  • In this work, in order to develop the ceramics with an excellent electrocaloric effect, $[Bi_{0.5}(Na_{0.84}K_{0.16})_{0.5}]TiO_3$ ceramics were fabricated by conventional solid state reaction method. The ceramics was observed as rhombohedral phase by X-ray diffraction patterns. To investigate the electrocaloric effect of the ceramics, P-E hysteresis loops were measured at various temperature. The temperature change ${\Delta}T$ of these ceramics was calculated using the Maxwell's relations. The maximum value of temperature change ${\Delta}T$ was obtained as 0.3 $1^{\circ}C$ at $165^{\circ}C$ under applied electric fields 45 kV/cm.

  • The apoptogenic effect of p-coumaric acid, a phenolic acid found in various edible plants, on human acute leukemia Jurkat T cells was investigated. Exposure of Jurkat T cells to p-coumaric acid (50-$150{\mu}M$) caused cytotoxicity and TdT-mediated dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL)-positive apoptotic DNA fragmentation along with Bak activation, ${\Delta}{\psi}m$ loss, activation of caspase-9, -3, -7, and -8, and PARP degradation in a dose-dependent manner. However, these apoptotic events were completely abrogated in Jurkat T cells overexpressing Bcl-2.Under these conditions, necrosis was not accompanied. Pretreatment of the cells with the pan-caspase inhibitor (z-VAD-fmk) could prevent p-coumaric acid-induced sub-$G_1$ peak representing apoptotic cells, whereas it failed to block ${\Delta}{\psi}m$ loss, indicating that the activation of caspase cascade was prerequisite for p-coumaric acid-induced apoptosis as a downstream event of ${\Delta}{\psi}m$ loss. FADD- and caspase-8-positive wild-type Jurkat T cell clone A3, FADD-deficient Jurkat T cell clone I2.1, and caspase-8-deficient Jurkat T cell clone I9.2 exhibited similar susceptibilities to the cytotoxicity of p-coumaric acid, excluding an involvement of Fas/FasL system in triggering the apoptosis. The apoptogenic activity of p-coumaric acid is more potent in malignant Jurkat T cells than in normal human peripheral T cells. Together, these results demonstrated that p-coumaric acid-induced apoptogenic activity in Jurkat T cellswas mediated by Bak activation, ${\Delta}{\psi}m$ loss, and subsequent activation of multiple caspases such as caspase-9, -3, -7, and-8, and PARP degradation, which could be regulated by anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2.

  • The melt-spun amorphous $Fe_{77-X}P_{13}C_4B_4Al_2Mo_X$(x=4~10) and $Fe_{82-X}P_XC_4B_4Al_2Mo_8$(x=9~15) alloys were found to exhibit a large supercooled liquid region(${\Delta}T_x$) exceeding 40 K before crystallization. The largest ${\Delta}T_x$ for the glassy alloys containing Mo reaches as large as 65 K for the $Fe_{69}P_{13}C_4B_4Al_2Mo_8$ alloy. The corrosion behavior of the amorphous $Fe_{77-X}P_{13}C_4B_4Al_2Mo_X$(x=4~15) and $Fe_(82-X)P_XC_4B_4Al_2Mo_8$ (x=9~17) alloys were examined by electrochemical measurements in 9M $H_2SO_4$ solution at 303 K. The addition of Mo(or P) for replacing some portion of Fe is effective in improving the corrosion resistance of the investigated Fe-based glassy alloys. They are spontaneously passivated and have a wide passive region with low passive current density.

  • This study investigated the effect of salt and glucono-${\delta}$-lactone (GdL) on the cold-set binding of restructured pork washed and pressurized at 200 MPa. Binding strength, PH, water holding capacity (WHC) and color were determined. NaCl improved pH, WHC and binding strength. GdL also increased binding strength while decreased WHC and pH significantly (p<0.05). However, low GdL level combined with NaCl showed high pH and WHC, compared to control. In color, NaCl decreased $L^*$-value with increasing $a^*$-value significantly (p<0.05). In contrast to NaCl, GdL increased $L^*$-value and decreased $a^*$-value. GdL tended to decrease $b^*$-value and significant differences were found when GdL was added above 1%. Pearson's correlation coefficients presented that NaCl had a significant effect on binding strength (0.6632) and lightness (-0.7330) while GdL had a significant correlation with all parameters barring binding strength. The results indicated that under washing and pressure treatments, GdL had a potential effect on cold-set binding with reducing NaCl concentration, especially when low GdL concentration combined with NaCl was added.

  • Purpose: This study was designed to compare the effects of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) and silver spike point (SSP) therapy on current perception threshold (CPT) and mechanical pain threshold (MPT). Methods: Forty-five healthy adult male and female subjects were studied. Fourteen of them were males and twenty-one were females. Subject were randomly assigned to receive; (1) TENS (80/120 Hz alternating frequency), (2) SSP (3 Hz), or (3) no treatment (control group). Electric stimulation was applied over LI4 and LI11 on acupuncture points of the left forearm for 30 minutes. CPT and MPT were recorded before and after electrical stimulation. The data were analyzed using linear mixed models, with group treated as a between subject factor and time a within-subject factor. Results: At 30 minutes after cessation of electrical stimulation the CPT of C fibers and A${\delta}$fibers was reduced in the TENS group that of C fibers was reduced in the SSP group (p<0.05). After cessation of electrical stimulation, the MPT of C fibers and A${\delta}$fibers increased in the TENS group, and that of A${\delta}$fibers increased in the SSP group (p<0.05). Conclusion: After TENS and SSP stimulation, MPT of C fibers and A${\delta}$fibers were selectively increased. In particular, the TENS group showed increases in both C and A${\delta}$fibers, while the SSP group showed increases only in A${\delta}$fibers.

  • Rates of reactions of methanesulfonyl chloride with various substituted anilines have been measured in methanol. Substituent effects in aniline are found to be linearly correlated with pKa(Bronsted relation with ${\beta}$ = 0.84) and ${\rho}$(Hammett equation with ${\rho}$ = -2.46) respectively. The results are interpreted in terms of degree of bond-formation at the transition state, which was found to have progressed relatively further. The rates for o-methylaniline deviated from the Bronsted plot established by meta and para substituted anilines because of a steric effect of ortho position in aniline. Activation parameters, ${\Delta}H^{\neq}$ and ${\Delta}S^{\neq}$ have also been determined. The enthalpy of activation showed a regular variation in that electron donating substituents in the p-substituted aniline decrease ${\Delta}H^{\neq}$ and increase the negative value of ${\Delta}S^{\neq}$.

  • The critical micelle concentration(CMC) and the counterion binding $constant(\beta)$ at the CMC of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide(CTAB) in a series of aqueous solutions containing medium chain-length n-alcohols(Propanol, Butanol, Pentanol and Hexanol) have been determined from the concentration dependence of electrical conductance at serveral temperature from $17^{\circ}C\;to\;41^{\circ}C.$ Thermodynamic parameters $({\Delta}G^o_m,\;{\Delta}H^o_m,\;{\Delta}S^o_m,\;and\;{\Delta}C_p)$ associated with micelle formation of CTAB have been also estimated from the temperature dependence of CMC and $\beta$ values, and the significance of these parameters and their relation to the theory of micelle formation have been considered. The results show that an enthalpy-entropy compensation effect is usually observed for the micellization of CTAB. The effects of n-alcohols on the micellar properties (CMC and $\beta$) of CTAB solutions have been also investigated. The addition of n-alcohol to the CTAB solution in a small quantity decreases the CMC value and the counterion binding constant $(\beta)$ at the CMC, but the addition of n-alcohol in an excessive quantity increases the CMC values on the conterary. These results have been explained in terms of the effect of the micelle-solubilized alcohol on the micellar surface charge density.

  • The study aimed to compare the whitening efficacy of a strip and gel containing 2.9% hydrogen peroxide, using a tooth whitening light activator. The whitening effect was compared through in vitro and in vivo studies. In the in vitro study, we used stained hydroxyapatite (HAP) specimens as artificial teeth. HAP specimens were made using HAP powder and polyvinyl alcohol solution, and stained by modified Stookey's method. A whitening gel and whitening strip were applied to the respective specimens for 20 minutes, with a light activator. The color changes were measured using a colorimeter. In the in vivo study, one group (test 1) used the gel with a light activator and the other group (test 2) used a strip with the same activator for 15 minutes a day, for four consecutive days. An organoleptic evaluation using a Vita shade guide and instrumental evaluation using a Shade eye-NCC (Shofu Co., Japan) were performed. The color change values (${\Delta}E^*$) in the in vitro study revealed the strip with the light activator to be more effective than the gel with the same activator (p<0.001). In the in vivo study, even though there was no significant difference between the groups with respect to the ${\Delta}E^*$, using either the Shade eye-NCC or the Vita shade guide, the change in yellowness (${\Delta}b^*$) was statistically significant (p=0.024). In conclusion, test 2 group that used 2.9% hydrogen peroxide strip with a light activator, showed a tendency towards increased whitening than test 1 group that used the gel with the same activator; however further studies are needed to validate the above finding.

  • We studied on the function and localization of fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe Nup97p, which is homologous to nucleoporin Nic96p in budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. There was no effect on growth and $poly(A)^{+}$ RNA distribution of cells when nup97 gene was overexpressed. However, the haploid ${\Delta}nup97::kan^{r}$ null mutants confirmed extensive $poly(A)^{+}$ RNA accumulation in the nucleus, abnormal DNA distribution, and cessation of growth when nup97 expression was repressed. We determined the subcellular localization of Nup97 tagged at the N terminus or the C terminus with GFP. Both fusions complemented growth defect of ${\Delta}nup97::kan^{r}$ null mutants. An integrated version of the nup97-GFP fusion was constructed at the nup97 locus. Nup97-GFP fusions expressed from its own promoter was localized at the nuclear periphery with a punctate appearance. These results suggest that Nup97p in fission yeast is also nucleoporin, which is involved in mRNA export.

  • PURPOSE. This in vitro study evaluated the effects of four different cements on the color attributes of a zirconia ceramic. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 40 zirconia ceramic disk specimens (0.5 mm thickness, 10 mm diameter, 0.1 mm cement space) were fabricated by a computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing system. The specimens were divided into 4 groups of 10 specimens and cemented to composite substrates using four different cements including: Glass Ionomer, Panavia F2.0, Zinc Phosphate, and TempBond. The $L^*$, $a^*$, and $b^*$ color attributes of the specimens were measured before and after cementation by a spectrophotometer. Additionally, ${\Delta}E$ values were measured to determine color changes for the groups and then compared with the perceptional threshold of ${\Delta}E=3.3$. Repeated Measures ANOVA, Tukey Post Hoc, Bonferroni, One-way ANOVA, and One-sample t-test tests were used to analyze the data. All tests were carried out at the 0.05 level of significance. RESULTS. Statistically significant differences were detected in the ${\Delta}E$ values for Zinc Phosphate (P<.0001) and TempBond (P<.0001) groups. However, there were no statistically significant differences in this respect for Glass Ionomer (P=.99) and Panavia F2.0 (P=1) groups. The means and standard deviations of the ${\Delta}E$ values for Glass Ionomer, Panavia F2.0, Zinc Phosphate, and Tempbond groups were $2.11{\pm}0.66$, $0.94{\pm}0.39$, $5.77{\pm}0.83$, and $7.50{\pm}1.16$ Unit, respectively. CONCLUSION. Within the limitations of this study, it was concluded that Zinc Phosphate and Tempbond cements affected the color attributes of the tested zirconia ceramic beyond the perceptional threshold. However, Glass Ionomer and Panavia F2.0 cements created acceptable color changes.
