This paper presents a study into pH Indicator-Embedded hydrogel micro-particles which are encoded various shapes according to the captured indicator. We incorporate various pH indicators into a photo-curable hydrogel, PEG-DA(Poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate). Using the latest fluidic lithography techniques, we can easily fabricate variously patterned hydrogel particles based on in-situ photopolymerization of the PEG-DA in a micro-fluidic channel. The shape of the particle is related to the pH indicator inside the particle. We demonstrate that the micro pH sensors change their colors according to the pH levels. The micro pH sensors have various characteristics that are related to the curing time, particle size, etc. By changing these conditions, we can adjust the long term stability and reaction time of the hybrid micro pH sensors.
Ths signal processing technqiue of FET type electrolyte sensors using the back propagation neural network was studied to reduce the interference effects of the different electrolytes. The FET-type electrolyte sensors, pH-ISFET, K-ISFET, and Ca-ISFET, were prepared to measure the pH, K, and Ca electrolytes. Neural network consisted of three layers was learned with 8 patterns and 9 patterns. The sensor output obtained with arbitrary concentrations was processed by the learned neural network. The errors obtained from calibration curve for pH, K, and Ca were .+-.0.039 pH, .+-.2.508 mmol/l, and .+-.1.807 mmol/l, respectively, without considering the interference effects. The errors of the network output for pH, K, and Ca were reduced to .+-.0.005 pH, .+-.0.436 mmol/l, and .+-.0.381 mmol/l in case of 9 patterns, respectively. the signal processing using the neural network can reduce the errors ofthe electrolyte sensor outputs caused by the interference effect, thereby providing effectiveness in the improvement of the sensor selectivity.
Recent studies demonstrated the ability of carbon nanotube (CNT) to promote electron transfer reactions of important compounds and to impart higher stability onto electrochemical sensors. CNT-based sensors measured by hydroxyl radical concentration or pH value suggest great promise for biosensors. This paper describes a new method for fabricating a very simple and inexpensive pH sensor compose of single walled-carbon nanotubes (SW-CNTs) using an ultra-precision spray. CNT-based sensor shows pH sensitivity in buffer solution at different pH range. Our experimental results show the sensor responses to pH buffer solution and the conductance of depends on the pH values. These results support application possibility of SW-CNTs based pH sensor for mass production.
In this research, the pH sensor was developed using CNT nanosheet with Nafion coating for the advanced medical sensor such as a blood gas analyzer. The CNT nanosheet was formed by dielectrophoresis and water-meniscus between cantilever-type electrodes. Then, the process of the heat annealing and the Nafion coating was conducted for reducing contact resistance and giving proton selectivity respectively. We measured the response of the pH sensor as the electrolyte-gated CNT-nanosheet field effect transistor. The sensor showed a linear current ratio in a similar range of the normal blood pH. A calibration method for decreasing of the response variation among sensors has also been introduced. Coefficient of variance of the pH sensor was decreased by applying the calibration method. A linear relation between the calibrated response of the sensors and pH variance was also obtained. Finally, the pH sensor with a high resolution was fabricated and we verify the feasibility of the sensor by applying the calibration method.

Recently, dense sensor instrumentation for structural health monitoring has motivated the need for novel passive wireless sensors that do not require a portable power source, such as batteries. Using a layer-by-layer self-assembly process, nano-structured multifunctional carbon nanotube-based thin film sensors of controlled morphology are fabricated. Through judicious selection of polyelectrolytic constituents, specific sensing transduction mechanisms can be encoded within these homogenous thin films. In this study, the thin films are specifically designed to change electrical properties to strain and pH stimulus. Validation of wireless communications is performed using traditional magnetic coil antennas of various turns for passive RFID (radio frequency identification) applications. Preliminary experimental results shown in this study have identified characteristic frequency and bandwidth changes in tandem with varying strain and pH, respectively. Finally, ongoing research is presented on the use of gold nanocolloids and carbon nanotubes during layer-by-layer assembly to fabricate highly conductive coil antennas for wireless communications.
The ISFET(ion sensitive field effect transistor), a semiconductor ion sensor, has many advantages over conventional ion sensors. Various single-sensor type ISFET pH-meters have been developed. However, they could not be applied in fields because their performances are directly affected by the sensor condition. With only one sensor, the system could be easily damaged from environmental factors, and reliability of it is decreased. Therefore, a 4-channel PH-meter system is proposed to improve the reliability of ISFET pH-meter. It has 4 ISFETS as ion sensor, and a software which contains a new calibration and measurement algorithm appropriate to the system. The reliability of the system was proved by measuring hydrogen ion concentration in the pH standard solutions and buffer solutions.
A solid state ion sensor module has been developed and evaluated for hydroponic nutrients analysis. The sensor module consisted of five ion-selective electrodes (ISE) fabricated by screen-printing technology. The electrochemical responses of ion sensors for nitrate, ammonium, potassium, calcium, and pH were measured with specially designed 7-channel low voltage signal transducers. The analytical characteristics of the sensors were comparable with those of conventional ISE sensors. The solid state ion sensors exhibit linear relationships over five concentration decades. Detection limit of the sensors were $5.6{\times}10^{-5}{\sim}1.6{\times}10^{-7}M$ depends on ions. Performance test results showed that relative errors of measured ion concentrations were less than 5% for $NO_3{^-},\;K^+,\;Ca^{2+}$ ion, and pH. The concentration of $NO_3{^-},\;NH_4{^+},\;K^+,\;Ca^{2+}$, and pH ion in standard solution and nutrient solutions could be determined by direct potentiometric measurements without any conditioning before measurements.
A fiber optic pH sensor has been fabricated using nile blue entrapped in an ammonia catalyzed silica sol-gel film coated on glass substrate by dip-coating. The sensor was fixed on the end of an optical fiber. The sensor showed pH sensitivity when dipped into liquids at different pHs. Linear and reproducible responses were obtained in standard buffer solutions in the pH range $6.0{\sim}8.5$, which encompasses the clinically-relevant range. The effects of interferences on the determination of pH were also investigated. The sensors were successfully applied to the determination of pH in different commercial ionic drinks.
Highly integrated ISFETs require the monolithic implementation of ISFETs, CMOS electronics, and additional sensors on the same chip This paper presents novel packaging type of CMOS ISFET pH sensor using standard CMOS FET chip and extended sensing membrane which is separated from CMOS FET. This proposed packaging type will make it easy to fabricate CMOS ISFET pH sensors
