  • Themo-mechanical analysis was carried out using the finite element method for the steel shell of a cupola furnace. When the outer surface of the shell was cooled with water to within the temperature range of 35-80 ℃ during operation of the cupola, the inner surface of the shell was expected to exhibit a temperature of 65-248 ℃ based on heat transfer analysis. The shell was also expected to have an equivalent stress range of 100-280 MPa in the outer surface over the temperature range examined. Upon cooling the shell to obtain an outer surface temperature <80 ℃, the maximum equivalent stress of the shell did not exceed the yield strength. Although the temperature of the outer surface varied between 35 and 80 ℃ periodically due to the cooling control problem, the fatigue stress at the outer surface of the shell was calculated to be within the fatigue strength. During a non-operational period to examine the system between furnace operations, the thermal stress presented in the shell was sufficiently low to reach the desired yield strength and fatigue limit.

  • Magnetic shielding effect of cylinderical ahields made of commericial amorphous ribbons has been studied. The shell-arrangement-order of double shell shield has been found to show a striking differencein shielding factor. In low applied field region, a 2605CO-2705M-shield (outer shell: 2605CO, inner shell: 2705M) yields two times higher shielding factor than a 2705M-2605CO-shield (outer shell: 2705M, inner shell: 2605CO). The reasons are as follows: In case of 2605CO-2705M-shield, the outer shell is not easily saturated and effectively shields the applied field. In addition, the inner shell shows high shielding factor in the field shielded by the outer shell. In case of 2705M-2605CO-shield, the outer shell is saturated at very low-field as well as the inner shell shows low shielding factor in the field shielded by the outer shell.

  • As the energy consumed in building area has occupied a lot when looking into energy usage weights in area over the world, energy reduction building, eco-friendly architecture comes to the fore in the modern architecture. Discussions on the eco-friendly architecture have various concept definitions and targets to be achieved. The architectural works of Norman Foster are expressed as high-tech buildings using iron, glass, etc. in appearance, but they appear as those buildings with low energy load by analyzing environmental conditions from initial design stage that each building has, utilizing natural energy with design of outer shell and applying proper technical system. Thus, this study aims at providing basic data of outer shell planning through eco-friendly element technologies by considering pattern and outer shell design of buildings, principles of eco-friendly building plan as an eco-friendly building planning technique of Norman Foster as an example of plans to utilize building pattern, outer shell design and natural environments, in order to utilize passive measures as much as possible to increase energy saving methods and increase comfort by analyzing element technologies in the eco-friendly architecture in line with the modern flow.

  • This paper describes the application of a coupled finite element-boundary element method to obtain the steady-state response of a hydrophone. The particular structure considered is a flooded piezoelectric spherical shell. The hydrophone is three-dimensionally simulated to transduce an incident plane acoustic pressure onto the outer surface of the sonar spherical shell to electrical potentials on inner and outer surfaces of the shell. The acoustic field formed from the scattered sound pressure is also simulated. And the displacement of the shell caused by the externally incident acoustic pressure is shown in temporal motion. The coupled FE-BE method is described in detail.

  • Forming tool design is carried out for a manufacturing a outer shell structure of the nozzle extension of regenerative cooling thrust chamber. The method which manufactures outer shell structure of nozzle extension is a metal forming process using thin plate. Because the configuration of outer shell structure is changed after forming process by springback effect, the outer shell structure can't be exactly formed with the same forming tool as configuration of the nozzle extension. Therefore forming tool design considering springback effect is necessary for manufacturing the outer shell structure of the nozzle extension. In this study, new designed forming tool configuration was generated to decrease the errors between nozzle contour and formed structure. The analysis results show that the errors between nozzle contour and formed structure is significantly decreased using the new designed forming tool.

  • The egg shell of the tropical tasar silkworm, Antheraea mylitta is formed from the substances secreted by the follicular epithelium during the late vitellogenic stage. TEM study reveals the inner travecular and outer lamellar layer of chorion. The travecular layer is composed of the innermost wax layer, inner and outer chorionic layer. The inner and outer chorionic layers are connected to each other by vertical pillers forming of cavities. The lamellar layer is perforated by the aeropyles. SEM study reveals the differentiation of an anterior surface of the egg shell into four zones-micropylar, edge, aeropyles crown and disc zone. In the mycosis infected eggs the aeropyles and egg-shell surface are fully packed with the hyphae of the fungus, Aspergillus sydowi blocking of plastron respiration and causing the death of developing embryo so that mycosis infected eggs become sterile.

  • There is world wide concern for safety of nuclear power installations after the terrorist attack on World Trade Center in 2001 and several other civilian structures in the last decade. The nuclear containment structure in many countries is a double shell structure (outer shell a RCC and inner a prestressed concrete). The outer reinforced concrete shell protects the inner shell and is designed for external loading like impact and blast. A comparative study of non-linear response of reinforced concrete nuclear containment cylindrical shell subjected to impact of an aircraft (Phantom) and explosion of different amounts of blast charges have been presented here. A material model which takes into account the strain rate sensitivity in dynamic loading situations, plastic and visco-plastic behavior in three dimensional stress state and cracking in tension has been developed earlier and implemented into a finite element code which has been validated with published literature. The analysis has been made using the developed software. Significant conclusions have been drawn for dissimilarity in response (deflections, stresses, cracks etc.) of the shell for impact and blast loading.

  • A study on the forming characteristics of outer shell structure for thrust chamber nozzle extension has been performed. In order to identify anisotropy of cold rolled sheet metal, three types of tensile specimens according to the direction to the sheet rolling axis were prepared and tested, and Landford's values were obtained using the results and applied to structural analysis. Forming characteristics of the outer shell structure of the nozzle extension are investigated through manufacturing and forming of the full scale outer shell structures, and strain values obtained by the forming processes are compared to the numerical analysis results. The results obtained by this study will be utilized to design forming tools and processes for manufacturing other outer shell structures which have a bigger expansion area ratio.

  • Using the spectroscopic data secured with the Hamilton Echelle Spectrograph attached to a 3-m telescope at the Lick Observatory, we derived the expansion velocities from various line profiles in the 3600 $\AA$ to 10,000 $\AA$ based on the full width at half maximum and double peak of the high dispersion line profiles. The symmetrical shapes of the permitted line profiles indicate that the permitted line zone is symmetrical e.g., a spherical shell or bipolar + torus structures, which might be evidence of relatively recent ejection from the central star. Most other stronger forbidden lines might be coming from a main shell which appears as a bilateral symmetrical morphology, seen in HST and other ground-based telescopic images. The overall expansion velocities of this main shell structure that are responsible for most lines, seem to show the Hubble type expansion, i.e., accelerating shell. The faster expansion velocities of the permitted OII, NII, NIII and perhaps CII lines that do not suit to the Hubble type expansion, imply the existence of a somewhat smaller inner shell inside the outer main shell. We conclude that the nebular shell consists of a swiftly expanding inner shell and an outer normal shell excited by a central star of about 55,000K. The former compact zone appears to be responsible for the permitted C, N, and O lines while the latter extended shell appears to be responsible for H, He, and forbidden lines. We present some evidence that NGC 6833 be a member of the Galactic halo.

  • According to the wear detection history for the steam generator tubes in the nuclear power plant, the outer tubes inside the steam generator have more problems on the flow-induced vibration than inner tubes. Many researchers and engineers have used a specified added mass coefficient for a given tube array during the design stage of the steam generator even though the coefficient is not constant for entire tube in cylindrical shell. The aim of this study is to find out the distribution of added mass coefficients for each tube along the radial location. When numbers of tubes inside a cylindrical shell are increased, values of added mass coefficients are also increased. Added mass coefficients at outer tubes are less than those of inner tubes and they are decreased with increasing the gap between the outermost tube and the cylindrical shell. It also turns out when the gap between the outermost tube and the cylindrical shell approaches infinite value, the added mass coefficient converges to an asymptotic value of given tube array in a free fluid field.
