  • This paper proposes a new approach for the ant-swing control of overhead cranes. The proposed control consists of a model-based anti-swing control scheme and a practical path planning scheme. The anti-swing control scheme is designed based on the Lyapunov stability theorem; the proposed control does not require the usual constraints of small load mass, small load swing, slow hoisting speed, and small hoisting distance, but guarantees asymptotic stability while keeping all internal signals bounded. The path planning scheme is designed based on the concepts of minimum-time control and anti-swing control; the proposed path planning generates near-minimum-time trajectories independently of hoisting speed and distance. The effectiveness of the proposed control is shown by computer simulation.

  • Industrial cranes are indispensable equipment in heavy industry. However, unwanted vibrations in cranes often cause accidents. Input shaping is widely accepted as a useful tool for removing residual vibration in cranes. A unity magnitude zero vibration (UMZV) input shaper is often used for cranes driven by on-off-type motors. However, although a UMZV input shaper minimizes residual vibration, the input shaper cannot prevent the crane from moving slightly further than expected from the original command. This paper describes an improved method of input shaping that can compensate for position inaccuracies, as well as remove the residual vibration of cranes. Experiments were performed to validate the proposed input-shaping method, illustrated through numerical simulations.

  • This paper presents the swing motion analysis of the container crane headblock with the passive control device using hydraulic motors and anti-swing ropes. The device hauls at the headblock to opposite direction of its swing motion using the tension difference between anti-swing ropes connected to the headblock. To consider this control mechanism, the headblock is modelled as the rigid bar suspended by two hoist ropes at the overhead trolley and its non-linear equation of motion is derived using Lagrange's equation. Some numerical experiments using the equation are carried out to investigate the swing motion characteristics of the headblock under the variation of geometric relation among the cargo handling components and to evaluate the performance of the anti-swing device.

  • This paper addresses design procedure and testing results of a closed-loop motion control of the cranes. When the object is stopped at the desired position, swinging occurs, and such swinging deteriorates the safety and efficiency of the operation of the crane. Therefore, in this paper, the cascade anti-swing and trolley position feedback controller are designed. Anti-swing controller rapidly eliminates swinging of object and position feedback controller reduces the trolley position error. The performance of this controller is investigated through the computer simulation and experiment. From the results of a series of computer simulations and experiments it can be concluded that proposed controller effectively reduces swinging of the object and trolley position error, which shows this controller can be used as an effective tool for the precise control of overhead cranes.

  • In practical control area, there are many examples with multiple objectives which may conflict or compete with each other like overhead crane control, automatic train operation, and refuse incinerator plant control, etc. These kinds of control problems are called multiobjective control problems, where it is difficult to provide the desired performance with control strategies based on single-objective optimization. Because the conventional control theories usually treat the control problem as the single objective optimization problem , the methods are not adequate to treat the multiobjective control problems. Particularly, in case of large scale systems or ill-defined systems, the multiple obj..

  • Various different types of yard cranes are used in container terminals. Examples are rubber tired gantry cranes, rail mounted gantry cranes, overhead bridge cranes, dual rail-mounted gantry cranes, and automated stacking cranes. The kinematics and handling characteristics of these yard cranes are different from each other. Ttiis study analyses charactehstics of generic types of yard cranes which represent various yard cranes m practice Demg used in several types of block layouts, Considering specifications of yard cranes and block layouts, expected cycle times and variances of the cycle time are estimated for different handling activities.

  • This paper presents an LMI-based method to design an adaptive sliding mode controller for a class of uncertain systems. In terms of LMIs an existence condition of a sliding surface is derived. And an adaptive switching feedback control law to guarantee the asymptotic stability as well as to estimate the norm bound of disturbances is proposed. Finally, a numerical design example for controlling a overhead crane model is given to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • Remote Cask Grappling and Lid Unbolting Device (RCGLUD) is developed as a dedicated device capable of performing complete procedure of handling nuclear spent fuel transport cask. Since RCGLUD is suspended to an overhead crane, its body should undergo prolonged vibration upon actuation in rotational direction and it becomes difficult to achieve precise grappling of the cask. Therefore, this paper presents an adaptation of input shaping technique to effectively suppress the rotational vibration of RCGLUD and achieve precise positioning in rotational direction. This technique has a practical merit in that it requires only the information on the system natural frequency and the damping ratio. Its performance is verified by both simulation and experimental studies, and revealed that the method is also insensitive to modeling error.

  • In view of the lack of efficient coordination of interdependent task in the collaborative design system, the mechanisms for temporal and resource coordination problems are established based on Petri Nets, respectively. Both of the mechanisms are encapsulated and implemented in the coordination component so as to increase the flexibility and acceptability of the system. We model the CSCW system based on Petri Nets for simulation, analysis and optimization. A case study on the overhead traveling crane is given to demonstrate and validate our theory.
