  • Calculations of chemical equilibrium for multicomponent aqueous systems of the HyBRID dissolution of magnetite were performed by using the HSC Chemistry. They were done by using a Pitzer-based aqueous solution model with the recipe of raw materials in experiments conducted at KAERI. The change in the amounts of species and ions and the pH values of the solution at equilibrium was observed as functions of temperature and raw amount of CuSO4. Precipitation of Cu2O occurred at a large amount of CuSO4 added to the solution, while no precipitation of Cu(OH)2 was found at any amounts of CuSO4. The E-pH diagrams for Cu were constructed at various Cu concentrations to provide the effect of the Cu concentration on the pH values at boundaries where the coexistence of Cu+ ion and Cu2O solid occurred. To prevent Cu+ ions from being precipitated to Cu2O, the raw amount of CuSO4 should be adjusted so that the pH value of the solution from the equilibrium calculation is less than that from the E-pH diagram. We provided guidelines for the raw amount of CuSO4 and the pH value of the solution, which prevent the formation of Cu2O precipitates in the HyBRID dissolution experiments for magnetite.

  • Pure and Fe-doped CuO thin-film and powder samples were prepared using a sol-gel method. Undoped CuO films exhibited monoclinic structure and p-type electrical conductivity $(\~10^{-2}\;{\Omega^{-1}\;cm^{-1}$ due to copper deficiency. On the other hand, CuO: Fe films were found to be insulating and Li doping on the films led to a restoration of p-type conductivity and a ferromagnetic hysteresis behaviour at room temperature. The observed properties far the CuO : Fe, Li films can be explained in terms of hole creation by substitution of $Li^+$ for $Cu^{2+}$ sites and mediation of long-range interactions between $Fe^{3+}$ ions by the $Li^+$-induced defect states. CuO: Fe powders exhibited a ferromagnetism at room temperature with its strength being dependent on post-annealing temperature. Mossbauer measurements on the CuO: Fe films and powders revealed that the octahedral $Cu^{2+}$ sites are mostly substituted by $Fe^{3+}$ ions.

  • We report on the fabrication and photoelectrochemical(PEC) properties of a $Cu_2O$ thin film/ZnO nanorod array oxide p-n heterojunction structure with ZnO nanorods embedded in $Cu_2O$ thin film as an efficient photoelectrode for solar-driven water splitting. A vertically oriented n-type ZnO nanorod array was first prepared on an indium-tin-oxide-coated glass substrate via a seed-mediated hydrothermal synthesis method and then a p-type $Cu_2O$ thin film was directly electrodeposited onto the vertically oriented ZnO nanorods array to form an oxide semiconductor heterostructure. The crystalline phases and morphologies of the heterojunction materials were characterized using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy as well as Raman scattering. The PEC properties of the fabricated $Cu_2O/ZnO$ p-n heterojunction photoelectrode were evaluated by photocurrent conversion efficiency measurements under white light illumination. From the observed PEC current density versus voltage (J-V) behavior, the $Cu_2O/ZnO$ photoelectrode was found to exhibit a negligible dark current and high photocurrent density, e.g., $0.77mA/cm^2$ at 0.5 V vs $Hg/HgCl_2$ in a $1mM\;Na_2SO_4$ electrolyte, revealing an effective operation of the oxide heterostructure. In particular, a significant PEC performance was observed even at an applied bias of 0 V vs $Hg/HgCl_2$, which made the device self-powered. The observed PEC performance was attributed to some synergistic effect of the p-n bilayer heterostructure on the formation of a built-in potential, including the light absorption and separation processes of photoinduced charge carriers.

  • In this study, hierarchical mesoporous CuO spheres, ZnO flowers, and heterojunction CuO/ZnO nanostructures were fabricated via a facile hydrothermal method. The as-prepared materials were characterized in detail using various analytical methods such as powder X-ray diffraction, micro Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The obtained results are consistent with each other. The H2S-sensing characteristics of the sensors fabricated based on the CuO spheres, ZnO flowers, and CuO/ZnO heterojunction were investigated at different temperatures and gas concentrations. The sensor based on ZnO flowers showed a maximum response of ~141 at 225 ℃. The sensor based on CuO spheres exhibited a maximum response of 218 at 175 ℃, whereas the sensor based on the CuO/ZnO nano-heterostructure composite showed a maximum response of 344 at 150 ℃. The detection limit (DL) of the sensor based on the CuO/ZnO heterojunction was ~120 ppb at 150 ℃. The CuO/ZnO sensor showed the maximum response to H2S compared with other interfering gases such as ethanol, methanol, and CO, indicating its high selectivity.

  • An all-transparent photodetector was fabricated by structuring $Cu_2O$/ZnO/AZO/ITO on a glass substrate. The visible-range transmittance was as high as 80%, which ensures clear vision forhuman eyes. High-transparency metal conductive oxides (p-type $Cu_2O$ and n-type ZnO) were appliedto form the transparent p/n junction. The functional AZO layer was adopted to improve the transparent photodetector performance between the ZnO and ITO, improving the photoresponses because of its electrical conductivity. To clarify the AZO functionality, a comparator device was prepared without the AZO layer in the formation of $Cu_2O$/ZnO/ITO/Glass. The $Cu_2O$/ZnO/AZO/ITO device provided a rectifying ratio of 113.46, significantly better than the 9.44 of the $Cu_2O$/ZnO/ITO device. In addition, the $Cu_2O$/ZnO/AZO/ITO device's photoresponses at short wavelengths were better than those of the comparator. The functioning AZO layer provides ahigh-performing transparent Cu oxide photodetector and may suggest a route for the design of efficient photoelectric devices.

  • Transparent oxide semiconductors (TOSs) are. currently attracting attention for application to transparent electrodes in optoelectronic devices and active channel layers in thin-film transistors. One of the key issues for the realization of next generation transparent electronic devices such as transparent complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor thin-film transistors (CMOS TFTs), transparent wall light, sensors, and transparent solar cell is to develop p-type TOSs. In this talks, I will introduce issues and status related to p-type TOSs such as LnCuOQ (Ln=lanthanide, Q=S, Se), $SrCu_2O_2$, $CuMO_2$ (M=Al, Ga, Cr, In), ZnO, $Cu_2O$ and SnO. The growth and properties of SnO and Cu-based oxides and their application to electronic devices will be discussed.

  • Effects of chemical composition ($Cu^{2+}$, $K_4P_2O_7$ and additive concentrations) of baths on properties of Cu thin films electrodeposited from pyrophosphate copper bath were investigated. Current efficiency was increased to be near 100% with increasing $Cu^{2+}$ concentrations from 0.02 to 0.3M. Decrease of current efficiency was observed in the range of 1.5~1.8M $K_4P_2O_7$ concentration, but current efficiency of about 100% was measured in the ranges of both 0.9~1.3M and 2.1~2.4M. The change of additive concentration did not influenced current efficiency. Residual stress of electrodeposited Cu thin films was measured to be about 20 MPa below 0.15 M $Cu^{2+}$ concentration and increased with the increase of it to 0.25 M. Maximum residual stress of 120MPa was observed at 0.25M $Cu^{2+}$ concentration. On the other hand, residual stress decreased from 80 to near 0 MPa as $K_4P_2O_7$ concentration varied from 0.9 to 2.4M and but The change of additive concentration did not affected on residual stress. $Cu^{2+}$ and $K_4P_2O_7$ concentrations significantly affect on surface morphology of electrodeposited Cu thin films, but additive concentration slightly affected. From XRD analysis, the microstructures of electrodeposited Cu thin film was affected from the changes of $Cu^{2+}$ and $K_4P_2O_7$ concentrations, but not from that of additive concentration. Strong preferred orientation of (111) peak was observed with increasing $Cu^{2+}$ and $K_4P_2O_7$ concentrations.

  • We present the detection characteristics of nitrogen monoxide(NO) gas using p-type copper oxide(CuO) thin film gas sensors. The CuO thin films were fabricated on glass substrates by a sol-gel spin coating method using copper acetate hydrate and diethanolamine as precursors. Structural characterizations revealed that we prepared the pure CuO thin films having a monoclinic crystalline structure without any obvious formation of secondary phase. It was found from the NO gas sensing measurements that the p-type CuO thin film gas sensors exhibited a maximum sensitivity to NO gas in dry air at an operating temperature as low as $100^{\circ}C$. Additionally, these CuO thin film gas sensors were found to show reversible and reliable electrical response to NO gas in a range of operating temperatures from $60^{\circ}C$ to $200^{\circ}C$. It is supposed from these results that the p-type oxide semiconductor CuO thin film could have significant potential for use in future gas sensors and other oxide electronics applications using oxide p-n heterojunction structures.

  • In this study, In order to improve dielectric and piezoelectric properties of Lead-free piezoelectric ceramics, $0.95(K_{0.5}Na_{0.5})NbO_3-0.05Li(Sb_{0.8}Nb_{0.2})O_3+0.2\;wt%Ag_2O+0.4\;wt%MnO_2+Xwt%CuO$ were investigated as a function of the amount of CuO addition. With increasing the amount of CuO addition, density was increased up to 0.4 wt.% CuO and then decreased above. And also, electro mechanical coupling factor ($k_p$) was decreased. At the 0.4 wt% CuO added specimen sintered at $1020^{\circ}C$, $k_p$, Qm, density, dielectric constant (${\varepsilon}_r$) and $d_{33}$[pC/N] showed the optimal value of $4.37\;g/cm^3$, 0.354, 305, 645, and 144 pC/N respectively.
