Korea is a small country with relatively large mountainous areas and has many difficulties from planning to completing one road. Maintaining a completed road presents even more difficulties. presently, in estimating design elements, the result varies according to the engineer and there are many cases that question the reliability of the results. Therefore, in this study, the alignment of highway was sampled using by the centerline path, the design elements of horizontal alignment were reduced by applying the Least Squares Method, and the accuracy was analyzed. By this method, IP, IA, R, $\Delta$R and A-parameter were also determined. By observing relatively long straight sections, the approximate values could be estimated, and particularly, the considerably accurate value of A-parameter was determined. This study, using the Least Squares Method, aims to contribute to the development of the alignment examination in frequent traffic accident regions.

This paper represents the first comprehensive comparison of the Newton-Raphson's method and Simple Iterative Procedure (SIP) in the maximum likelihood estimation of the two-parameter Weibull distribution. Computer simulation is employed to compare these two methods for multiply censored, singly censored data (Type I or Type Ⅱ censoring) and complete data. Results indicate the Newton-Raphson's with the Menon's estimated value, as an initial point remains the effective iterative procedure for estimating the parameters.

For a probabilistic model with positively skewed data, a lognormal distribution is one of the key distributions that play a critical role. Several lognormal models can be found in various areas, such as medical science, engineering, and finance. In this paper, we propose a new estimator for a lognormal mean and depict the performance of the proposed estimator in terms of the relative mean squared error (RMSE) compared with Shen's estimator (Shen et al., 2006), which is considered the best estimator among the existing methods. The proposed estimator includes a tuning parameter. By finding the optimal value of the tuning parameter, we can improve the average performance of the proposed estimator over the typical range of σ2. The bias reduction of the proposed estimator tends to exceed the increased variance, and it results in a smaller RMSE than Shen's estimator. A numerical study reveals that the proposed estimator has performance comparable with Shen's estimator when σ2 is small and exhibits a meaningful decrease in the RMSE under moderate and large σ2 values.
Purpose: CLIMEX, a species distribution modeling tool, includes various types of parameters representing climatic conditions; the estimation of these parameters directly determines the model accuracy. In this study, we investigated the sensitivity of parameters for the climatic suitability calculated by CLIMEX for Metcalfa pruinosa in South Korea. Methods: We first changed 12 parameters and identified the three significant parameters that considerably affected the CLIMEX simulation response. Results: The result indicated that the simulation was highly sensitive to changes in lower optimal temperatures, lower soil moisture thresholds, and cold stress accumulation rate based on the sensitivity index, suggesting that these were the fundamental parameters to be used for fitting the simulation into the actual distribution. Conclusion: Sensitivity analysis is effective for estimating parameter values, and selecting the most important parameters for improving model accuracy.

The major objective of this study is to develop practical methods for estimating sediment yield rates of medium size watersheds of which areas range from 200 to $2,000km^2$ In the first phase of the study that were presented in the companion paper followed by this paper, a methodology for estimating sediment yield rate was introduced and a total of 13 data points including eight sampled river-sediment data and five reservoir deposit data were collected. In this study, a three-parameter empirical model and a six-parameter rating model, both of which are based on empiricism, have been developed. By limited comparisons, the models developed in this study appear to be more reliable and applicable than the existing ones. According to the sediment yield data collected and the estimations by the models, meanwhile, the lowest value for the sediment yield rate of medium size watersheds in Korea is estimated to be about $100tons/km^2/yr$, and the maximum to be about $1,000tons/km^2/yr$.
In this paper we define the probability models for determining the disparity map given stereo images and derive the methods for solving the problem, which is proven to be equivalent to an energy-based stereo matching. Under the assumptions the difference between the pixel on the left image and the corresponding pixel on the right image and the difference between the disparities of the neighboring pixels are exponentially distributed, a recursive approach for estimating the MRF regularizing parameter is proposed. The proposed method alternates between estimating the parameters with the intermediate disparity map and estimating the disparity map with the estimated parameters, after computing it with random initial parameters. Our algorithm is applied to the stereo matching algorithms based on the dynamic programming and belief propagation to verify its operation and measure its performance.
Water quality simulation models include the difference between the measured and estimated values as an inevitable consequence because they represent the complicated natural phenomena as simplified mathematical equations. The major reason of the difference occurrence is due to the use of the imprecise values of the model parameters, but the parameter values are currently determined by the try and error method directly performed by humans. However, the use of this method requires many time and endeavor of humans, and generally does not obtain the most suitable parameter values. A method for deciding model parameter values is, therefore, developed in this study. The method minimizes the difference between the measured and estimated values and also distributes uniformly the measured values on the upper and lower sides of the line representing the estimated values. A user interface based on this method is also developed by using the Visual Basic 6.0 of Microsoft, and it can be operated in the environment of Windows 98/2000. In this study, the method for deciding model parameter values is applied for estimating the water quality of the stream Ko-heung. The results of the application show that the method, including its computer program, can effectively obtain the most suitable parameter values and also save many working time in comparison with the existing method directly performed by humans.

A Rating curve is a regression equation of discharge versus stage for a given point on a stream where the stream discharge is measured across the stream channel with a stage and discharge measurement. The curve is generally used to calculate discharge based on the stage. However, the existing approach showed problems in terms of estimating uncertainty associated with regression parameters including the separation parameter for low and high flow. In this regard, this study aimed to develop a new method for the aforementioned problems based on Bayesian approach, which can better estimate the parameter and its uncertainty. In addition, this study used a Bayesian Multi-Segmented (Bayesian M-S) model which is provided a comparison between the existing and proposed scheme. The proposed model showed better results for the parameter estimation than the existing approach, and provided better performance in terms of estimating uncertainty range.

In accelerated life tests, the failure time of an item is observed under a high stress level and based on the time, the failure rates of items we estimated at the normal stress level. In this paper, when the mean of the prior distribution of a parameter is known in Weibull lifetime model with censored failure time data, we study various estimating methods to obtain the empirical Bayes estimator of a parameter from the empirical Bayes approach under the normal stress level by considering the fact that the Bayes estimator is the function of prior parameters and of the acceleration parameter representing the effect of acceleration. And we compare the performance of several empirical Bayes estimators of a parameter in terms of the Bayes risk.

This paper presents a Fourier based algorithm for estimating the parameters of the low frequency oscillating modes. The proposed methods estimates various parameters(frequency, damping factor, mode magnitude, phase) by fitting Fourier spectrum and phase with a damped exponential cosine function. Dominant frequency is selected by taking frequency corresponding to the peak spectrum, and damping factor is estimated using the left/right spectra of Fourier spectrum. In addition, mode magnitude is calculated by the normalized peak spectrum, and phase is estimated from spectrum phase. Also, we introduce an accuracy index in order to determine the accuracy of the estimated parameters, and the index is calculated using the deviations of the peak spectrum and the left/right spectra. The parameter estimation methods proposed in this paper include very simple arithmetical processes, so the algorithms are simple and the calculation speed is very fast. The proposed methods are applied to test functions with two dominant modes. The results show that the proposed methods are highly applicable to low frequency parameter estimation.
