The data was collected from 287 elementary school children living in Gyunggido. Measurement scales included the children's school adjustment inventory, the questionnaire of the socio-demographic variables, the parent-child communication index, and the parent's concern about children's education index. Results showed that children's school adjustment was significantly effected with regard to: father's age, father's education, mother's education, income, and mother's job. Correlation analysis indicated that parent-child open communication was positively correlated to children's school adjustment; that is the relationships with teachers and with friends, study at school, and rule of school. As well, parent-child problematic communication was negatively correlated to all of the school adjustment variables. Parent's concern about children's education indicated positive correlations with all of the school adjustment variables. • This research studied the social-emotional competence of children whose primary caregiver was a single-mother or single-father alone compared with children living with a single-parent but the primary caregiver was a non-parent (e.g. a grandparent). Subjects were 208 children (105 boys, 103 girls) from 10 elementary schools in 3 metropolitan cities. Instruments were the Adaptive Behavior Checklist constructed by the researcher, Self-esteem Inventory (Kim, 1987) and Emotional Competence Scale (Kim, 1998). Results showed that children in single-mother families were more social-emotionally competent than children in single-father families. Children whose primary caregivers were non-parents had higher self-esteem than children whose primary caregivers were single parents alone. There were interaction effects of caregiver variables on children's peer relationships and awareness/expression of their own emotion.

  • The grandmother role may be an important support network for dual-earner families and become more saliency among those children who are living with their grandmothers than those who are not. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of family structure characteristics on children's solidarity with their grandmothers and grandmothers' effects on grandchildren's self-esteem. Questionnaire data were collected from 429 grandchildren in the fifth and sixth grades. The major findings showed that (1)Solidarity between grandmother and grandchild in dual-earner families was associated with living arrangement. (2)Children's self-esteem in dual-earner families was not related to living arrangements with their grandmother. (3)Factors predicting solidarity between grandmother and grandchild and the grandchild's self-esteem differed by living arrangement. Solidarity between grandmother and grandchild was explained by grandmother-mother relationships, health of grandmother, parent-children relationship and occupational status of father for children living with their grandmothers. For those children not living with their grandmothers, grandmother-mother relationship, the educational level of father, families' economic level, parent-child relationship and health of the grandmother were significant predictors of grandmother-grandchild solidarity. (4)The regression of predictor variables on self-esteem for children living with grandmother revealed that grandmother-grandchild solidarity was the most powerful predictor, followed by occupational status of father, the educational level of mother, economic status of the family and parent-child relationship. For those children who were not living with grandmothers, parent-child relationship, economic status of the family, grandmother-grandchild solidarity and the educational level of the mother were also significant factors in that order.

  • This study explored the relationships between unmarried adult children and their coresident parents with a focus on the role of intergenerational exchanges and family values affecting parent-child relations. A total of 767 unmarried adult children who lived with their parents were selected from the data of the third National Korean Family Survey in 2015. The main findings were that coresident adult children exchange diverse resources with their parents and that exchange patterns whether receiving more or giving more differed depending on the helping dimensions. 'Receiving' type was more prominent in the dimension of practical help, while, 'receiving and giving' type was more noticeable in the dimension of emotional help. Findings also suggest that intergenerational exchange and family values contribute to parent-child relationship quality. While being an active provider of practical help is positively associated with relationship quality, being a recipient of emotional help is related to a higher level of relationship quality compared to being indifferent. In addition, a stronger value of family responsibility was associated with a higher level of relationship quality. These findings indicate that the importance of the practical and emotional component in the relationships between unmarried adult children and their co-resident parents and reciprocal intergenerational exchange and strong family values may be contributory factors to better parent-child relationships.

  • Recruited from Korean-Chinese preschools and elementary schools in Shenyang and Harbin, China, 150 caregivers of Korean-Chinese children separated from their parents provided general information about the separation(reason and duration of parent-child separation, present location of parents, etc.). They also filled out information about children's responses as to when the children had been separated and about children's behavior problems(Behavior Rating Scale, Behar & Stringfield, 1974). Results showed that most of the children were cared-for by relatives. Caregivers reported that the separated children adjusted positively to parent-child separation and were not anxious about living with a caregiver. There were significant differences in children's behavior problems by duration of separation from mother and frequency of contact between parent and caregiver.
