Seismic performance of steel plate shear walls with variable column flexural stiffness

  • In the present study, the behavior of steel plate shear walls (SPSW) with variable column flexural stiffness is experimentally and numerically investigated. Altogether six one-bay one-story specimens, three moment resisting frames (MRFs) and three SPSWs, were designed, fabricated and tested. Column flexural stiffness of the first specimen pair (one MRF and one SPSW) corresponded to the value required by the design codes, while for the second and third pair it was reduced by 18% and 36%, respectively. The quasi-static cyclic test result indicate that SPSW with reduced column flexural stiffness have satisfactory performance up to 4% story drift ratio, allow development of the tension field over the entire infill panel, and cause negligible column "pull-in" deformation which indicates that prescribed minimal column flexural stiffness value, according to AISC 341-10, might be conservative. In addition, finite element (FE) pushover simulations using shell elements were developed. Such FE models can predict SPSW cyclic behavior reasonably well and can be used to conduct numerical parametric analyses. It should be mentioned that these FE models were not able to reproduce column "pull-in" deformation indicating the need for further development of FE simulations with cyclic load introduction which will be part of another paper.

Evaluation of Brinell Hardness of Coated Surface Using Finite Element Analysis: Part 1 - A Feasibility Study (유한요소해석에 의한 코팅면의 브리넬 경도 평가: 제1보 - 타당성 연구)

  • The friction surfaces of mechanical parts are heat-treated or coated with hard materials to minimize wear. Increasing the hardness is a very useful way to reduce abrasive wear. The general Brinell hardness test, which is widely used for metallic materials, is not suitable because it hardly shows any change in hardness when coated with thin films. In this study, we propose a basis for the application of the new Brinell hardness test method to the coated friction surface. An indentation analysis of the rigid sphere and elastic-perfectly plastic materials is performed using a commercial finite element analysis software. The results indicate that their loadto-diameter ratio is the same; the Brinell hardness test method can be applied even when the indenter diameter is on the micrometer scale. In the case of hard coating, it is difficult to calculate Brinell hardness using the diameter of the indentation, but the study revealed, for the first time, that it can be calculated using the depth of the indentation regardless of coating. The change in hardness owing to thin film coating over a wide load range implies that the hardness evaluation method is appropriate. Additional studies on various properties related to the substrate and coating material are required to apply the proposed method.

  • Extensive laboratory tests were conducted to investigate the effect of load amplitude, geogrid position, and number of geogrid layers, thickness of ballast layer and clay stiffness on behavior of reinforced ballast layer and induced strains in geogrid. A half full-scale railway was constructed for carrying out the tests, the model consists of two rails 800 mm in length with three wooden sleepers (900 mm × 10 mm × 10 mm). The ballast was overlying 500 mm thickness clay in two states, soft and stiff state. Laboratory tests were conducted to investigate the response of the ballast and the clay layers where the ballast was reinforced by a geogrid. Settlement in ballast and clay, soil pressure and pore water pressure induced in the clay were measured in reinforced and unreinforced ballast cases. It was concluded that the effect of frequency on the settlement ratio is almost constant after 500 cycles. This is due to that the total settlement after 500 cycles, almost reached its peak value, which means that the ballast particles become very close to each other, so the frequency is less effective for high contact particles forces. The average maximum vertical stress and pore water pressure increased with frequency.

  • The usage of fiber-reinforced polymer materials increases in the construction sector due to their advantages in terms of high mechanical strength, lightness, corrosion resistance, low density and high strength/density ratio, low maintenance and painting needs, and high workability. In this study, it is aimed to improve mechanical properties of GFRP box profiles, produced by pultrusion method, by filling the polymer concrete into them. Within the scope of study, hybrid use of polymer concrete produced with GFRP box profiles was investigated. Hybrid pressure and bending specimens were produced by filling polymer concrete (polyester resin manufactured with natural sand and stone chips) into GFRP box profiles having different cross-sections and dimensions. Behavior of the produced hybrid members was investigated under bending and compression tests. Hollow GFRPxx profiles, polymer-filled hybrid members, and nominative polymeric concrete specimens were tested as well. The behavior of the specimens under pressure and bending tests, and their load bearing capacities, deformations and changes in toughness were observed. According to the test results; It was deduced that hybrid design has many advantages over its component materials as well as superior physical and mechanical properties.

EEG based Cognitive Load Measurement for e-learning Application (이러닝 적용을 위한 뇌파기반 인지부하 측정)

  • This paper describes the possibility of human physiological data, especially brain-wave activity, to detect cognitive overload, a phenomenon that may occur while learner uses an e-learning system. If it is found that cognitive overload to be detectable, providing appropriate feedback to learners may be possible. To illustrate the possibility, while engaging in cognitive activities, cognitive load levels were measured by EEG (electroencephalogram) to seek detection of cognitive overload. The task given to learner was a computerized listening and recall test designed to measure working memory capacity, and the test had four progressively increasing degrees of difficulty. Eight male, right-handed, university students were asked to answer 4 sets of tests and each test took from 61 seconds to 198 seconds. A correction ratio was then calculated and EEG results analyzed. The correction ratio of listening and recall tests were 84.5%, 90.6%, 62.5% and 56.3% respectively, and the degree of difficulty had statistical significance. The data highlighted learner cognitive overload on test level of 3 and 4, the higher level tests. Second, the SEF-95% value was greater on test3 and 4 than on tests 1 and 2 indicating that tests 3 and 4 imposed greater cognitive load on participants. Third, the relative power of EEG gamma wave rapidly increased on the 3rd and $4^{th}$ test, and signals from channel F3, F4, C4, F7, and F8 showed statistically significance. These five channels are surrounding the brain's Broca area, and from a brain mapping analysis it was found that F8, right-half of the brain area, was activated relative to the degree of difficulty. Lastly, cross relation analysis showed greater increasing in synchronization at test3 and $4^{th}$ at test1 and 2. From these findings, it is possible to measure brain cognitive load level and cognitive over load via brain activity, which may provide atimely feedback scheme for e-learning systems.

A Design of High PSRR LDO over Wide Frequency Range without External Capacitor (외부 커패시터 없이 넓은 주파수 범위에서 높은 PSRR 갖는 LDO 설계)

  • This paper describes a high PSRR low-dropout(LDO) linear regulator for wide frequency range without output-capacitor. Owing to both of the cascode compensation technique and the current buffer compensation technique in nested Miller compensation loop, the proposed LDO not only maintaines high stability but also achieves high PSRR over wide frequency range with reasonable on-chip capacitances. Since the external capacitor is removed by the proposed compensation techniques, the cost for pad is eliminated. The designed LDO works under the input voltage range from 2.5V to 4.5V and provides up to 10mA load current with the output voltage of 1.8V. The LDO was implemented with 0.18um CMOS technology and the area is 300um X 120 um. The measured power supply rejection ratio(PSRR) is -76dB and -43dB at DC and 1MHz, respectively. The operating current is 25uA.

A study on the characteristics of planar type inductively coupled plasma and its applications on the selective oxide etching (평면형 유도결합 플라즈마의 특성 및 선택적 산화막 식각 응용에 관한 연구)

  • The electrical characteristics and the plasma parameters of planar inductively coupled plasmas (ICP) have been measured. The resistance of the total load including the coil and the plasma varied from 1 to 4 W and the inductance from 1.5 m to 2 mH when the power was changed from 100 to 1000 W and the pressure from 1 to 10 mTorr. The density of electron measured by Langmuir probe was over $10^{11}/\textrm{cm}^3$ and the temperature varied between 3 and 5 eV as the process conditions were changed. Bias modulation was adopted as a new method to improve the selectivity of $SiO_2$on Si in $C_4F_8$ (octafluorocyclobutane) plasma. The selectivity was improved as the duty ratio decreased, but the etch rate of $SiO_2$decreased below 400$\AA$/min. $H_2$addition to $C_4F_8$ plasma showed that the etch selectivity could be higher than 50 and the etch rate of $SiO_2$over 2000$\AA$/min when 60% $H_2$was added.

On the direct strength and effective yield strength method design of medium and high strength steel welded square section columns with slender plate elements

  • The ultimate carrying capacity of axially loaded welded square box section members made of medium and high strength steels (nominal yield stresses varying from 345 MPa to 460 MPa), with large width-to-thickness ratios ranging from 35 to 70, is analyzed by finite element method (FEM). At the same time, the numerical results are compared with the predicted results using Direct Strength Method (DSM), modified DSM and Effective Yield Strength Method (EYSM). It shows that curve a, rather than curve b recommended in Code for design of steel structures GB50017-2003, should be used to check the local-overall interaction buckling strength of welded square section columns fabricated from medium and high strength steels when using DSM, modified DSM and EYSM. Despite all this, EYSM is conservative. Compared to EYSM and modified DSM, DSM provides a better prediction of the ultimate capacities of welded square box compression members with large width-thickness ratios over a wide range of width-thickness ratios, slenderness ratios and steel grades. However, for high strength steels (nominal yield strength greater than 460 MPa), the numerical and existent experimental results indicate that DSM overestimates the load-carrying capacities of the columns with width-thickness ratio smaller than 45 and slenderness ratio less than 80. Further, for the purpose of making it suitable for a wider scope, DSM has been modified (called proposed modified DSM). The proposed modified DSM is in excellent agreement with the numerical and existing experimental results.

International Comparison of Railway Freight Performance (국가별 철도물류 운영현황 비교연구)

  • This study aims to quantify the railway freight performance using various indicators, to compare it over many countries, and to evaluate efficiency of railway freight in Korea. The indicators developed in this study was classified into two categories; country-specific and company-specific indicator. The former includes freight train density, average gross train load and average haul while the latter contains revenue/ton-km, ratio of operating costs to revenue, revenue per employee, ton-km per employee, costs per ton-km and ratio of labor costs to total operating costs. The results of this study shows that Korail performance is in low efficiency due to multi-frequency small amounts transport. The productivity of railway freight in Korea represented as ton-km per employee appears to be lower than that of other oversea companies considered in this study.

Analysis of Weight Reduction Effect of Void Slab on Long and Short Term Deflections of Flat Plates (플랫 플레이트의 장단기 처짐에 대한 중공 슬래브의 자중저감 효과 분석)

  • The RC flat plate system has benefits such as a short construction time, an improvement of workability and a floor height reduction. In the case of long span slab, cracking damages and large deflections tend to occur due to the low flexural stiffness of flat plates. Specially, over-loading by self-weight of slab during construction increases short and long-term deflections. These problems may be solved by the use of void slab that has benefits of the reduced self-weight. In this study, to analyze an effect of self-weight reduction of void slab on slab deflections, the parametric study is performed. Including variable conditions such as a concrete strength, a slab construction cycle, the number of shored floors, a compressive reinforcement ratio and a tensile reinforcement ratio, slab construction loads and deflections are calculated by considering the construction stages, concrete cracking, and long-term effects. The short-term deflections during construction and the long-term deflections after construction of both of normal and void slabs are compared and the effects of void slab on the reduction of slab deflections are analyzed.
