  • The purpose of this study is to examine whether any correlation exists between the dental health capacity and preferred foods of Korean senior citizens over the age of 65 years. The 5th Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey were used. Tissue health index (T-health), Sound teeth (ST), Functioning teeth index (FS-T), Present teeth (PT), and Missing teeth (MT) were used as variables to assess the dental health capacity of the elderly. Preferred foods of the elderly included 63 foods that were categorized as cereals, pulses and roots, meat and poultry, fish, vegetables, sea algae, fruits, milk and dairy products, cream and sugar, and other foods. For data analysis, the weighted average was taken into consideration to generate planning files, and then complex sample analysis were conducted. For statistical analysis, frequency analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and compound specimen linear regression analysis were conducted. T-health score was significantly high in the group with high preference for cereals, fruits, and other foods. In terms of age and economic status, 65~69 years, 70~74 years, and mid to low range in the income ranges scored high in T-health. ST score was significant in the group that preferred cereals, other foods; the corresponding demographic profiles represent 65~69 years, 70~74 years, and the mid-range income communities. FS-T was significant in relation with a preference for fruits, creams and sugars, other foods; the scores were also high for 65~69 years, 70~74 years, and mid-low to low income groups. PT and MT were significant in the group that preferred cereals and fruits; the same applied for 65~69 years, 70~74 years, and mid-low to low income individuals (p<0.05). Food preferences seemed to vary depending on the dental health state of the elderly, and the dental health state of the elderly may act as a risk factor for nutritional imbalance.

  • GABA transaminase is inactivated by preincubation with p$^1$, p$^2$-bis(5'-pyridoxal) diphosphate at pH 7.0. The inactivation under pseudo-first order conditions proceeds at a slow rate (K$\_$obs/=0.035 min$\^$-1/). The degree of labeling of the enzyme by p$^1$, p$^2$-bis(5'-pyridoxal) diphosphate was determined by absorption spectroscopy, The blocking of 2 lysyl residues/dimer is needed for inactivation of the transaminase. The time course of the reaction is significantly affected by the substrate ${\alpha}$-ketoglutarate, which afforded complete protection against the loss of the catalytic activity. Whereas cofator pyridoxal phosphate failed to prevent the inactivation of the enzyme. Therefore, it is postulated that binding of ${\alpha}$-ketoglutarate tn lysyl residues is the major factor contributing to stabilization of the catalytic site and bifuctional reagent p$^1$, p$^2$bis(5'-pyridoxal) diphosphate blocks lysyl residues other than those involved in the binding of the cofactor.

  • Objectives: Extensive evidence links low vitamin D status and comorbidities with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outcomes, but the results of published studies are contradictory. Therefore, we investigated the association of lower levels of vitamin D and comorbidities with the risk of COVID-19 infection. Methods: We searched MEDLINE (via PubMed), Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and ClinicalTrials.gov for articles published until August 20, 2021. Sixteen eligible studies were identified (386 631 patients, of whom 181 114 were male). We included observational cohort and case-control studies that evaluated serum levels of vitamin D in COVID-19-positive and COVID-19-negative patients. Mean differences (MDs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. Results: Significantly lower vitamin D levels were found in COVID-19-positive patients (MD, -1.70; 95% CI, -2.74 to -0.66; p=0.001), but with variation by study design (case-control: -4.04; 95% CI, -5.98 to -2.10; p<0.001; cohort: -0.39; 95% CI, -1.62 to 0.84; p=0.538). This relationship was more prominent in female patients (MD, -2.18; 95% CI, -4.08 to -0.28; p=0.024) than in male patients (MD, -1.74; 95% CI, -3.79 to 0.31; p=0.096). Male patients showed higher odds of having low vitamin D levels (odds ratio [OR], 2.09; 95% CI, 1.38 to 3.17; p<0.001) than female patients (OR, 1.17; 95% CI, 0.74 to 1.86; p=0.477). Comorbidities showed inconsistent, but generally nonsignificant, associations with COVID-19 infection. Conclusions: Low serum vitamin-D levels were significantly associated with the risk of COVID-19 infection. This relationship was stronger in female than in male COVID-19 patients. Limited evidence was found for the relationships between comorbidities and COVID-19 infection, warranting large population-based studies to clarify these associations.

  • Sasa quelpaertensis Nakai leaves contain a mixture of polysaccharides, amino acids, and polyphenols, which mediate various biological activities. For efficient utilization of its leaf, we reported the preparation procedure for phytochemical-rich extract (PRE) using the leaf residue, which was by-product of hot water extraction. This study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of PRE and its major constituent, p-coumaric acid,on the growth of several human cancer cell lines (MKN-74, MKN-45, SNU-1, SNU-16, and HL-60). The ethyl acetate fraction of PRE and p-coumaric acid significantly inhibited the proliferation of MKN-74 and HL-60 cells, respectively, and induced cell apoptosis, down-regulated Bcl-2 and poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase levels, and up-regulated those of Bax and caspase-3. These results show the potential utility of S. quelpaertensis Nakai leaves in cancer prevention.

  • In this study, to investigate the effect of chemical pretreatment for livestock wastewater, laboratory scale test for ozonation and linked treatment of sewage were conducted. and the results were obtained as follows. The ozonation of livestock wastewater showed the COD removal rate per hour to be 17%, 78% and 62% at each pH 4, 7 and 10, respectively. With transformation of NBDCOD to biodegradable BDCOD by ozonation, the ratio of SCODcr/TCODcr was increased from 26% to 38%. Accordingly, pretreatment of livestock wastewater affected to the biological post treatment process to elevate removal efficiency by transformation of nonbiodegradable mass to biodegradable mass. As the results of linked treatment of pre-ozonated livestock wastewater and sewage in the MLE process, the treatment efficiencies of TCODcr 93.8%, T-N 74.3%, T-P 89.7%, SS 97.5% were earned at 100% of internal recycle rate. When the internal recycle rate was increased to 150%, the treatment efficiencies of TCODcr 94.5%, T-N 54.5%, T-P 70.8%, SS 98.5% were earned. Also the removal efficiencies of TCODcr 92.6%, T-N 83.1%, T-P 81.9%, SS 98.5% were earned as the internal recycle rate was increased to 200%. Especially, nitrogen removal efficiency in the linked treatment showed 74.3%, 54.5%, 83.1% at 100%, 150% and 200% of internal recycle ratio, respectively, which revealed the tendency of higher removal efficiency than that of sewage treatment.
