Kinetic and isotherm properties of the cadmium adsorption onto calcium sand and granite soil were evaluated by batch experiments. The pHs of calcium sand and granite soil were 9.51 and 6.33, respectively, showing that the precipitation of heavy metals can be occurred due to the increase of pH when the calcium sand is used as an adsorbent. The pseudo-second-order model described the adsorption kinetics satisfactory with correlation coefficients over 0.999. The equilibrium adsorption capacities of calcium sand and granite soil were 2.10 and 2.16 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption isotherm followed the Freundlich isotherm model, indicating the cadmium adsorbed onto the heterogeneous surfaces of adsorbents.

In order to clarify the impact of Ca-binding sites (Ca1 and 2) on the conformational stability of neutral proteases (NPs), we have analyzed the thermal, pH and organic solvent stability of a NP variant, V189P/A195E/G203D/A268E (Q-mutant), from Salinovibrio proteolyticus. This mutant has shown to bind calcium more tightly than the wild-type (WT) at Ca1 and to possess Ca2. Q-mutant was resisted against autolysis, thermoinactivation and pH denaturation in a Ca-dependent manner and exhibited better activity in organic solvents compared to the WT enzyme. These results imply that Ca1 and Ca2 are important for the conformational stability of NPs.

A time-series sediment trap was deployed at a depth of 1034 m in the eastern Bransfield Strait from December 25, 1998 to December 24, 1999. Particle fluxes showed large seasonal variation; about 99% of the annual total mass flux (49 g m/sup -2/) was collected during the austral summer and fall (January-March). Settling particles consisted primarily of biogenic silica, organic carbon, calcium carbonate, and lithogenic material. Biogenic silica and lithogenic material predominated settling particles, comprising 36% and 30% of the total mass flux, respectively, followed by organic carbon, 11% and calcium carbonate, merely 0.6%. The annual organic carbon flux was 5.4 g C m/sup -2/ at 1000 m in the eastern Bransfield Strait, which is greater than the central Strait flux. The relatively lower flux of organic carbon in the central Bransfield Strait may be caused by a stronger surface current in this region. Organic carbon flux estimates in the eastern Bransfield Strait are the highest in the Southern Ocean, perhaps because of the fast sinking of fecal pellets, which leads to less decomposition of organic material in the water column. Approximately 5.8% of the organic carbon produced on the surface in the eastern Bransfield Strait is exported down to 1000 m; this percentage exceeds the maximum EF/sub 1000/ values observed in the Atlantic and Southern Oceans. The eastern Bransfield Strait appears to be the most important site of organic carbon export to the deep sea in the Southern Ocean.
Silk sericin protein was hydrolyzed by seven proteolytic enzymes in order to examine the effectiveness of the hydrolysates in binding calcium. The amino acid nitrogen content of hydrolysates from Flavourzyme was higher than that for other enzymes, and its calcium binding capacity showed a dose-dependent increase. We examined the effects of calcium binding peptide from sericin hydolysates on the bioavailability of Ca-deficient rats. Three-week-old male rats were fed an Ca-deficient diet for three weeks. Rats were divided into four groups (DD: non-treated group on calcium deficient diet; DD+MC: milk-calcium treated group; DD+OC: organic calcium made using sericin hydolysates; and DD+IC: inorganic calcium ($CaCl_2$). After oral administration of calcium supplements for one week, the calcium content of the serum and liver were significantly higher in DD+OC ($101.7{\mu}g$/mL and $49.3{\mu}g$/mL) and DD+MC ($83.6{\mu}g$/mL and $42.8{\mu}g$/mL) than DD ($86.3{\mu}g$/mL and $43.4{\mu}g$/mL). The alkaline phosphatase (ALP) content in the treated groups was significantly lower than DD, but no significant difference among groups was shown. Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels did not show any significant difference between groups. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels were significantly reduced compared to the DD group. In conclusion, binding calcium to peptides from sericin hydrolysates seems to improve its bioavailability, and to hasten the cure of calcium deficiency in experimental rats.
Field experiments were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of soil solarization at the Nonsan Strawberry Experiment Station, Korea in 2006 and 2008. In in vitro tests, exposure times to achieve an $LD_{100}$ of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. fragariae were 6.6 days and 5.1 days at $45^{\circ}C$ and $50^{\circ}C$, respectively. A 100% lethal temperature was $46.7{\pm}0.1^{\circ}C$ for the same fungus. For field trials, solarization was conducted during the summer season using polyethylene mulch in a plastic house. The organic matter+calcium cyanamide+solarization treatment increased pH, organic matter, and calcium content compared to those before treatment in soil analysis, but no effect had an urea+solarization treatment. The temperatures at 10 cm depth were different in each treatment and the highest temperature was recorded from July 30 to August 10. The average temperature in organic matter+calcium cyanamide+solarization treatment at 10 cm depth was $3{\sim}4^{\circ}C$ higher than that in all the other treatments. All solarization treatments reduced the soil population of F. oxysporum f. sp. fragariae at 100% in 2008 relative to the non-treated control. All solarization treatments reduced Fusarium wilt incidence to 0% in 2006 and 2008. The effect of organic matter+calcium cyanamide+solarization against F. oxysporum f. sp. fragariae indicates that there may be future alternatives to traditional solarization for disease control as well as reducing the time needed.

In this study, we investigated a calcium phosphate-calcium sulfate injectable bone substitute (IBS) with organic reinforcement of chitosan, citric acid and hydroxypropyl-methyl-cellulose (HPMC). The powder component of IBS consisted of tetra calcium phosphate (TTCP), dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD) and calcium sulfate dihydrate (CSD). The liquid component was a solution of citric acid and chitosan. The effect of HPMC in terms of setting time, compressive strength and apatite forming ability on this IBS was investigated. The mass content of HPMC in liquid phase was varied in array of 0%, 2%, 3% and 4%. The setting times obtained between 20 and 45 minutes. Compressive strength was achieved over 20 MPa after incubation at 370C and in 100% humidity for 28 days. Porosities were evaluated in relation with compressive strength. Elastic moduli of the 28 days after-incubation IBS were obtained around 4GPa
A small pot experiment, filled with one hundred fifty gram of Cd amended soil, was conducted in order to learn the effect of combined application of lime and organic matter and of calcium silicate on Chinese cabbage(Brassica pekinensis, Var. Seoul, Heungnong, Miho 70 days). Results obtained are as follows: 1. The application of lime without organic matter depressed the growth of cabbage at the first and second harvests, but, at the later part of third harvest the growth was facilitated so as to harvest very good yield. 2. The combined application of lime and organic matter gave not only a good growth of cabbage from the first crop, but also lowered the cadmium content of dry cabbage bellow that of cabbage harvested from the plot applied with slaked lime alone. Those effect of combined application of both materials were lasted untill the third harvest. 3. Although gave little effect on soil pH, calcium silicate raised a normal good cabbage, and depressed the cadmium content of dry cabbage, by 0.21 me per 100g, which is higher than that of slaked lime plot cabbage, but within the range of no harm to cabbage growth. 4. The control and organic matter plots resulted in a remarkable soil pH drop and high cadmium content in dry cabbage, which lead the crop to a death from the second crop. 5. A negative correlation was observed between the contents of cadmium and calcium in dry cabbage crop, but positive correlations between those of cadmium and magnesium or cadmium and potassium. These relations were grown up as the harvesting were proceeding.
An increased population and rapidly expanding industrial development have led to enormous amounts of various domestic and industrial wastes. The proper disposal of ever-increasing wastes is a growing global problem. Land treatment is one of the rational approaches that are environmentally safe and economically practical. It has long been practised in many sites. Recycling of industrial wastes on agricultural land can provide better possible means for maintaining environmental quality and utilizing waste-resources. Even though industrial wastes are beneficial as soil amendment and fertilizer, they have some limitation on land application because of wide variability as well as physicochemical problem in their composition. A direct application of solid and liquid wastes on land is being practised in Korea and some experimental results are presented. The direct application of fermentation waste on rice resulted in a 6 percent yield increase. Another organic residue from glutamic acid fermentation is widely used not only as a direct application as a liquid fertilizer but also for a raw material of organic compound fertilizer. These wastes are much promising as sources of plant nutrients, since they have large amounts of nutrients, especially nitrogen with few toxic metals. On the other hand, fertilizers developed from inorganic industrial wastes include calcium silicate, calcium sulfate and ammonium sulfate. The calcium silicate fertilizer simply produced from slag, by-product of iron and steel manufacturing plant is one of the most successful example of the conversion of wastes to fertilizer and slag production capacity totals to over three million MT/year. About 200,000 MT of calcium silicate fertilizer is currently applied in the paddy rice every year. Calcium sulfate, a waste from the wet phosphoric acid process is to some extent used as a filler of compound fertilizers but quite large quantites are directly applied for the reclamation of tidal flat.
Research was initiated in greenhouse to investigate effects of polymer, calcium, perlite and chitosan on the growth of Kentucky bluegrass (KB). A total of 24 treatment combinations were used in the study. Treatments were made of water-swelling polymer (WSP), calcium, perlite, and chitosan in soil organic amendment (SOA). Significant differences were observed in germination rate, turfgrass coverage, turfgrass density and top growth among treatments. Germination rate, density and plant height varied with time after seeding. A proper mix of WSP is considered to be lower than 3% for turfgrass coverage and density. Regarding survival capability and top growth, however, it was good under 6%. Overall KB growth was more influenced by calcium and perlite than chitosan. Calcium and perlite were the most effective elements for early survival capacity and turfgrass density, respectively. But no effect was found by chitosan. Top growth increased with three elements, being perlite > calcium > chitosan. The chitosan was effective in early germination, but there was no effect on top growth until 3 weeks, when compared with others. A further study is needed for investigating the effect of these materials on the growth characteristics in mixtures of sand and SOA before a field application.
In order to determine the effects of bedrock, organic matter, calcium and iron oxide on the soil aggregation, this research has performed with soils from bedrock regions of Limestone, Granite and Granite gneiss. This research was also to estimate how organic matter, calcium and iron oxide influence on soil aggregation under different forest conditions in various bedrock regions. And it also had a purpose to rate physical factors relevant to soil aggregation, their characteristics and aggregate diameter which closely relates to stabilities in the process of soil erosion. The following conclusions have been drawn in response to the overall research objectives. The rates of the soil aggregation on different bedrock regions were 21% in Limestone bedrock, 19.8% in Granite bedrock and 9.9% in Granite gneiss bedrock. A main factor in soil aggregation was the orgainc matter content in soils and the rate of soil aggregation increased in the constant proportion with the organic matter content. The relation could be formulated into Y=4.31X-4.37(Y : aggregation ratio X : organic matter content). The soil aggregation ratio under the deciduous forests eras higher than that under the coniferous forests. It was considered that this resulted from differences in organic matter content. Soil aggregates with larger diameter than 0.5mm were found more in Limestone bedrock than other smaller size soil aggregates of 0.25mm diameter were more distributed in Granite gneiss bedrock. Granite bedrock region had normal distribution in soil aggregate sizes with the highest frequency of 0.5mm diameter. Calcium and iron oxides had only partial influences on the soil aggregation in some specific conditions. But in Limestone bedrock region calcium influenced on the soil aggregation with the organic matter content.
