  • As an important branch of decoration of blue and white painting, folk blue and white painting not only has a very long history, but also has a very distinctive folklore and artistry. During the Ming and qing dynasties is an important period, in the development of the folk blue and white painting, the folk craftsmen through long-term study and practice, constantly familiar with drawing technique to master the method, combining folk life form, and folk painting decorative expression aesthetic demand, thus make the painting MinSuXing and artistic expression continuously into the blue and white porcelain painting in the process of development, become an important and indispensable component of ceramic decoration.

  • Pigments used paintings, ornaments, weapons and various objects have been recognised as important elements to ascertain the history, manufacturing technique and cultural migration. Since the understanding of composition of pigments by analysis began in 1963, its technique and methodology has much advanced in recent years; recent study used the portable X-ray Fluorescence as non-destructive analysis has been practiced in particular. However the study on pigments necessitates overall and systematic research because it is difficult to understand periodical and regional use of pigments. by fractional studies. Therefore this research investigates the coloring materials and painting techniques of the scroll painting depicting preaching scene of Sakyamuni Buddha in Daeungjeon Hall, a main hall of Bulguk temple, through scientific analysis and comparison of various pigments which had been applied to the buddhist paintings of Joseon Dynasty. Consequently, it is confirmed that the scroll painting used pigments of white lead[$2PbCO_3{\cdot}Pb(OH)_2$] for ground layer and used mixture of different pigments such as cinnabar (HgS) minium($Pb_3O_4$) malachite($2CuO{\cdot}CO_2{\cdot}H_2O$) hematite($Fe_2O_3$) gold(Ag) for presenting various colors on the painting layer. It has been also believed that mineral pigments were applied to the scroll painting, yet it is difficult to confirm whether it is natural or synthetic pigments because the crystal structures of pigments were not analyzed. The results of this study, however, provide useful reference data for the understanding of the components of pigments and manufacturing techniques of buddhist scroll paintings, in particular, of Joseon Dynasty.

  • Various digital contents generation techniques are widely utilized by upgrading PC and mobile device. In this paper, we propose sketch effect simulation based on real drawing pieces. For this, we analyze Vincent Van Gogh's drawing pieces; and then construct DB by extracting sketch stroke pattern of each object. From this database, we select stroke pattern at each object, and then, apply it. Our algorithm can generate similar effect look like real drawing piece. It may be utilized various contents such as children's painting education book.

  • Owing to high speed internet technologies, video conferencing systems are exploited in our home as well as work places using a laptop or a webcam. Although eye contact in the video conferencing system is significant, most systems do not support good eye contact due to improper locations of cameras. Several ideas have been proposed to solve the eye contact problem; however, some of them require complicated hardware configurations and expensive customized hardwares. In this paper, we propose a simple eye gaze correction method using the three-dimensional (3D) affine transformation. We also apply an image in-painting method to fill empty holes that are caused by round-off errors from the coordinate transformation. From experiments, we obtained visually improved results.

  • With the rapid development of deep learning and artificial intelligence, generative models have achieved remarkable success in the field of image generation. By combining the stable diffusion method with Web UI technology, a novel solution is provided for the application of AI painting generation. The application prospects of this technology are very broad and can be applied to multiple fields, such as digital art, concept design, game development, and more. Furthermore, the platform based on Web UI facilitates user operations, making the technology more easily applicable to practical scenarios. This paper introduces the basic principles of Stable Diffusion Web UI technology. This technique utilizes the stability of diffusion processes to improve the output quality of generative models. By gradually introducing noise during the generation process, the model can generate smoother and more coherent images. Additionally, the analysis of different model types and applications within Stable Diffusion Web UI provides creators with a more comprehensive understanding, offering valuable insights for fields such as artistic creation and design.

From Paris and Shanghai to Singapore: A Multidisciplinary Study in Evaluating the Provenance and Dating of Two of Liu Kang's Paintings

  • This paper focuses on the dating and provenance of two paintings, Climbing the hill and View from St. John's Fort by the prominent Singaporean artist Liu Kang (1911-2004). Climbing the hill, from the National Gallery Singapore collection, was believed to have been created in 1937, based on the date painted by the artist. However, a non-invasive examination unveiled evidence of an underlying paint scheme and a mysterious date, 1948 or 1949. These findings prompted a comprehensive technical study of the artwork in conjunction with comparative analyses of View from St. John's Fort (1948), from the Liu family collection. The latter artwork is considered to be depicting the same subject matter. The investigation was carried out with UVF, NIR, IRFC, XRR, digital microscopy, PLM and SEM-EDS to elucidate the materials and technique of both artworks and find characteristic patterns that could indicate a relationship between both paintings and assist in correctly dating Climbing the hill. The technical analyses were supplemented with the historical information derived from the Liu family archives. The results showed that Climbing the hill was created in 1948 or 1949 on top of an earlier composition painted in Shanghai between 1933 and 1937. As for the companion View from St. John's Fort from 1948, the artist reused an earlier painting created in France in 1931. The analytical methods suggested that Liu Kang used almost identical pigment mixtures for creating new artworks. However, their painting technique demonstrates some differences. Overall, this study contributes to the understanding of Liu Kang's painting materials and his working practice.

Material and Manufacturing Properties of Bracket Mural Paintings of Daeungjeon Hall in Gaeamsa Temple, Buan

  • This study examined the production technique of bracket murals in Daeungjeon Hall, Gaeamsa Temple by conducting a analysis of their wall structure, material characteristics, and painting layers. Wall was a single-branch structure with support layer, middle layer, finishing layer, and painting layer. The support layer, middle layer and finishing layer, were produced by mixing sand (quartz, feldspars etc.), and loess. The ratio of above medium sand to below fine sand was approximately 0.7 : 9.3 in the support layer, 4 : 6 in the middle layer and 6 : 4 in the finishing layer, which had a more percentage of above medium sand than the support layer. The analysis of the painting layer showed that natural soil pigment was used to establish a relatively ground layer of up to 50 ㎛, and pigments such as Lead sulfate, atacamite and mercury sulfide were painted on top of the layer. This study's results confirmed that the bracket mural paintings in Gaeamsa Temple are within the category of the production style of murals during the Joseon period. However, the points that the middle layer was formed several times, the significant difference in particle size distribution between the wall, and the absence of chopped straw in the support layer are a feature of bracket mural paintings in Gaeamsa Temple. These properties of murals as material and structure may be viewed for correlation with the degree of damage to wall structure of mural painting and would serve as an important reference to diagnosis the conservation conditions of murals or prepare conservation treatments.

A study of the Cartoonish Element in Folk Painting (민화(民畵)의 만화(漫畵)적 요소 연구)

  • The discussion on folk painting (minwha) has been continued till recent in various ways. MinWha is applied by painting artists and also utilized as a basic material of design. These are the attempts approved by the viewpoint of the 'Korean beauty'. In saying so, minwha symbolizes for typical types of Korean painting, and is articulated as an aspect of forgotten spirit. However, despite the fact of Minwha's frequent application, and its evident originality, it remains only the thread of the existence. Although minwha has a lot of commonalities and similarities with the characteristics of cartooning, a decisive attempt of cartooning is hardly shown through. Therefore, this paper is aim to classify creative paintings by the distinctive features of minwha, such as exaggeration and abridgment, sarcasm and current affair aspect, common technique of art drawing, caricatured element, expression of an ideal world, various techniques from artist's different comprehension, etcetera and to make opportunity to constructively apply these features in cartoons. The types of minwha are mostly classified by the contents of the painting. However, since the purpose of this thesis is to find caricatured aspects in minwha, it will be largely classified by the elements of animal, plant, human, insect species, finny tribe, feathered tribe, and nature phenomenon. This classification takes advantage of accessibility to understand the characterization of the object, and leads to take a positive approach.

Convergence evaluation method using multisensory and matching painting and music using deep learning based on imaginary soundscape (Imaginary Soundscape 기반의 딥러닝을 활용한 회화와 음악의 매칭 및 다중 감각을 이용한 융합적 평가 방법)

  • In this study, we introduced the technique of matching classical music using deep learning to design soundscape that can help the viewer appreciate painting and proposed an evaluation index to evaluate how well matching painting and music. The evaluation index was conducted with suitability evaluation through the Likeard 5-point scale and evaluation in a multimodal aspect. The suitability evaluation score of the 13 test participants for the deep learning based best match between painting and music was 3.74/5.0 and band the average cosine similarity of the multimodal evaluation of 13 participants was 0.79. We expect multimodal evaluation to be an evaluation index that can measure a new user experience. In addition, this study aims to improve the experience of multisensory artworks by proposing the interaction between visual and auditory. The proposed matching of painting and music method can be used in multisensory artwork exhibition and furthermore it will increase the accessibility of visually impaired people to appreciate artworks.
