Alloys of Ti-43%Al-2%W-0.1%Si were oxidized isothermally and cyclically between $900^{\circ}C$ and$ 1050^{\circ}C$, and their oxidation characteristics were studied. During isothermal tests, the alloys oxidized slowly up to 100$0^{\circ}C$, but fast at $1050^{\circ}C$. Though the scale adherence was not good above $900^{\circ}C$, the alloys displayed better oxidation behavior than unalloyed TiAl alloys. The oxide scales consisted primarily of an outer $TiO_2$ layer, intermediate $Al_2$$O_3$-rich layer, and an inner mixed layer of (TiO$_2$$+Al_2$$O_3$). Tungsten was present mainly at the lower part of the oxide scale, while Si over the whole oxide scale.

Alloys of Ti-15Mo-5Zr-3Al(wt%) were oxidized in air between 700 and $900^{\circ}C$. It was found that the oxidation resistance is much better than that of either commercially available pure Ti-6Al-4V(wt%) alloys. The oxide scales were primarily composed of thick Ti-ox-ides which were formed by the inward diffusion of oxygen from the atmosphere. At higher temperatures a thin $\alpha$-$Al_2O_3$ layer was formed on Ti-oxides owing to the outward diffusion of Al from the base alloys. Molybdenum, the noblest metal among the alloy components, was predominantly present behind the oxide-substrate interface. Zirconium, an oxygen active metal, was present at both the oxide layer and the substrate.
As CMOS technology scales down, reliability is becoming an important concern for VLSI designers. This paper analyzes gate-oxide breakdowns (i.e., the time-dependent dielectric-breakdown (TDDB) aging effect) as a reliability issue for combinational circuits with 45-nm technology. This paper shows simulation results for the noise margin, delay, and power using a single inverter-chain circuit, as well as the International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS)'85 benchmark circuits. The delay and power variations in the presence of TDDB are also discussed in the paper. Finally, we propose a novel method to compensate for the logic failure due to dielectric breakdowns: We used a higher supply voltage and a negative ground voltage for the circuit. The proposed method was verified using the ISCAS'85 benchmark circuits.
The AISI 216L stainless steel with a composition of Fe-16Cr-6Ni-6Mn-1.7Mo (wt.%) was oxidized at $700{\sim}900^{\circ}C$ in air for 100 h. At $700^{\circ}C$, a thin $Mn_{1.5}Cr_{1.5}O_4$ oxide layer with a thickness of $0.4{\mu}m$ formed. At $800^{\circ}C$, an outer thin $Fe_2O_3$ oxide layer and a thick inner $FeCr_2O_4$ oxide layer with a total thickness of $30{\mu}m$ formed. The non-adherent scale formed at $800^{\circ}C$ was susceptible to cracking. At $900^{\circ}C$, an outer thin $Fe_2O_3$ oxide layer and a thick inner $Mn_{1.5}Cr_{1.5}O_4$ oxide layer formed, whose total thickness was $10{\sim}15{\mu}m$. The scales formed at $900^{\circ}C$ were non-adherent and susceptible to cracking. 216 L stainless steel oxidized faster than 316 L stainless steel, owing to the increment of the Mn content and the decrement of Ni content.
We studied oxidation behaviors of anti-oxidative Y-Cr oxide coated sol on ferritic steel for application of the Fe-Cr alloys as interconnectors of planar-type Solid Oxide Fuel Cells(SOFCs). In coated$YCrO_3$on the ferritic steel, the phases of $YCrO_3$,$Cr_2O_3$and $Mn_{1.5}Cr_{1.5}O_4$on the coated surface were detected, but iron base scales were not observed after oxidation at 80$0^{\circ}C$ for 40 h. The Mn-Cr oxide scales were grown with oxidation by diffusing components in the ferritic steel from inner. The Log(ASR/T) value that expresses electrical resistance of coated$YCrO_3$on the ferritic steel was -4.57~$-4.70{omega}cm^2K^{-1}$, lower in comparison with the one of the uncoated ferritic steel,$-3.99{omega}cm^2K^{-1}$. This indicates the applicability of Fe-l6Cr alloy as interconnector materials for SOFCs.
Intermetallics of Fe-28%Al($Fe_3Al$) and Fe-28%Al-4%Cr($Fe_3Al-4Cr$) were oxidized at 1073, 1273 and 1473k in air for up to 17 days. The oxidation resistance of$Fe_3Al-4Cr$ was basically similar to or better than that of $Fe_3Al$. The oxide scales formed on $Fe_3Al$ consisted essentially of pure ${\alpha}-AL_2O_3$, while those formed on $Fe_3Al-4Cr$ consisted of ${\alpha}-AL_2O_3$ having dissolved iron and chromium ions. The preferential outward diffusion of substrate elements to form the outer oxide layer led to the formation of Kirkendall voids at the oxide-matrix interface. The scales formed on $Fe_3Al(-4Cr)$ were thin and dense up to 1273K, but they spalled easily at 1473K, accompanied by more weight gains.
Gold-polypyrrole segment nanowires prepared using anodized aluminum oxide templates can be assembled into a curved superstructure that shows stimuli-induced contraction and expansion. The radius of the superstructures can be predicted using the simple equation suggested by J. K. Lim et al. (Nano Lett. 8, 4441 (2008)). The suggested equation, however, is valid only within the limiting condition in that the length of the polypyrrole segment is comparable to, or much longer than the gold segment. In this study, the original equation was modified to a new equation that is valid for all length scales of polypyrrole segments. The radius of the superstructures calculated using the modified equation was compared with the result calculated by the original equation, and the validity of the modified equation is discussed.
When metal oxides are exposed to chemical potential gradients, ions are driven to diffusive mass transport. During this transport process, the divergence of ionic fluxes offers the formation/annihilation of oxides. Therefore, the divergence of ionic flux may play an important role in the void formation in oxides. Kinetic equations were derived for describing chemical potential distribution, ionic fluxes and their divergence in oxides. The divergence was found to be the measure of void formation. Defect chemistry in scales is directly related to the sign of divergence and gives an indication of the void formation behavior. The quantitative estimation on the void formation was successfully applied to a growing magnetite scale in high temperature oxidation of iron at 823 K.
The high temperature corrosion properties of heat resistant steels were investigated in oxidation atmosphere including sulfur dioxide. The heat resistant steels of T22, T92, T122, T347HFG and T304H were evaluated at 620, $670^{\circ}C$ for 400 hours. The corrosion rates showed a decreasing tendency while chrome contents of those steels increased from 2 mass.% to 19 mass.%. The in crease in temperature increasement has an more effect on the corrosion rates of low chrome steels than high chrome steels. The weight gains of T22, T92, T304H at $670^{\circ}C$ were 3.7, 1.65, 1.23 times compared with those at $620^{\circ}C$. The external scale formed on T22 was composed of hematite, magnetite and Fe-Cr spinel and internal layer including iron oxide mixed with sulfide. The scales formed on T92, T122, T304H consisted of an outer layer of hematite and inner layer of chrome oxide and hematite. The proportion of chrome oxide at inner layer was increased when the chrome contents in heat resistant steels were increased.
Model alloys Fe-9Cr, Fe-20Cr and Fe-20Cr-20Ni (wt. %) with 0.1 and 0.2 % Si were exposed to $Ar-20CO_2-20H_2O$ gas at $818^{\circ}C$. The undoped alloys formed a thick iron-rich oxide scale. The additions of Si reduced scaling rates of Fe-9Cr to some extent but significantly suppressed the formation of iron oxide scales on Fe-20Cr and Fe-20Cr-20Ni. Carburisation also occurred in all undoped alloys, but not in Si-containing Fe-20Cr and Fe-20Cr-20Ni. Protection against carburisation was a result of the formation of an inner scale layer of silica.
