Objectives : This study was aimed to facilitate mutual comprehension between Western and Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM) by analyzing recognition of medical school students on traditional medical prescription and treatment such as herbal medicines and acupuncture. Methods : We conducted a survey targeting medical school students of four medical schools from April through May 2009, and analyzed 208 cases responded. Results : Survey results revealed that medical school students took knowledge of traditional medicine from TV programs and on the Web in general. They thought they had considerable traditional medical knowledge but did not almost understand for professional contents. Regardless of some positive recognition for traditional herbal medicine, negative perspectives were more common and its safety and efficacy on the drug reference were considered as a major reason. On the other hand, recognition on acupuncture was comparatively positive. Scientific data for both herbal medicine and acupuncture are lacking in reality but the attitude only for acupuncture was different. Of the survey respondents, 57.8% had negative attitude against diagnostic methods of TKM and 59.1% opposed to the usage of modern medical equipments by TKM doctors. With regard to the future position of TKM, they tacitly approved that TKM would be absorbed into the complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and importance of TKM objectification, followed by Government's support. Conclusions : Medical school students neither affirm nor deny TKM as a whole but the state of awareness for each item was similar to the physician. In terms of TKM its internal and external innovation would be required to continuously establish objectification of TKM prescription and scientific research on treatment technology.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to analyze the perception that women in 20s and 30s have on Traditional Korean Medical(TKM) treatment on the leukorrhea. Methods: We studied the perception of TKM treatment by questionnaire From October 1 to November 20, 2010. A questionnaire was given to 50 women and we studied 47 except 3 questionnaire which have inappropriate answer. Results: 1. In 47 women, 46(97.9%) women have heard about leukorrhea, 1(2.1%) woman hasn't heard about it. 2. In 32 women who suffered from the leukorrhea, 14(43.8%) women checked up for leukorrhea. 18(56.2%) women doesn't checked. 10 of 14 women took the medical treatment (drug or injection) and 2 of 14 women took the TKM treatment. 3. In 32 women, 16(50.0%) women know about TKM treatment for leukorrhea, 16(50.0%) women don't know. 4. In 32 women, 20(62.5%) women have intention of TKM treatment for leukorrhea, 2(6.2%) women don't have, and 10(31.3%) women don't know. The biggest obstacle was the high cost of TKM treatment. Conclusions: Many women are willing to take TKM treatment on the leukorrhea. We need more accumulation of data for demonstrating the efficacy and safety of TKM treatment.

Objectives: After epidural hemorrhage, sequelae may cause cognitive impairments, such as attention, memory, and performance disturbances. This case study reports on the use of traditional Korean medicine in a patient with cognitive impairments after a traumatic epidural hemorrhage. Methods: During the 46-day hospitalization period, traditional Korean medicine treatments, including Sunkihwalhyul-tang-gamibang, Ukgan-san-gajinpibanha Granule, Kyungohk-go, acupuncture, and cupping, were administered. The degree of cognitive impairment was measured based on the Mini Mental State Examination-Korea (MMSE-K), Modified Barthel Index (MBI), and correct answer ratio. Results: After traditional Korean medicine treatment, the MMSE-K score increased from 13 to 19 and the MBI score increased from 63 to 71. The patient's conversations in daily life also proceeded more smoothly than before hospitalization, and the correct answer ratio rose. Conclusion: This case reports the improvement of cognitive impairment after traumatic epidural hemorrhage in response to traditional Korean medicine treatment; further study is needed.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to make the oriental medical treatment useful, and to develop the ways of acne cure. Methods : Recent paper about Traditional Chinese medicine of acne was analyzed for this studying. Results : According to the latest researches of Acne treatment with Chinese medicine, oriental medical methods to chronic acne were effective. Conclusions : Oriental medical treatment can be classified into 3 parts; internal cure, external cure, and acupuncture therapy. All of these ways were efficacious to cure chronic Acne.

Objectives : This study was designed to report the effect of korean traditional treatment and person-centered counseling for poststroke depression Methods : We treated two patients who scored 37 point and 32 point at Beck's depression inventory each, and 23 point and 22 point at Hamilton rating scale for depression each by korean traditional treatment and person-centered counseling, Results : After treatment, the clinical symptoms were improved and Beck's depression inventory, Hamilton rating scale for depression score were decreased, Conclusions : The result suggest that korean traditional treatment and person-centered counseling is effective in patients with poststroke depression.

Objectives : Recently, the elderly population and dementia prevalence have been rapidly increasing in Korea. Dementia is a concept of syndrome composed of characteristic symptoms. However, there have been no approved treatments for dementia with proven efficacy. Therefore, we investigated Korean traditional treatment being used in clinic and collaborative practice for dementia in the professional group. Methods : We conducted a survey using questionnaires to professors of oriental neuropsychiatry for a month. Items of the questionnaire consisted of overall Korean traditional medical treatment for dementia, which included herbal medicine, acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping, psychotherapy and others. Results : 1. It was shown that Yukmijihwangtanggamibang, Jowiseungcheongtang, Seonghyangjeonggisan have been used the most in herbal medicine. 2. Chechim, Saamchimbeop, and scalp acupuncture have been used the most in acupuncture treatment. 3. In Korean traditional psychotherapy, Ijeongbyeongi, Jieongoronyobeop, Gigongyobeop have been used, and effective in anxiety, agitation, improvement of comprehension for caregiver and environment. 4. Most professors answered that collaborative practice between Korean traditional medicine and western medicine has been needed for dementia. They suggested that herbal medicine, followed by acupuncture, and moxibustion can be used with western medicine simultaneously. Conclusions : The survey revealed that professors use herbal medicine and acupuncture as main treatments for dementia. They share perspective regarding the need of long period to treat dementia patients, and there are needs of collaborative practice for dementia.

Objectives: This study is a report of the clinical application of traditional Korean medicine on ataxia with cerebellar atrophy. Methods: The ataxia in this case occurred 5 years ago. The symptoms had been getting worse until the patient came to hospital. The MRI of this patient showed atrophy of the cerebellum. We measured the state of this case with the Korean version of the Berg Balance Scale (K-BBS), before and after treatment and Numeric Rating Scale-11 (NRS-11) of the symptoms, every week. We treated the case with traditional Korean medicine such as acupuncture and Gamiyukmijihwang-tang. Results: After treatment, the score of K-BBS increased, while the score of NRS-11 decreased. Conclusions: According to this study, traditional Korean medicine is effective for controlling ataxia caused by cerebellar atrophy.

Objective: This clinical study reports on the effectiveness of traditional Korean medicine on a patient with diplopia and eye-movement impairment caused by brain-stem infarction.Method: A patient with diplopia and eye-movement impairment caused by brain-stem infarction was treated with herbal medicine (Bogan-san), acupuncture, and moxibustion. We used the visual analogue scale (VAS) of diplopia and measured the patient's eye-movement range to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment.Results: The diplopia VAS decreased and eye-movement range improved after treatment with traditional Korean medicine.Conclusion: This clinical study suggests that traditional Korean medicine could greatly contribute to the treatment of diplopia and eye-movement impairment caused by brain-stem infarction.

This study is concerned with the patentability and protection of intellectual property rights in Traditional Korea Medicine Paper. The results analyzed significance of patentability by investigated for many kinds of Traditional Korea Medicine Paper. It provide extension of intellectual property rights protection and further research region of TKM field by analysing information of patentability. Recently, In the protection of intellectual property rights, the importance of traditional knowledge resource in many country is increased. It will predict the number of apply for the patent increased annually This study will be provide judging guideline and strategy of intellectual property rights protection by search to detect all existing similar patents in Patent Office (Korea, Japan, U.S.A. EPO) about Traditional Korea Medicine Paper. As a result, It can not be investigated about 33% because of paper research or theoretical study or question investigation etc. But the case of 'The Korea Association of Herbology' and 'The Korean Oriental Medical Ophthalmology & Otolaryngology & Dematology Society' have about 10% rate. If it will be constructed DB system, they will be protected by national treatment.

Objective: This study aimed to analyze the current status of treatments and patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy, and then map out of a strategy for development of generalized-treatments for diabetic peripheral neuropathy in Traditional Korean Medicine. Methods: We selected research materials from various databases such as PubMed, Google, KStudy, KoreanTK, OIM, KOMS and books. Also, to understand current tendencies of medical examination and treatment related with diabetic peripheral neuropathy, we requested Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service clinical data from 2003 to 2007. Results: It is reported that the incidence of diabetic peripheral neuropathy is increasing in an aging society. The medical fees of National Health Insurance related with diabetic peripheral neuropathy show a year-on-year increase. There are no particularly effective therapies for diabetic peripheral neuropathy in Western medicine, and in some papers, it was reported that treatment of diabetic peripheral neuropathy using Traditional Korean Medicine was effective. However, patients usually visit on Western medical center rather than seek Traditional Korean Medicine. To take charge of clinical fields related with diabetic peripheral neuropathy by Traditional Korean Medicine, we need more studies and experiments of diabetic peripheral neuropathy using Traditional Korean Medicine and should make a standardized protocol. Conclusion: Various studies related with diabetic peripheral neuropathy using Traditional Korean Medicine will have to be undertaken hereafter. We expect that Traditional Korean Medicine will play a vital role in treating of diabetic peripheral neuropathy.
