A new complex [$Ni(phen)(C_9H_8Br_2NO_3)_2{\cdot}2CH_3OH{\cdot}2H_2O$] [phen: 1,10-phenanthroline $C_9H_8Br_2NO_3$: 3,5-dibromo-L-tyrosine] was synthesized and characterized by IR, elemental analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction. X-ray crystallography shows that Ni(II) ion is six-coordinated. The Ni(II) ion coordinates with four nitrogen atoms and two oxygen atoms from three ligands, forming a mononuclear Ni(II) complex. The crystal crystallizes in the Orthorhombic system, space group $P2_12_12$ with a = 12.9546 ${\AA}$, b = 14.9822 ${\AA}$, c = 9.9705 ${\AA}$, V = 1935.2 ${\AA}$, Z = 1, F(000) = 1008, S = 0.969, ${\rho}_{calcd}=1.742g{\cdot}cm^{-3}$, ${\mu}=4.688mm^{-1}$, $R_1$ = 0.0529 and $wR_2$ = 0.0738 for 3424 observed reflections (I > $2{\sigma}(I)$). Theoretical study of the title complex was carried out by density functional theory (DFT) method and the B3LYP method employing the $6-3l+G^*$ basis set. The energy gap between HOMO and LUMO indicates that this complex is prone to interact with DNA. CCDC: 908041.

Microwave dielectric properties of $(Pb_{0.2}Ca_{0.8})[(Ca_{1/3}Nb{2/3})_{1-x}Ti_x]O_3$ ceramics were investigated as a function of $Ti^{4+}$ content (0.05$\leq$x$\leq$0.35). A single perovskite phase was obtained from x=0.05 to x=0.15, and $TiO_2$ and $CaNb_2O^6$ were detected as a secondary phase beyond x=0.2. The structure was changed from orthorhombic at x=0.05 to cubic at x=0.35. Dielectric constant(K) was increased with increase of $Ti^{4+}$ content due to increase of rattling effect, and was inversely proportional to the cube of the average radius of B-site cation, however, Qf value was decreased, which was due to the decrease of grain size and the secondary phase. With the increase of $Ti^{4+}$ content, the temperature coefficient of resonant frequency(TCF) was controlled from -27.36 ppm/$^{\circ}C$ value to +18.4 ppm/$^{\circ}C$ value, which was caused by the influence of tolerance factor(t) and the bond valence of B-site. Typically, K of 51.67, Qf of 7268(GHz), TCF of 0 ppm/$^{\circ}C$ were obtained in the $(Pb_{0.2}Ca_{0.8})[(Ca_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})_{0.8}Ti_0.2]O_3$ sintered at 13$50^{\circ}C$ for 3h.
For the purpose of finding new cathode materials for medium-temperature $(700\~800^{\circ}C)$ solid oxide fuel cells, $Gd_{0.8}Ca_{0.2}Co_{1-x}Fe_xO_3,\;(x=0.0\~0.5)$ are prepared, and their thermal stability and conductivity characteristics are investigated. Also, the cathodic activities are measured after the cathode layer being attached on CGO (cerium-gadolinium oxide) electrolyte disk. The X-ray analyses indicate that the materials prepared by calcining the citrate-gels at $800^{\circ}C$ have the orthorhombic perovskite structure without discernible impurities. The thermal stability of the undoped Co perovskite is so poor that it is decomposed to the individual binary oxide even at $1300^{\circ}C$. But the partially Fe-doped cobaltates exhibit a better thermal stability to retain their structural integrity up to $1400^{\circ}C$. The observation whereby both the undoped and Fe-doped cobaltates melt at ca. $1300^{\circ}C$ leads us to perform the electrode adhesion at <$1300^{\circ}C$. The cathodic activity of $Gd_{0.8}Ca_{0.2}Co_{1-x}Fe_xO_3,\;(x=0.0\~0.5)$, electrodes is superior to $La_{0.9}Sr_{0.1}MnO_3$, among the samples of $x=0.0\~0.5$, the x=0.2 cathode shows the best activity for the oxygen reduction reaction. It is likely that the Fe-doping provides a better thermal stability to the materials but in turn imparts an inferior cathodic activity, such that the optimum trade-off is made at x=0.2 between the two factors. The total electrical conductivity and ion conductivity of $Gd_{0.8}Ca_{0.2}Co_{1-x}Fe_xO_3$, are measured to be 51 S/cm and $6.0\times10^{-4}S/cm\;at\;800^{\circ}C$, respectively. The conductivity values illustrate that the materials are a mixed conductor and the reaction sites can be expanded to the overall electrode surface, thereby providing a better cathodic activity than $La_{0.9}Sr_{0.1}MnO_3$.
The $Pb_{0.94}Y_{0.04}[(Zr_{0.6}Sn_{0.4})_{0.915}Ti_{0.085}]O_3$ ceramics which corresponded to the antiferroelectric-ferroelectric phase boundary composition were prepared for digital-type-piezoelectric/electrostrictive device application. Their dielectric, field-induced polarization (P) and strain (X) behaviors were studied with variations in sintering condition and excess PbO content. The orthorhombic structure of specimens was hardly affected either by excess PbO addition or sintering temperature. With increasing excess PbO content, grains tended to be smaller and rounded ones, and the optimum sintering temperature was lowered. Excess PbO addition stabilized the antiferroelectric phase of the specimen effectively, which was confirmed by P-E and X-E analyses. Also the digital-type-strain character was found to be enhanced despite of slight increase in phase transition (AFE-FE) field and electrical resistivity, and decrease in maximum strain. These results were explained in terms of possible lattice defects and domain wall motion.
$SbS_{1-x}Se_xI,\;BiS_{1-x}Se_xI,\;Sb_{1-x}Bi_xSI,\;Sb_{1-x}Bi_xSeI,\;SbS_{1-x}Se_xI:Co,\;BiS_{1-x}Se_xI:Co,\;Sb_{1-x}Bi_xSI:Co$, and $Sb_{1-x}Bi_xSeI:Co$ single crystals were grown by the vertical Bridgman method using the ingots. It has been found that these single crystals have an orthorhombic structure and indirect optical transition. The composition dependences of energy gaps are given by $E_g(x)=E_g(0)-Ax+Bx^2$. The impurity optical absorption peaks due to cobalt deped with impurity are attributed to the electron transitions between the split energy levels of $Co^{2+}$ and $Co^{3+}$ ions sited at $T_d$symmetry of the host lattice.
Poly(${\varepsilon}$-caprolactone) (PCL) nanofibers and PCL/silica membranes were synthesized by sol-gel derived electrospinning and casting, respectively. Smooth PCL nanofibers were obtained from the precursor containing N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF). PCL/silica membranes were prepared by varying the tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) contents from 0 to 40 vol% to investigate the effect of silica addition on mechanical properties and cytotoxicity of the membranes. Although the strength of the membranes decreased from 12 to 8 MPa with increasing the silica content, the strength remained almost constant 7 weeks after dipping in phosphate buffered saline solution (PBS). The strength reduction was attributed to the presence of a patterned surface pores and micro-pores present in the walls between pores. The crystal structure of the membranes was orthorhombic and the crystallite size decreased from 57 to 18 nm with increasing the silica content. From the agar overlay test, the PCL/silica membranes exhibited neither deformation and discoloration nor lysis of L-929 fibroblast cells.
Tantalum-containing metal oxides, well known for their efficiency in water splitting and H2 production, have never been used in visible light driven photodecomposition of H2S and H2 production. The present work is an attempt in this direction and investigates their efficiency. A mixed metal oxide, ZnFe2Ta2O9, with the inclusion of Fe2O3 to impart color, was prepared by the conventional ceramic route in single- and double-calcinations (represented as ZnFe2Ta2O9-SC and ZnFe2Ta2O9-DC respectively). The XRD characterization shows that both have identical patterns and reveals tetragonal structure to a major extent and a minor contribution of orthorhombic crystalline system. The UV-visible diffuse reflection spectra demonstrate the intense, coherent and wide absorption of visible light by both the catalysts, with absorption edge at 650 nm, giving rise to a band gap of 1.9 eV. Between the two catalysts, however, ZnFe2Ta2O9-DC has greater absorption in almost the entire wavelength region, which accounts for its strong brown coloration than ZnFe2Ta2O9-SC when viewed by the naked eye. In photocatalysis, both catalysts decompose H2S under visible light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm) and produce solar H2 at a much higher rate than previously reported catalysts. Nevertheless, ZnFe2Ta2O9-DC distinguishes itself from ZnFe2Ta2O9-SC by exhibiting a higher efficiency because of its greater light absorption. Altogether, the tantalum-containing mixed metal oxide proves its efficient catalytic role in H2S decomposition and H2 production process also.
Green $BaSi_2O_2N_2:0.02Eu^{2+}$ phosphor is synthesized through a two-step solid state reaction method. The first firing is for crystallization, and the second firing is for reduction of $Eu^{3+}$ into $Eu^{2+}$ and growth of crystal grains. By thermal analysis, the three-time endothermic reaction is confirmed: pyrolysis reaction of $BaCO_3$ at $900^{\circ}C$ and phase transitions at $1,300^{\circ}C$ and $1,400^{\circ}C$. By structural analysis, it is confirmed that single phase [$BaSi_2O_2N_2$] is obtained with Cmcm space group of orthorhombic structure. After the first firing the morphology is rod-like type and, after the second firing, the morphology becomes round. Our phosphor shows a green emission with a peak position of 495 nm and a peak width of 32 nm due to the $4f^65d^1{\rightarrow}4f^7$ transition of $Eu^{2+}$ ion. An LED package (chip size $5.6{\times}3.0mm$) is fabricated with a mixture of our green $BaSi_2O_2N_2$, and yellow $Y_3Al_5O_{12}$ and red $Sr_2Si_5N_8$ phosphors. The color rendering index (90) is higher than that of the mixture without our green phosphor (82), which indicates that this is an excellent green candidate for white LEDs with a deluxe color rendering index.

La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 precursor solution were prepared by a sol-gel method. La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 thin films were fabricated by a spin-coating method on a Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrate. Structural and electrical properties with the variation of sintering temperature were measured. All specimens exhibited a polycrystalline orthorhombic crystal structure, and the average thickness of the specimens coated 6 times decreased from about 427 nm to 383 nm as the sintering temperature increased from 740℃ to 830℃. Electrical resistance decreased as the sintering temperature increased. In the La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 thin films sintered at 830℃, electrical resistivity, TCR, B-value, and activation energy were 0.0374 mΩ·cm, 0.316%/℃, 296 K and 0.023 eV, respectively.
25,26,27,28-Tetraacetoxycalix[4]arene·monohydrate is orthorhombic, space group Pbca with a = 14.979(4), b = 15.154(4), c = 27.890(3) ${\AA}$, Z = 8, V = 6330.6 ${\AA}^{-3}$, D$_c$ = 1.28 $g{\cdot}cm^{-3}$, (Mo K${\alpha}$) = 0.71069 ${\AA}$, ${\mu}$ = 0.86 cm$^{-1}$, F(000) = 2600, and R = 0.069 for 3376 unique observed reflections with I > 1.0 ${\sigma}$(I). The structure was solved by direct methods and refined by cascade diagonal least-squares refinement. All the C-H bond lengths(= 0.96 ${\AA}$), the methyl groups and the methylene groups are fixed and refined as the rigid groups with ideal geometry. The macrocycle exists in the 1,3 alternate conformation (by Conforth) making the angles of 110.7, 684, 113.7 and 68.8$^{\circ}$ between the benzene rings and the methylenic mean plane, and four each acetoxy groups are twisted away from their own benzene rings with the angles of 68.2, 97.6, 78.9 and 71.3$^{\circ}$, respectively. The relative dihedral angles between two opposite side of the benzene rings are 135.6$^{\circ}$ for the rings (1) and (3) and 135.2$^{\circ}$ for (2) and (4). A water molecule which has nearly the same height of the methylenic plane of the macrocycle in the c-axis, is located within the distances of 2.942(5) ${\AA}$ from the O(8) atom of the carbonyl group and 2.901 ${\AA}$ from, another O(2)(1/2-x, -1/2+y, z). The shortest contact between the molecule is 3.193 ${\AA}$ from the O(4) to the C(3)(1/2+x, 1/2-y,-z).
