diseases.
Statement of problem : The joints of removable partial denture alloys have failed frequently after routine usage. Purpose : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the mechanical properties of the laser welded Co-Cr alloys. Material and method : For this study 20 Co-Cr specimens were casted and 10 of them were seperated on the middle area and laser welded with Alpha laser welding machine(Siro Lasertec, Pforzheim, Germany). Rest of them which were as cast, were used as a control group. For the section of the experimental specimens, wire cutting machine was used to make a even gap of the all specimens. Laser welding was done with manufacturer's instrunction and tested each specimen by Instron Machine. Tensile strength, 0.2% yield strength and % elongations were recorded. Fractured surfaces were investigated with SEM. Results : The results were as follows : 1. The tensile strength of the laser welded group(617.7MPa) was about 75% of the as cast group(820.4MPa). It had stastically significant differences(p<0.05). 2. The % elongation of the experimental group was 6.6 which was lower than the control group(14.3). 3. Fracture of the experimental group occured in the welded surface and showed many voids. In contrast, the fracture surface of the control group was showed rough surfaces without any voids. Conclusion : The tensile strengths of the as-cast joints were higher than those for the laser welded joints, and the % elongation of the experimental group was lower than the control group. Porosity was found in laser-welded joints.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the stress distribution of the natural teeth, the implant, the prosthesis and the supporting tissue according to the types of implant and connection modality in the five-unit fixed partial denture with a implant pier abutment. A Two dimensional stress analysis model was constructed to represent a mandible missing the first and second premolars and first molar. The model contained a canine and second molar as abutment teeth and implant pier abutments with and without stress-absorbing element. Finite element models were created and analyzed using software ANSYS 4.4A for IBM 32bit personal computer. The results obtained were as follows. 1. Implant group, compared to the natural teeth group, showed a maximum principal stress at the superior portion of implants and a stress concentration at :he neck and end portion. 2. Maximum principal stress and maximum Von Mises stress were always lower in the case of rigid connection than nonrigid connection. 3. A cylinder type implant with stress absorbing element and screw type implant were generally similar in the stress distribution pattern. 4. A screw type implant, compared to the cylinder type implant, showed a relatively higher stress concentration at both neck and end portion of it. 5. Load B cases showed higher stress concentration on the posterior abutments in the case of nonrigid connector than rigid connector. 6. A maximum displacement was always lower in the case of rigid connection than nonrigid connection. These results suggest that osseointegrated implant can be used as an intermediate abutment.

The radial forearm free flap (RFFF) is a thin and pliable tissue with many advantages for tongue reconstruction. However, tongues reconstructed with RFFF occasionally need revision surgery because inadequate defect measurement at primary surgery can lead to bulkiness and limited movement of reconstructed tongue. In this case, the patient underwent partial glossectomy and RFFF reconstruction for treatment of tongue cancer five years prior. We could not make a lower denture for the patient, because the alveolo-lingual sulcus of tongue was almost lost. So we performed vestibuloplasty with a modified Kazanjian method on the lingual vestibule of the mandibular right posterior area, and defatting surgery to debulk the flap. After surgery, we observed that the color and texture of the revised tongue changed to become similar with adjacent tissue. The patient obtained a more functional and esthetic outcome. Accordingly, we present a case report with a review of relevant literature.

PURPOSE. Adequate passive-fitting of one-piece cast 3-element implant-supported frameworks is hard to achieve. This short communication aims to present an alternative method for section of one-piece cast frameworks and for casting implant-supported frameworks. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Three-unit implant-supported nickel-chromium (Ni-Cr) frameworks were tested for vertical misfit (n = 6). The frameworks were cast as one-piece (Group A) and later transversally sectioned through a diagonal axis (Group B) and compared to frameworks that were cast diagonally separated (Group C). All separated frameworks were laser welded. Only one side of the frameworks was screwed. RESULTS. The results on the tightened side were significantly lower in Group C ($6.43{\pm}3.24{\mu}m$) when compared to Groups A ($16.50{\pm}7.55{\mu}m$) and B ($16.27{\pm}1.71{\mu}m$) ($P$ <.05). On the opposite side, the diagonal section of the one-piece castings for laser welding showed significant improvement in the levels of misfit of the frameworks (Group A, $58.66{\pm}14.30{\mu}m$; Group B, $39.48{\pm}12.03{\mu}m$; Group C, $23.13{\pm}8.24{\mu}m$) ($P$ <.05). CONCLUSION. Casting diagonally sectioned frameworks lowers the misfit levels. Lower misfit levels for the frameworks can be achieved by diagonally sectioning one-piece frameworks.
