Monitoring of Antimicrobial and Preservatives in Dentifrice (치약제 중 항균성분 및 보존제 조사 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate present status of use about antimicrobial agent (triclosan, ethanol) and preservatives (sodium benzoate, methyl p-hydroxybenzoate, propyl p-hydroxybenzoate) in dentifrice. 75 samples including 16 mouthwashes were analyzed in this study. Contents of triclosan and preservatives were analyzed using by HPLC and ethanol was analyzed by headspace-GC. Preservatives were detected from total 37 samples, which are suitable for the legal limits in Korea. Methyl p-hydroxybenzoate was detected from 26 samples (0.003~0.19%), propyl p-hydroxybenzoate was detected from 11 samples (0.002~0.02%) and sodium benzoate was detected from 14 samples (0.1~0.3%), respectively. Methyl p-hydroxybenzoate was detected from 6 samples (0.03~0.19%), propyl p-hydroxybenzoate was detected from 1 samples (0.01%) and sodium benzoate was detected form 5 samples (0.1~0.2%) in 20 dentifrice for children. Triclosan was not detected from 75 samples. Ethanol was detected from 16 samples (4.9~21.9%) in 19 samples; among them three samples showed the higher contents (20.5~21.9%) but ethanol contents was not labeled in these samples.

Dechlorination of 4-Chlorobenzoate by Pseudomonas sp. DJ-12

  • 4-Chlorobiphenyl-degrading Pseudomonas sp. DJ-12 was able to degrade 4-chlorobenzoate(4CBA), 4-iodobenzoate, and 4-bromobenzoate completely under aerobic conditions. During. the degradation of 4CBA by Pseudomonas sp. DJ-12, chloride ions were released by dechlorination and 4-hydroxybenzoate was produced as an intermediate metabolite. The NotI-KNA fragments of pKC157 containing dechlorination genes hybridized with the gene encoding 4CBA:CoA dehalogenase of Pseudomonas sp. CBS3 which is responsible for the hydrolytic dechlorination of 4CBA. These results imply that Pseudomonas sp. DJ-12 degrades 4CBA to 40hydroxybenzoate via dechlorination as the initial step of its degradativ pathway. The genes responsible for dechlorination of 4CBA were found to be blcated on the chromosomal DNA of Pseudomonas sp. DJ-12.

Pseudo Liquid Crystallinity and Characteristics of PHB/PEN/PET Melt Blend (PHB/PEN/PET 삼상계 용융혼합물의 의사액정상 및 특성연구)

  • Poly(p-hydroxybenzoate) (PHB)/poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) 8/2 thermotropic liquid crystalline copolyester, poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate) (PEN) and PET were mechanically blended to obtain the pseudo liquid crystalline (LC) phase of ternary blends. The torque values of blends with increasing PHB content were abruptly decreased above 40 wt% of PHB content, because the melt viscosity of ternary blends decreased. Tensile strength and initial modulus of blends containing above 30 wt% PHB were improved with increasing PHB content. Tensile strength and modulus of fiber were increased with PHB contents and take-up speed. Degree of transesterification and randomness of blends were increased with blending time. The blend of 40 wt% PHB was shown pseudo LC phase in the polarized optical photographs. Crystallinity of PHB/PEN/PET ternary blend were increased with PHB content.

  • A bacterial isolate capable of degrading benzoate was selected from wastewater of Yocheon industrial complex and examined its biochemical characteristics and fatty acid composition. The isolate was identified as Klebsiella oxytoca strain C302. The strain C3O2 degraded catechol, protocatechuate, and 4-hydroxybenzoate as well as benzoate. The strain grew on and degraded 0.5 to 1.0 mM catechol most actively in MM2 medium at pH 7.0 and $30^{\circ}C$.

Studies on the Antifungal Activity of Capsaicine for 'Ganjang' Soy Sauce (Capsaicine의 간장방미효과에 관한 연구)

  • Cayenne pepper used traditionally as hot seasoning and for antifungal agent in "Ganjang" soy sauce in Korea. However the correlation between its component and antifungal activity has been unknown. CApsaicine is known as hot component of cayenne pepper. Antifungal activity of capsaicine in 'Ganjang' soy sauce was studied and the results are as follows; 1) In 'Ganjang' soy sauce, antifungal activity of capsaicine were strong in same degree with butyl-p-hydroxybenzoate. 2) Antifungal activity of capsaicine were intensified by the addition of sodium chloride. 3) The antifungal activity of capsaicine was increased by lower pH (pH 5.5-4.5) of 'Ganjang' soy sauce.

  • Data on the solubility of p-hydroxy-benzoate in amide-water cosolvent system and surface tension of the binary amide-water cosolvents are analyzed in terms of the possible mechanism for cosolvency. The results of the study suggest that strong partitioning of the alkylated amides to the ester surface, thus reducing the hydrophobic interface within the system, nay account for much of the cosolvency phenomena observed in these systems.

A survey on status of quality and risk assessment in dentifrices and mouthwashes (치약제 및 구중청량제의 품질 실태 조사 및 안전성 평가)

  • The quality of the products was investigated by analyzing fluorine content, pH, preservatives and tar colors in 31 dentifrice products (6 items for children) and 15 mouthwash products (2 items for children) marketed. It was intended to provide correct information to consumers by checking whether the standards and product indications match. As a result of measuring the fluoride concentration, 26 dentifrice and 15 mouthwash products contained from 48 to 1,472 ppm and from 85 to 225 ppm, respectively. Fluorine detection rates of dentifrice and mouthwash products were 83.9 and 83.3 %, respectively showing similar levels. Of the 41 fluoride-detected dentifrice and mouthwash products, 40 were 90.7~109.8 % of the displayed amount and suitable for the fluorine content standard of 90.0 to 110.0 %, but one dentifrice was found to be inappropriate at 36.3 % of the content indicated on the product. The pH of the dentifrice was 5.1~9.4, and the mouthwash was 4.2~6.2, which met all standards. As a result of simultaneous analysis of the concentration of six preservatives, benzoic acid was detected the most in 15 cases with a 30.6 % detection rate, sorbic acid was detected in 9 cases (detection rate of 18.4 %), and all four types of methyl p-hydroxybenzoate, ethyl p-hydroxybenzoate, propyl p-hydroxybenzoate, butyl p-hydroxybenzoate were not detected. As a result of analyzing the concentration of 10 types of tar colors, six types including red40, yellow4, yellow5, yellow203, green3, and blue1 were detected in a total of 9 cases (2 dentifrices and 7 mouthwashes) with blue1 being the most frequently detected. Detected fluorine concentration, added preservatives and tar colors were consistent with the product markings and it was well written on product packaging. The detected preservatives and tar colors were at a safe level due to low risk compared to Acceptable Daily Intake.

  • Four bacterial strains capable of catabolizing 4-chlorobiphen!;l (4CB) were isolated from the industrial waste waters. The bacterial isolates designated as PO$. P20, P27, and P1242. respectively, were examined for their catabolic activities. And in order to examine molecular homology of the 4CB catabolizing genes of these bacterial isolates. Southern hybridization was conducted with bphABC genes of P. p.srudoalculigrnrs KF707 as a DNA probe. The metabolites of 2-hydroxy-6-0x0-6-(4'-chlorophenyl)hexa-2 .4-dienoic acid and Cchlorobenzoate were detected to be produced by the isolatc:~ in the MM2 liquid cultures. But Cchlorobenzoate was further catabolized to produce 4.-hydroxybenzoate by DJ-12, P08. and P27. but not by P20 and P1242. As results of hybridization, homologous regions were commonly observed in Xhol fragments of 2.2 and 1.8 kb and in EcoRl fragment of 11 kb in the DJ- 12. P08, and P27 isolates. But in any restriction enzyme digests ot the P20 and PI242 isolates. homologous region was not detected. Determination of Tensile Modulus of PHB/PEN/PET Fiber Using Modified Halpin-Tsai Equation (변형 Halpin-Tsai식에 의한 PHB/PEN/PET 섬유의 탄성률 예측)

  • Poly(p-hydroxybenzoate) (PHB)/poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) 8/2 thermotropic liquid crystalline copolyester, poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate) (PEN), and PET ternary blend was spun to fiber by melt spinninB process, and tensile properties of the fibers were measured. The matrix of the fibers, PET and PEN, were dissolved in ο-chlorophenol at 55$^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours, and the liquid crystalline polymer fibrils were observed using a scanning electron microscope. Halpin-Tsai equation for modulus calculation of short fiber reinforced composite and the rule of mixture for continuous reinforcement composite were modified, and the tensile modulus were calculated and compared with experimental modulus. To minimize difference between the theoretical and the experimental moduli, dimensionless viscosity constant (K) was given and used to modify two equations. The theoretical tensile modulus using the newly modified equations presentel a similar to the experimental tensile modulus of composite, and the modified equations presented a unique way to determine the tensile modulus of the liquid crystalline polymer reinforced thermoplastic composites.
