  • Now, mathematics textbook is being developed in accordance with the 7th educational curriculum. It is expected that qualified textbook reflecting 'differentiated education' concept be developed and published. But there are still many limitations of textbook authorization system to develop 'such' textbook. Many authors of textbook have difficulty in developing creative and qualified textbooks in their own way. In this paper, we deal with what the authors should keep in mind and could reflect related on textbook authorization system in developing textbook. For this purpose, focusing on new 'content principle' of mathematics textbook authorization, the paper presented its educational background.

  • There has been much concern and worry about executing school curriculum from the year 2000 because the seventh curriculum is based on the complicated' differentiated education' concept. Now the new textbook has been developed according to the curriculum. This paper will reinforce the understanding of the curriculum and textbook in school math. In order to do this, this paper will present questions on three subjects to help school teachers and people related to math education to probe and discuss the benefits and problems of teaching math using the new textbook. The three subjects are based on the contents included in certain chapters of the math textbook. These are 1) understanding mathematics concepts using manipulatives or concrete objects, 2) doing math projects or problem solving activities 3) learning mathematics using calculators. furthermore, it is emphasized in this paper that math teachers must keep in mind that they should execute instruction in their own way using the 'textbook' not as a bible but as a guideline.

  • This article examines the image of the nation of the Union of Myanmar (Burma) by comparing the history textbook and the civic textbook prescribed in state schools during the period of independence from 1948 to 1958. After the Second World War, the political conditions gave the way for the formation of the Union of Myanmar composed of ethnic nationals in Myanmar. To shape the national identity, the newly-founded independent nation in 1948, introduced textbooks in history and civics for the purpose of nation building. The paper concludes that the history textbook illustrated the golden ages of the Myanmar kingdom by way of national consolidation and portrayed ethnic nationals as homogenous; on the other hand, the civic textbook defined a citizen as one who is born and raised in Myanmar; it also included migrant Asians such as Chinese and South Asians in the fold. The history textbook aspired for the national consolidation of ethnic nationals for the strength and prosperity of the country while the civic textbook required cooperation from both ethnic nationals and migrant Asians for peace and development of the country and the world.

  • In this paper, we define the functions of e-textbook(electronic textbook) for complementing weak points of traditional textbooks. Also, we propose a markup language format for representing e-textbook with XML which is a standard of interoperability on the internet. And we design and implement an e-textbook which shows the various functions of the e-textbook. Finally, we show some examples which make use of the developed e-textbook using the browser.

  • This exploratory study focuses on analyzing three mathematics textbooks in Germany, Singapore and South Korea to reveal similarities and differences in their introductions of fraction concepts. Findings reveal that all three countries' textbooks introduce fraction concepts predominantly by using pictorial representations such as area models, but the introductions of multiple fraction constructs vary. The Singaporean and South Korean textbooks predominantly used a part-whole construct to introduce fractional concepts while the German textbook introduced various constructs sequentially in the first pages using several scenarios from different real-life situations. The findings were represented using visual representations, which we called textbook signatures. The textbook signatures provided configurations of the textbook features across the three countries. At the end of paper, we share insights and limitations about the use of textbook signatures in the research on textbook analysis.

  • The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of using digital science textbook on the scientific problem solving of elementary school students. For this research, an instrument to measure student's problem-solving skills was developed. The pretest and posttest scores of one hundred and six 5th grade students' problem-solving skills were analyzed and also the responses of three students who were selected by their levels in the problem-solving science digital textbook class were qualitatively analyzed. The results of this study were as follows; the scores of problem solving skills of science digital textbook groups were higher than that of traditional paper textbook group(p<.05). In the qualitative analysis of the students' reponses in a digital textbook class according to their achievement level, low-achievers' problem-solving skills were much more improved than high- and mid-achievers' skills. In conclusion, science digital textbook has a potential to improve students' scientific problem solving skills, and this possibility will be much higher when science digital textbook is used with teachers' intended instructional goals and strategies like problem-solving lessons.
