Effects of ozone, ultraviolet and an organic acid-based disinfectant against porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus

  • A good level of biosecurity practice is important for efficient porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) control. In the current study, disinfecting ability of ozone against PRRS virus (PRRSV) was evaluated in comparison with ultraviolet (UV) and an organic acid-based disinfectant to assess the possible use of ozone for disinfecting farm vehicles, equipments, and materials to reduce the risk of new virus introduction. For in vitro evaluation, the levels of infectious virus and viral RNA were determined on the swabs collected from the floor surface of each room treated with either ozone, UV or the disinfectant up to 30 min after contamination with 100 mL of VR2332 ($10^5\;TCID_{50}/mL$). For in vivo evaluation, 3, 4-week old, PRRS-free pigs were housed into those rooms right after the last swab collection. Then the pigs in each room were injected intramuscularly with the corresponding swab samples collected at the last time point and pooled per each room. Although ozone, UV, and the disinfectant significantly reduced the levels of PRRSV RNA contamination, ozone was most effective in removing the viral RNA. In addition, the virus collected after at least 10 min exposure to ozone failed to replicate in pigs while the virus collected after treatment with UV and the disinfectant for 30 min still replicated in pigs. Based on the results, it was concluded that ozone is more effective in inactivating PRRSV as compared with UV and the organic acid-based disinfectant.

  • Despite the extensive investigations to understand the difference between ground-based and space-borne measurements, there still exist differences in total ozone (TO) measured at those two different platforms. Comparisons were carried out for the first time between TO data obtaiend from the ground based Dobson and Brewer spectrophotometers, and the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) on board EOS-Aura satellite in a megacity site in Northeast Asia. The TO values retrieved by the OMI-DOAS (Differential optical absorption spectroscopy) algorithm tend to be lower than those measured by the ground based sensors in spring and summer as well as the low solar zenith angle condition. We found that such underestimation of the OMI-DOAS TO is caused by tropospheric ozone underestimated by the OMI-DOAS algorithm when tropospheric ozone are significantly enhanced.

Relationship between Stratospheric Ozone and Solar Ultraviolet B Irradiance in Taegu, Korea

  • Solar ultraviolet-B (UV-B) irradiances incident on a horizontal surface at Taegu, Korea during 1996-1998 were calculated with 5 minute averages of measurements taken every 30 seconds by a broadband UV-B sensor. The average, maximum and minimum of daily UV-B dose were 11.31, 22.04 and 3.20kJ m$^{-2}$ day$^{-1}$ , respectively, for the measuring period. Variations in stratospheric ozone concentration measured from space explain 85% of changes in the daily UV-B dose. It was expected that decrease of 50 Du in stratospheric ozone cause increase of 24.1% in daily UV-B dose in this study.

  • In order to improve the optical properties of high yield pulp, bleached chemi-thermo-mechanical pulp (BCTMP) was produced from CTMP of Betula maximowicziana Regel by two staged ozone-hydrogen peroxide bleaching. This pulp was used for the evaluation of the improvement of optical properties, chemical characteristics of lignin in fiber, and the relationship between lignin and optical properties in fiber cell wall. By hydrogen peroxide treatment, the brightness was improved, but the post color number (PC No.) was not. There was little improvement on optical properties by ozone treatment, but his could be solved by using two staged ozone-hydrogen peroxide bleaching. The hydrogen peroxide treatment did not make nay change on chemical characteristics of lignin in cell wall, but by ozone treatment, it was found that the non-aromatic conjugated structure was existed in the surface of cell wall, but this could be removed by hydrogen peroxide treatment in two staged ozone-hydrogen peroxide treatment. Therefore, the optical properties was significantly improved due to the removal of non-aromatic conjugated structure.

  • With the degradation of water quality and, at the same time increased water usage, the sources of high quality, for examples, river/stream, municipal reservoir, wells, artisan and surface water, are diminishing. Therefore, the importance of water quality has been emphasized over the years through publications and various literature sources. Even though considerable research has resulted in significant strides for providing interpretive information and mitigation strategies for improvement of waters, the quality of which is still questionable. This study aims to propose a completely independent self-contained system for purifying waters, solar-powered ozone generator. It is a semi-permanent and cost effective environmental solution. Functions of ozone treatment are: 1) to maintain oxidative flexibility, 2) remove harmful chemicals, wastes, and other substances, and 3) prevent epizootic microbial outbreaks. Recent advances in technology have allowed the development of the practical, self-contained and independent solar powered device. Solar electrical producing panels that charge batteries are the key to using these systems anywhere electrical power is not available. This paper invites the readers to examine the problem and consider the viable, proven solution the solar powered ozone purifying system. This paper also introduces basic concept and background of solar powered ozone generators and examine its feasibility for improving water quality in rivers and streams.

Seasonal and Diurnal Variations of Surface Ozone at Ieodo in the East China Sea (이어도 해양과학기지의 오존농도의 계절변화와 일변화 특징)

  • We examined diurnal and seasonal variations of ozone ($O_3$) concentrations and its relation to meteorological parameters observed at the Ieodo Ocean Research Station ($32.07^{\circ}N$, $125.10^{\circ}E$, 36 m above sea level) during June 2003 and May 2005. Over the 2-year period, the mean ozone concentration was $49.5{\pm}15.5\;ppbv$. Ozone concentrations show great variability with a monthly mean up to 68.2 ppbv in May 2005 and seasonal variations with being highest in spring and fall, and lowest in summer. However, the amplitude of diurnal variation was less than ${\sim}4\;ppbv$ with a maximum at $3{\sim}4\;p.m.$ and minimum at $7{\sim}8\;a.m.$ HYSPLIT backward air trajectory indicated that the air masses with higher ozone came from the north or northwest and those with lower ozone arrived mainly via southerly or southeasterly. Ozone distributions at Ieodo Ocean Research Station were observed to be significantly impacted by long-range transport and regional scale air circulation.

A Study on the Enhancement of the Performance of Gas Separation Membranes by Ozone Treatment (오존처리를 이용한 기체분리막의 성능 향상에 관한 연구)

  • Gas permeation and separation characteristics of ozone treated polysulfone (PSF) membranes were investigated. The PSF is one of the most widely used commercial membranes. Ozone treatment of the PSF membrane was performed for certain hours by continuously supplying 5 vol.% ozone-containing oxygen to the chamber, in which the membrane samples were charged. The permselectivity of PSF increased with ozone treatment time, and it was found that one and half hour was enough to ozone treatment. Increase in the selectivity of the membrane for He/$N_2$, HY$N_2$, O:J$N_2$, COJ$CH_4$ by ozone treatment was found to be due to decrease in the permeability of gases with larger molecular size such as $N_2$ and $CH_4$ The decrease in the permeability of gases with smaller molecular size was negligible. The increase in the selectivities of the PSF by ozone treatment would be due to decrease in the free volume of the polymer because of the oxygen complexes generated by the reaction between ozone and the polymer.

  • Bacterial virus f2 and its RNA were examined to elucidate the mode of ozone utilizing sucrose density gradient analysis and electtron microscopic techniques. the inactivation kinetics of the virus f2 by ozonation showed that the viruses were inactivated during the first 5 sec of the reaction and were further inactivated at a slower rate during the next 10 min at 0.09 and 0.8mg/l ozone concentrations. The virus coat was broken by ozonation into many pieces of protein subunits and the adsorption of the viruses to the host pili was inversely related to the extent of the breakage of the virus. The viral RNA was released from the virus particles during ozone, but ozone inactivation of the RNA enclosed in the protein coat could not ruled out the possibility that the RNA was secondarily sheared by a reaction with the broken coat protein.

  • A survey regarding ozone abatement policies and measures was conducted for 230 residents in Seoul. The main survey results of public opinion indicated that it would be better to devise new effective plans of public relation to citizen, and that national strategies for the ozone pollution abatement should be reevaluated and made up for the weak point. Especially, it would be necessary to provide for citizens precise and/or specific information regarding ozone pollution issue and guideline how to reduce ozone pollution from the household.
