This study was conducted as a preliminary study for the recycling of palladium and palladium oxide. In this study, thermodynamic equations for the formation of palladium oxide (PdO) are established. Palladium chloride is dissolved into hydrochloric acid to generate a palladium chloride solution. Nanosized palladium oxide powder with an average particle size below 30 nm were generated from this raw material solution by means of a spray pyrolysis process. The palladium oxide particles were composed of a single solid crystal. The results of XRD analysis showed that only a PdO phase of the generated powder was formed. And, the specific surface area of the generated palladium powder was approximately $32m^2/g$.

Palladium particles were synthesized by conventional chemical reduction method with ionic liquids. The size and shape of palladium particles were significantly affected by the cation parts of ionic liquids. This is mainly attributed to the different stabilities of the ionic liquid structure formed by the physical bond between the cation parts. Among ionic liquids with [$BF_{4}$] as an anion part, the hexyl substituent in the cation parts was more effective to synthesize palladium particles with the smaller size and more uniform shape.

Palladium (Pd) nanoparticles attached graphene (GR) composite was synthesized for an enhanced glucose biosensor. Aerosol spray pyrolysis (ASP) was employed to synthesize the GR-Pd composite using a colloidal mixture of graphene oxide (GO) and palladium chloride ($PdCl_2$) precursor. The effects of the weight ratio of the Pd/GR on the particle properties including the morphology and crystal structure were investigated. The morphology of GR-Pd composites was generally the shape of a crumpled paper ball, and the average composite size was about $1{\mu}m$. Pd nanoparticles less than 20 nm in diameter were deposited on GR sheets and the Pd nanoparticles showed clear crystallinity. The characteristic of the glucose biosensor fabricated with the as-prepared GR-Pd composite was tested through cyclic voltammetry measurements. The biosensor exhibited a high current flow as well as clear redox peaks, which resulted in a superior ability of the catalyst in terms of an electrochemical reaction. The highest sensitivity obtained from the amperometric response of the glucose biosensor was $14.4{\mu}A/mM{\cdot}cm^2$.
In the present study, we suggest a new way to reactivate performance of direct formic acid fuel cell (DFAFC) and explain its mechanism by employing electrochemical analyses like chronoamperometry (CA) and cyclic voltammogram (CV). For the evaluation of DFAFC performance, palladium (Pd) and platinum (Pt) are used as anode and cathode catalysts, respectively, and are applied to a Nafion membrane by catalyst-coated membrane spraying. After long DFAFC operation performed at 0.2 and 0.4 V and then CV test, DFAFC performance is better than its initial performance. It is attributed to dissolution of anode Pd into $Pd^{2+}$. By characterizations like TEM, Z-potential, CV and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, it is evaluated that such dissolved $Pd^{2+}$ ions lead to (1) increase in the electrochemically active surface by reduction in Pd particle size and its improved redistribution and (2) increment in the total oxidation charge by fast reaction rate of the Pd dissolution reaction.
The reaction of $PdCl_2$ dispersed in tetra-n-butylammonium bromide with tributyl amine at $120^{\circ}C$ under argon leads to stable isolable nanometric particles. X-ray diffraction analysis of the material indicated that it is constituted of Pd(0). Transmission electron microscopy analysis of the particles dispersed in acetone shows the mean particle size distribution ($4{\pm}1\;nm$). The isolated palladium nanoparticles can be dispersed in an ionic liquid or in methanol or used in solventless condition for selective hydrogenation of 2-hexyne under mild reaction conditions(0.2 MPa and $20^{\circ}C$). The commercial variety of the Lindlar catalyst was also studied for comparative investigations.
Palladium on carbon catalysts for hexafluoropropylene hydrogenation were prepared using imidazolium hexafluorophosphate with various cation parts. The morphology of palladium was relatively affected by the cation parts of the ionic liquid. With increasing alkyl chains of the ionic liquid cation, the shape of palladium particle changed from spherical to cylindrical due to the effect of steric stabilization. After calcination at $500^{\circ}C$, all catalysts possessed the comparable crystal structure. Under the identical reaction conditions, the catalyst prepared using the ionic liquid with hexyl chain in cation parts showed the most effective reactivity.
A simple solvothermal reaction was used to prepare a 3-aminopropyl-functionalized silica-gel-based adsorbent for adsorbing Pd(II) from the nitric acid solution. Scanning electron microscopy, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetry analysis were performed on the as-synthesized adsorbent to demonstrate the successful introduction of Schiff base groups. Batch experiments were used to investigate the effects of contact time, nitric acid concentration, solution temperature, and adsorption capacity. It is worth noting that the prepared adsorbent exhibited a higher affinity toward Pd(II) with the uptake approximately 100% even in a 2 M HNO3 solution. At an equilibrium time of 5 h, the maximum adsorption capacity of Pd(II) was estimated to be 0.452 mmol/g. The adsorbed Pd(II) could be completely eluted by dissolving 0.2 M thiourea solution in 0.1 M HNO3. Using a combination of particle-induced X-ray emission analysis and an X-ray photoelectron spectrometer, the adsorbed Pd was found to be uniformly distributed on the surface of the prepared adsorbent and the existing species were Pd(II) and zero-valent Pd(0). Due to the desirable performances, facile preparation method, and abundant raw material source, the prepared adsorbent demonstrated a high application potential in the recovery of Pd(II) from simulated high-level liquid waste treatment.

Spin-coating electrostatic self-assembly (SCESA) is utilized to fabricate a single layer of carboxylic-acid-coated Pd nanoparticles (NPs) (D??5 nm) on an oppositely charged surface. The packing density of a NP monolayer formed on a rotating solid substrate (3000 rpm) was examined with regards to various parameters, including the particle concentration, the pH, and the ionic strength of the solution. Initially, the packing density grew exponentially with increases in the particle concentration, up to a maximum value (of 8.4 ´ 1011/cm2) at 1.2 wt%. The packing density was also found to increase drastically as the pH decreased and the ionic strength of the solution increased; these trends can be attributed to a reduction in the interparticle repulsions among the NPs in the solution and on the substrate. The best result of this study was achieved in a 1.2 wt% solution at pH 8; under these conditions, an NP monolayer with the highest density (namely, 1.6 ´ 1012/cm2) was obtained.
Nano Pd spot-coated active carbon powders were synthesized by a hydrothermal-attachment method (HAA) using PVP capped Pd colloid in a high pressure bomb at $250^{\circ}C$, 450 psi, respectively. The PVP capped Pd colloid was synthesized by the precipitation-redispersion method. PVP capped Pd nano particles showed the narrow size distribution and their particle sizes were less than 8nm in diameter. In the case of nano Pd-spot coated active carbon powders, nano-sized Pd particles were adhered in the active carbon powder surface by HAA method. The component of Pd was homogeneously distributed on the active carbon surface.
To observe the bonding behavior of palladium-based alloys to porcelain; 1. Pd-Co binary alloy with the higher cobalt content, 2. Pd-Co binary alloy with the lower cobalt content, 3. Pd-Ag-Sn ternary alloy, 4. Pd-Ag binary alloy, 5. Pd-Cu-Au ternary alloy and 6. Pd-Cu binary alloy were made as 6 groups of experimental alloys. Each group of alloy was divided into 4 sub-groups such as one sub-group that was not degassed and three sub-groups that degassed for 5 minutes, 10 minutes and 15 minutes. On each specimen, weight changes after degassing, morphological changes of oxide layer by changing the degassing time, compositional changes at metal-ceramic interface and bond strength of metal-ceramic measured with planar shear test were observed and compared. The results of the present study allow the following conclusions to be drawn: 1. The alloy showing the greatest bond strength was Pd-Cu alloy without gold and bond strength was decreased by alloying gold to them. 2. Although Pd-Co alloy showed the most prominent oxidation behavior, bond strength of them to porcelain was not greatly high by the formation of porosities at metal-ceramic interfaces. 3. Likewise tin, cobalt formed the peaks on line profiles at metal-ceramic interface, however copper did not exhibit such peaks on line profiles. 4. Mainly, oxide layer on Pd-Co alloy was composed with cobalt, and for Pd-Co alloy with higher cobalt content the rise of bond strength was not significant by increased degassing time. 5. On Pd-Ag alloy not containing tin, during degassing for 15 minutes silver content was increased at metal-ceramic interface. 6. As an oxidized element, tin formed the oxide layers that widen their area by increasing the degassing time, while cobalt and copper showed the morphological changes of particle or crystal on oxide layer.
