  • A numerical analysis of unsteady motion in solid rocket motors with a nozzle has been conducted. The numerical formulation including modified $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model treats the complete conservation equation for the gas phase and the one-dimensional equations in the radial direction for the condensed phase. A fully coupled implicit scheme based on a dual time-stepping integration algorithm has been adopted to solve the governing equations. After obtaining a steady state solution, pulse and periodic oscillations of pressure are imposed at the head-end to simulate acoustic oscillations of a travelling-wave motion in the combustion chamber. Various steady and unsteady state features in the combustion chamber of a rocket motor has been analyzed as results of numerical calculations.

  • A combustion instability has been one of the most serious problems in the development of combustion devices including rocket engine and gas turbine. In particular, a high-frequency combustion instability generated by resonant coupling between combustion phenomena and acoustic oscillations within thrust chamber causes severe damage to the hardware. Because it is accompanied by high amplitude pressure oscillations and excessive heat flux to the chamber wall. Therefore, combustion instability is one of the difficult problems that must be resolved in developing liquid rocket engine. This paper describes the cases of combustion instability encounted during the development of thrust chamber for KSR-III and KSLV-II.

  • In the present article, we investigate numerically turbulent flow of air through compound rectangular channels. Large eddy simulation(LES) is employed for unsteady turbulence modeling. LES gives better predictions for the axial mean velocity distribution than those of other turbulent models. Strong large-scale quasi-periodic flow oscillations are observed in most of the geometries investigated. Such large-scale flow oscillations in compound rectangular channels are similar to the quasi-periodic flow pulsation through the gaps between fuel rod bundle in nuclear reactor. It exists in any longitudinal connecting gap between two flow channels. The frequency of this flow oscillation is determined by the geometry of the gap. The large scale cross motions through the rectangular compound channels induce significant heat transfer enhancement of the compound channel flow.

  • Unified power flow controller (UPFC) is the most reliable device in the FACTS concept. It has the ability to adjust all three control parameters effective in power flow and voltage stability. In this paper, a linearized model of a power system installed with a UPFC has been presented. UPFC has four control loops that by adding an extra signal to one of them, increases dynamic stability and load angle oscillations are damped. In this paper, after open loop eigenvalue (electro mechanical mode) calculations, state-space equations have been used to design damping controller and it has been considered to influence active and reactive power flow durations as the input of damping controller, in addition to the common speed duration of synchronous generators as input damper signal. To increase stability, further Lead-Lag and LQR controllers, a novel on-line adaptive controller has been used analytically to identify power system parameters. Closed-loop calculations of the electro mechanical mode verify the improvement of system pole placement after controller designing. Suitable operation of adaptive controller to decrease rotor speed oscillations against input mechanical torque disturbances is confirmed by the simulation results.

  • In this paper a robust method is presented for the combined design of STATCOM and Power System Stabilizer (PSS) controllers in order to enhance the damping of the low frequency oscillations in power systems. The combined design problems among PSS and STATCOM internal ac and dc voltage controllers has been taken into consideration. The equations that describe the proposed system have been linearized and a Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) has been designed for the PSS. Then, the Particle Swarm Optimization technique (PSO) which has a strong ability to find the most optimistic results is employed to search for the optimal STATCOM controller parameters. The proposed controllers are evaluated on a single machine infinite bus power system with the STATCOM installed in the midpoint of the transmission line. The results analysis reveals that the combined design has an excellent capability in damping a power system's low frequency oscillations, and that it greatly enhances the dynamic stability of power systems. Moreover, a system performance analysis under different operating conditions and some performance indices studies show the effectiveness of the combined design.

  • Interleaving techniques are widely used to reduce input/output ripples and to increase the power capacity of boost converters operating in critical conduction mode. Two types of phase-shift control schemes are studied in this paper, the turn-on time shifting method and the turn-off time shifting method. It is found that although the turn-off time shifting method exhibits better performance, it suffers from sub-harmonic oscillations at high input voltages. To solve this problem, an intensive quantitative analysis of the sub-harmonic oscillation phenomenon is made in this paper. Based upon that, a novel modified turn off time shifting control scheme for interleaved boost converters operating in critical conduction mode is proposed. An important advantage of this scheme is that both the master phase and the slave phase can operate stably in critical conduction mode without any oscillations in the full input voltage range. This method is implemented with a FPGA based digital PWM control platform, and tests were carried out on a two-phase interleaved boost PFC converter prototype. Experimental results demonstrated the feasibility and performance of the proposed phase-shift control scheme.

  • In this study, a new method using a capacitive sensor and an adaptive filter was proposed to deal with artifacts contaminating an oscillation signal in oscilometric blood pressure measurement. The proposed method makes use of a variation of the capacitance between an electrode fixed to a cuff and an external object to detect artifacts caused by the external object bumping into the cuff. The proposed method utilizes the adaptive filter based on linear prediction to remove the detected artifacts. The conventional method using linear interpolation and the proposed method using the adaptive filter were applied to three types of the artifact-contaminated oscillation signals(no overlap, non-consecutive overlap, and consecutive overlap between artifacts and oscillations) to compare them in terms of the artifact reduction performance. The proposed method was more robust than the conventional method in the case of consecutive overlap between artifacts and oscillations. The proposed method could be useful for measuring blood pressure in such a noisy environment that the subject is being transported.

  • This paper deals with the design of a robust LQC/LTR (Linear Quadratic Gaussian with Loop Transfer Recovery) controller of the TCSC for the power system oscillation damping enhancement. Designing LQG/LTR controller involves several design parameter adjustment processes for performance improvement. this paper proposes a systematic design parameter adjustment procedure which is suitable for robust multi-monde stabilization. The designed controller is verified by nonlinear power system simulation, which shows that the controller is effective for damping power system oscillations.

  • To enable a master-slave control independent microgrid system (MSCIMGS) to supply electricity continuously, the microgrid inverter should perform mode transfer between grid-connected and islanding operations. Transient oscillations should be reduced during transfer to effectively conduct a seamless mode transfer. This study uses a typical MSCIMGS as an example and improves the mode transfer strategy in three aspects: (1) adopts a status-tracking algorithm to improve the switching strategy of the outer loop, (2) uses the voltage magnitude and phase pre-synchronization algorithm to reduce transient shock at the time of grid connection, and (3) applies the hybrid-sensitivity $H_{\infty}$ robust controller instead of the current inner loop to improve the robustness of the controller. Simulations and experiments show that the proposed strategy is more practical than the traditional proportional-derivative control mode transfer and effective in reducing voltage and current oscillations during the transfer period.

  • By using he total variation diminishing (TVD) condition, accurate and upwind based schemes are firstly introduced to develop numerical models free from nonphysical oscillations in the vicinity of large gradients. These models are then applied to both abruptly and smoothly varying initial conditions. By comparing computed predictions to analytical solutions, it is clearly shown that the first-order upwind scheme produces the numerical viscosity and the second-order Lax-Wendroff scheme produces the spurious oscillations. However, the TVD scheme gives the most reasonable results.
