  • PURPOSE: Application of an oscillating program for the lower extremities is an effective training method for increasing muscle strength. However, no oscillatory program has yet been identified to confirm the effectiveness of oscillation for balance ability and maximum muscle strength. We investigated the effects of an 8-week vibration exercise program on the maximum muscle strength and balance of the lower extremities. METHODS: Research subjects participating in the study were 22 male and female college students with no past history of diseases of the nervous or musculoskeletal systems. All subjects were randomly divided into two groups and performed their assigned experimental treatment 3 times a week over a period of 20 min for 8 weeks. Maximum strength of the quadriceps extension, flexion, and balance ability were measured using Biodex System 4 and Biodex balance systems. RESULTS: The 8-week oscillation program resulted in a significant increase in quadriceps extension and flexion strength in both male and female participants (p<.05). The balance ability also showed a significant improvement after the oscillation program (p<.05). The balance value was higher for male 17% than for female 21% (p<.05) participants. CONCLUSION: An 8-week oscillation program led to an increase in the strength of knee flexion and extension. The balance ability also improved significantly. This positive effect on balance ability was higher in female than in male subjects.

  • The objective of this investigation is to develop a compliant track link model and apply this model to the multi-body dynamic analysis of high mobility tracked vehicles. Two major difficulties encountered in developing the compliant track models. The first one is that the integration step size must be kept small in order to maintain the numerical stability of the solution. This solution deals with high oscillatory signals resulting from the impulsive contact forces and stiff compliant elements to represent the joints between the track links. The second difficulty is due to the large number of the system equations of motion of the three dimensional multibody tracked vehicle model. This problem was sloved by decoupling the equations of motion of the chassis subsystem and the track subsystems. Recursive methods are used to obtain a minimum set of equations for the chassis subsystem. Several simulation scenarios were tested for the high mobility tracked vehicle including accelaeration, high speed cruising, braking, and turning motion in order to demonstrate the effectiveness and validity of the methods proposed in this investigation.

  • The standard approach to signal resampling is to fit the original image to a continuous model and resample the function at a desired rate. We used the compact B-spline function as the continuous model which produces less oscillatory behavior than other tails functions. In the case of nonuniform resampling based on a B-spline model, the digital signal is fitted to a spline model, and then the fitted signal is resampled at a space varying rate determined by the transformation function. It is simple to implement but may suffer from artifacts due to data loss. The main purpose of this paper is the derivation of optimal nonuniform resampling algorithm. For the optimal nonuniform formulation, the resampled signal is represented by a combination of shift varying splines determined by the transformation function. This optimal nonuniform resampling algorithm can be verified from the experiments that It produces less errors.

  • The hybrid rocket shows interesting characteristics of complicated mixing layer developed by the interaction between turbulent oxidizer flow and injected surface mass flow from fuel vaporization. In this study, the compressible LES was conducted to explore the physical phenomena of surface oscillatory flow induced by the flow interferences in a duct domain. From the numerical results, the wall injection generates the stronger streamwise vorticites and the negative components of axial velocity accompanied with the azimuthal vorticity near the surface. And the vortex shedding with a certain time scale was found to be developed by hydrodynamic instability in the mixing layer. The pressure fluctuations in this calculation exhibit a peculiar peak at a specific angular frequency($\omega$=8.8) representing intrinsic oscillation due to the injection.

  • In this study, blood flow in a carotid artery supplying blood to the human's brain has been numerically simulated to find out how the blood flow affects the genesis and the growth of atherosclerosis and arterial thrombosis. Velocity Profiles and hemodynamic parameters have been investigated for the carotid arteries with three different stenoses under physiological flow condition. Blood has been treated as Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluid. To model the shear thinning properties of blood for non-Newtonian fluid, the Carreau-Yasuda model has been employed. The result shows that the wall shear stress(WSS) increases with the development of stenosis and that the wall shear stress in Newtonian fluid is highly evaluated compared with that in non-Newtonian Fluid. Oscillatory shear index has been employed to identify the time-averaged reattachment point and this point is located farther from the stenosis for Newtonian fluid than for non-Newtonian fluid The wall shear stress gradient(WSSG) along the wall has been estimated to be very high around the stenosis region when stenosis is developed much and the WSSG peak value of Newtonian fluid is higher than that of non-Newtonian fluid.

  • Poly(1,2-propylene glycol adipate) (PPA) was used as an environmentally friendly plasticizer in flexible poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). Thermal, mechanical, and rheological properties of the PVC/PPA blends were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, tensile test, scanning electron microscopy and small amplitude oscillatory shear rheometry. The results showed that PPA lowered the glass transition temperature of PVC. The introduction of PPA could decrease tensile strength and Young's modulus of the PVC/PPA blends; however, elongation-at-break was dramatically increased due to the plastic deformation. The plasticization effect of PPA was also manifested by the decrease of dynamic storage modulus and viscosity in the melt state of the blends. The results indicated that PPA had a good plasticizing effect on PVC.

  • Calcium-binding proteins are thought to play important roles in calcium buffering. The present study investigated the effects of ischemia and reperfusion on calbindin D28K, calretinin, and parvalbumin immunoreactivity in the ganglion cell layer of the rabbit. Rabbits were administered ischemic damage by increasing the intraocular pressure. After 60 and 90 min of ischemia, reperfusion (7 d) was allowed to occur. The b-wave of the electroretinogram (ERG) was reduced by more than 50% and almost 80% in retina given ischemia for 60 and 90 min, respectively. The oscillatory potential (OPs) wave was reduced approximately 50% at 60 min ischemia and 70% at 90 min ischemia. In both normal and ischemic-treated retina, calcium-binding protein immunoreactivity was seen in many cells in the ganglion cell layer. In eyes subjected to 60 min ischemia, there was a decrease of the density of calbindin D28K- (8.29%), calretinin- (14.44%), and parvalbumin- (26.83%) immunoreactive (IR) cells compared to the control retina. In eyes subjected to 90 min ischemia, there was a higher decrease of the density of calbindin D28K- (18.48%), calretinin- (33.59%), and parvalbumin- (54.26%) IR cells than at 60 min. Some calcium-binding protein-IR neurons, especially calretinin-IR neurons, showed aggregations that were abnormally packed together in retina subjected to ischemia for 90 min. The results show that calbindin D28K-, calretinin-, and parvalbumin-IR cells in the ganglion cell layer are susceptible to ischemic damage and reperfusion. The degree of reduction varied among different calcium-binding proteins and ischemic damage times. These results suggest that calbindin D28K-containing neurons are less susceptible to ischemic damage than calretinin- and parvalbumin-containing neurons in the ganglion cell layer of rabbit retina.

  • The objective of the present study is to systematically characterize a linear viscoelastic behavior of petroleum jelly in small amplitude oscillatory shear flow fields correspondent to the rheological ground state. With this aim, using a strain-controlled rheometer, the dynamic viscoelastic properties of commercially available petroleum jelly have been measured at $37^{\circ}C$ (body temperature) over a wide range of angular frequencies at an extremely small strain amplitude of 0.1 %. In this article, the linear viscoelastic behavior was reported in detail and then explained from a structural view-point of petroleum jelly and discussed in depth with respect to the consumer's requirements. Main findings obtained from this study can be summarized as follows : (1) The storage modulus is always greater than the loss modulus over an entire range of angular frequencies studied, meaning that the linear viscoelastic behavior of petroleum jelly is dominated by an elastic nature rather than a viscous nature. (2) Petroleum jelly shows a desirable linear viscoelastic behavior with respect to the consumer's requirements because it is undesirable for the product to flow down from the skin at an initial stage upon contact with the human skin. (3) A fractional derivative model shows an excellent applicability to describe a linear viscoelastic behavior of petroleum jelly. However, this model should be used with a special caution because there exists no physical meaning for the model parameters. (4) A modified form of the Cox-Merz rule gives a good ability to predict the relationship between steady shear flow properties (nonlinear behavior) and dynamic viscoelastic properties (linear behavior) for petroleum jelly.

  • PID controllers are simple in structure and easy for implementation. However, they may produce large overshoots and over-oscillatory responses. Combining PID control with other control techniques often results in advanced hybrid schemes that are able to improve pure PID controllers. This paper proposes hybrid controller for position control system of servo motor. The proposed controller is composed of a subcontroller and a parallel PID controller. The subcontroller improves the transient system performance while the PID controller is mainly responsible for the steady-state system performance. A very promising advantage of this hybrid scheme, in terms of controller synthesis, is that the subcontrollers and controller components can be designed separately. Systematic design methods for various controller components are developed. The proposed hybrid scheme is applied to a DC motor position servo system. The effectiveness of the proposed controller is verified through the computer simulation results.

  • The influence of temperature and calcium concentration on the gelation kinetics of purified Aigeok system has been investigated by small deformation oscillatory measurement. DE(degree of esterification) of the present sample was indicated of low methoxyl Aigeok polysaccharide by FT-IR. The calcium induced gelation of Aigeok has been studied. Both moduli reached the saturation value during the period of experiments. Rate constant increased with increasing calcium concentration, however above 4.08 mM calcium chloride caused a sudden drop in gel strength. The experimental result that the decrease in gel strength at high calcium concentration was seems to be phase separation or competitive inhibition between calcium ions. The storage and loss shear moduli decreased with increasing temperature. The rate constant of Aigeok system remarkably dropped above $35^{\circ}C$. Thus hydrogen bonding is prior to hydrophobic interaction for Aigeok molecule.
