  • ZrB2 ceramic and ZrB2 ceramic composites with the addition of SiC, WC, and SiC/WC are successfully synthesized by a spark plasma sintering method. During high-temperature oxidation, SiC additive form a SiO2 amorphous outer scale layer and SiC-deplete ZrO2 scale layer, which decrease the oxidation rate. WC addition forms WO3 during the oxidation process to result in a ZrO2/WO3 liquid sintering layer, which is known to improve the anti-oxidation effect. The addition of SiC and WC to ZrB2 reduces the oxygen effective diffusivity by one-fifth of that of ZrB2. The addition of both SiC and WC shows the formation of a SiO2 outer dense glass layer and ZrO2/WO3 layer so that the anti-oxidation effect is improved three times as much as that of ZrB2. Therefore, SiC- and WC-added ZrB2 has a lower two-order oxygen effective diffusivity than ZrB2; it improves the anti-oxidation performance 3 times as much as that of ZrB2.

  • In order to investigate the exhaust structure and secondary oxidation of unburned hydrocarbon (HC) in the exhaust port, concentrations of individual HC species were measured in exhaust process, the degree of oxidation were obtained. Using a solenoid-driven fast sampling system on single-cylinder research engine fueled with 94% propane, the profiles of unburned hydrocarbons (HCs) and non-fuel HCs with a propane fueled engine were obtained from several locations in the exhaust port during the exhaust process. The sampled gases were analyzed using a gas chromatography of HC species with 4 or lesser carbon atoms. The change of total HC concentration and HC fractions of major components through the exhaust port were discussed. The results showed that non-uniform distribution of HC concentration existed around the exhaust valve and changed with time, and that the exhaust gas exhibited nearly uniform concentration profile at port exit, which was due to mixing and oxidation. Also it could be known that bulk gas with relatively high HC concentration came out through the bottom of the exhaust valve. To estimate the mass-based degree of HC oxidation in the exhaust port from measured HC concentrations, a 3-zone diagnostic cycle simulation and plug flow modeling were used. The degree of oxidation ranged between 26 % and 36 % corresponding to the engine operation conditions.

  • This study examines the effects of post-oxidation treatment on the microstructure and corrosion resistance of GC250 cast iron. The nitriding process was conducted at 570℃ for 180 minutes with a fixed nitriding potential (Kn) of 1.5, followed by post-oxidation at 450℃, 500℃, and 550℃ for 120 minutes. The post-oxidized specimens showed increased surface hardness and case depth compared to the nitrided specimens, with a maximum surface hardness of approximately 890 HV0.1. The oxidation process increased the thickness of the nitrided layer by more than 3 ㎛, with the oxide layer thickness reaching up to 2.5㎛ as the oxidation temperature increased. XRD analysis identified the presence of ε-phase, γ'-phase, and Fe3O4 phase on the surface. Polarization tests revealed that the specimen treated at the highest oxidation temperature had a corrosion current density of 20.26 ㎂/cm2 and a corrosion potential of -0.22V, indicating enhanced corrosion resistance compared to the nitrided specimen. This improvement is attributed to the formation and increased thickness of the oxide layer, which enhances corrosion resistance. In conclusion, the oxide layer formed through post-oxidation treatment significantly improves the corrosion resistance of GC250 cast iron, with the effect becoming more pronounced at higher oxidation temperatures.

  • In this study, characteristics of the problem solving process of the balancing redox equations was ana-lyzed by mental capacity and problem solving methods, and the pertinent teaching and learning guidance for oxidation-reduction unit was suggested. Participants were 79 senior high school students and 57 science high school students. Tests were conducted to measure the mental capacity, the understanding of the oxidation-reduction concepts and the com-pletion of the balancing redox equations. The framework was made to find the patterns of failure and success. As the analysis of the influence on the performance of mental capacity, understanding of the oxidation-reduction concepts, and problem solving methods, students who had lower understanding of oxidation-reduction concepts selected the trial and error method, and their performance were influenced by mental capacity. The students that had higher understanding of the oxidation-reduction concepts had good performance by using oxidation number method regardless of their mental capacity. As the results of analysis for the patterns, the success patterns of solving the problems, those of mostly the sci-ence high school students, were the cases of using oxidation number method well and lessening problem solving steps. The patterns of failure in solving problems by using trial and error method showed that students had mistakes in cal-culating, errors in making unknown equations, no consideration for all variables, or stopped solving the complicated problems. The patterns of failure in solving problems by using oxidation number method showed that many students had wrong oxidation number or no consideration for mass and charge balance.

  • Effect of Cu addition on oxide growth of Al-7 mass%Mg alloy at high temperature was investigated. As-cast microstructures of Al-7 mass%Mg and Al-7 mass%Mg-1 mass%Cu alloys showed α-Al dendrites and area of secondary particles. The 1 mass%Cu addition into Al-7 mass%Mg alloy formed Mg32(Al, Cu)49 ternary phase with β-Al3Mg2. The total fraction of two Mg-containing phases in Cu-added alloy was higher than the β-Al3Mg2 fraction in Cu-free alloy. From measured weight gains depending on time at 500℃ under an air atmosphere, it was shown that all samples exhibited significant weight gains depending on time. Al-7mass%Mg-1mass%Cu alloy showed the relatively increased oxidation rate when compared with Cu-free alloy. All the oxidized cross-sections throughout the entire oxidation time showed coarse and dark areas regarded as oxides grown from the surface to inside, but bigger oxidized areas were formed in the Al-7mass%Mg-1mass%Cu alloy containing higher fraction of Mg-based phases in the as-cast microstructure. As a result of compositional analysis on the oxide clusters, it was found that the oxide clusters contained Mg-based oxides formed through internal oxidation during a long time exposure to oxidizing environments.

  • 1 kV high-voltage GaN Schottky diode is realized using GaN-on-Si template by oxidizing Ni-Schottky contact. The Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) analysis revealed the formation of $NiO_x$ at the top of Schottky contact. The Schottky contact was changed to from Ni/Au to Ni/Ni-Au alloy/Au/$NiO_x$ by oxidation. Ni diffusion into AlGaN improves the Schottky interface and the trap-assisted tunneling current. In addition, the reverse leakage current and the isolation-leakage current are efficiently suppressed by oxidation. The isolation-leakage current was reduced about 3 orders of magnitudes. The reverse leakage current was also decreased from 2.44 A/$cm^2$ to 8.90 mA/$cm^2$ under -100 V-biased condition. The formed group-III oxides ($AlO_x$ and $GaO_x$) during the oxidation is thought to suppress the surface leakage current by passivating surface dangling bonds, N-vacancies and process damages.

  • The objective of this research is to investigate the electrochemical oxidation process for nitrogen removal in wastewater involving chloride ion and nitrogen compounds. The process experiment of electrochemical oxidation was conducted by using the stainless steel tube type reactor and the $Ti/IrO_2$ as anode. Free chlorine production and current efficiency variation for total nitrogen removal was compared depending on whether electrolyte is added, and the nitrogen type distribution under an operating condition. When chloride was added as electrolyte, it was found that production of free chlorine increased and the concentration of the chloride decreased as retention time passed. The concentration of chloride in influent decreased from 1,660 to 1,198 mg/L at the current density of $6.7A/dm^2$, while concentration of free chlorine increased to 132 mg/L. Current efficiency in removal of ammonium nitrogen was increased when chloride was dosed as electrolyte. It was observed that ammonium nitrogen was oxidized to nitrite and nitrate through electrochemical oxidation and that the concentration of total nitrogen in influent was reduced from 22.58 to 4.00 mg/L at the short retention time of 168 seconds through the electrochemical oxidation of nitrogen.

  • Contact materials are widely used as electrical parts. Ag-Cd alloy has a good wear resistance and stable contact resistance. But the Cd exists as coarse oxide in alloy so it have an effect on mechanical properties badly. Moreover, the Cd is an injury material to environment. Nowadays, the use of Cd is strictly restricted. Because of these disadvantage, Ag-Sn-In alloy has been developed. In Ag-Sn-In alloy, the Sn : In ratio affects the internal oxidation properties, such as the formation of the oxide layer on the surface. In this work, we changed and optimized the Sn : In ratio variety for good internal oxidation properties. We have shown that a internal oxidation process did not fully completed when the Sn : In ratio is over 4 : 1 because of the Sn oxide layer at surface. The increase of In decelerates the formation of Sn oxide layer.

  • The purpose of this research is to evaluate the removal efficiencies of COD$\_$Cr/ and color for the dyeing wastewater by the different dosages of ferrous solution and H$_2$O$_2$ in Fenton process. In the case of H$_2$O$_2$ divided dosage for the Fenton's reagent 7:3 of H$_2$O$_2$ was more effective than 3:7 to remove COD$\_$Cr/ and color. The results showed that COD$\_$Cr/ was mainly removed by Fenton coagulation, where the ferric ions are formed in the initial step of Fenton reaction. On the other hand color was removed by Fenton oxidation rather than Fenton coagulation. The removal mechanism of COD$\_$Cr/ and color was mainly coagulation by ferrous ion, ferric ion and Fenton oxidation. The removal efficiencies were dependent on the ferric ion amount at the beginning of the reaction. However, the final removal efficiency of COD$\_$Cr/ and color was in the order of Fenton oxidation, ferric ion coagulation and ferrous ion coagulation. The reason of the highest removal efficiency by Fenton oxidation can be explained by the chain reactions with ferrous solution, ferric ion and hydrogen peroxide.

  • Magnesium alloy have good physical properties such as good castability, good vibration absorption, high strength/weight ratios. Despite the desirable properties, the poor resistance of Mg alloy impedes their use in many various applications. Therefore, magnesium alloy require surface treatment to improve hardness, corrosion and wear resistance. Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) is one the surface treatment methods to form oxide layer on Mg alloy in alkali electrolyte. In comparison with Anodizing, there is environmental process having higher hardness and faster deposition rate. In this study, the characteristics of oxide film were examined after coating the AZ31 Mg alloy through the PEO process. We changed concentration of sodium aluminate into $K_2ZrF_6$, KF base electrolyte. The morphologies of the coating layer were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Corrosion resistance also investigated by potentiodynamic polarization analysis. As a result, propertiy of oxide layer were changed by concentration of sodium aluminate. Increasing with concentration of sodium aluminate in electrolyte, the oxidation layer was denser and the pore size was smaller on the surface.
