A Clinical Study about Effectiveness of Essential Oil-Containing Dental Paste in Controlling Oral Malodor (아로마 함유 치약이 구취에 미치는 영향에 관한 임상적 연구)

  • Since many reports for the influence of the essential oils on the oral microorganism were presented, it is important to use the essential oils in clinical field. At the present day which emphasized the quality of life, oral malodor is one of the serious problems, so we need to try to decrease of oral malodor. This study was designed to make on evidence of the effect of essential oils to oral malodor clinically and to develop on effective treatment for oral malodor by using the dental paste which contains essential oils. 40 dental students volunteered to participate in this study and double blind test was used. At the beginning, all subjects were measured their morning malodor prior to this experiment, at the 3cm posterior to their incisal edge of the oral cavity by Halimeter(Interscan Co. Chatsworth, CA). After that we divided the students in half into two groups A and B. We have supplied different tooth pastes, dental paste A and B, to two groups respectively. The dental paste B contained essential oils which are tea tree, lemon and peppermint. All students used different tooth pastes everyday for 3 weeks. And all students were measured their morning malodor every week with the same method by using Halimeter. This study was resulted that ; 1. The dental paste which contains essential oils has continuously decreased the morning malodor during the whole period of experiments. 2. The number of students with increase in their morning malodor was generally decreased in the group B who used the toothpaste which contains essential oils, compared with the group A who used the toothpaste which didn't contain essential oils on the 2nd and 3rd week of the experiment. 3. In the group B, the average data on increasing rate of morning malodor was less than in the group A. 4. In the 2nd and 3rd week of the experiment, the data on the rate of morning malodor of the group B was generally decreased continuously compared with the group A. These results have statistically significance under 95% confidence interval of the difference.(p$\leq$0.05) As the result, the toothpaste which was containing essential oils was effective in decreasing the morning malodor.

  • Putrefactive activity within the oral cavity is the principal cause of halitosis. The most common intraoral sites of oral malodor production are tongue, interdental and subgingival areas. The other foci may include faulty restorations, sites of food impaction and abscesses. Periodontal disease frequently involves pathological oral malodor, which is caused mainly by volatile sulfur compounds(VSC), such as hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, and dimethyl sulfide. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the association between oral malodor and periodontal status. Volatile sulfur compounds in mouth air were estimated by portable sulfide monitor($Halimeter^{TM}$). The results were as follows : 1. The levels of volatile sulfur compounds were significantly greater in a periodontitis group than in a control group(P<0.01). The amounts of VSC in mouth air from patients with periodontal involvement were four times greater than those of the control group. 2. The significant positive correlation was found between VSC concentrations and the number of pocket depth above 4mm(P<0.01), but correlation between VSC concentrations and plaque score was not statistically significant(P>0.05). 3. In the periodontitis group, VSC concentrations of pre-treatment significantly decreased after scaling and root planing(P<0.01). 4. No statistically significant correlation was found between VSC concentrations and sex / age in the periodontitis group. The above results indicate that periodontal disease may play a role as an important factor of oral malodor and deep periodontal pockets are a source of volatile sulfur compounds.

Effect of a Mouthwash Containing Cetylpyridinium and Zinc Chloride on Oral Malodor (세틸피리디늄(Cetylpyridinium) 및 염화아연(Zinc chloride)을 함유한 구강 양치액의 구취제거 효과에 대한 연구)

  • The aim of this study is to clinically evaluate the effect of a mouthwash containing cetylpyridinium and zinc chloride on reduction of morning oral malodor in healthy subjects measured by organoleptic measurement and a portable sulfide monitor. A total of 8 healthy non-smoking male volunteers were enrolled in this study of crossover design consisting of two experimental phases. The subjects were instructed to rinse the mouth with 10 mL of the experimental mouthwash containing cetylpyridinium and zinc chloride for 30 seconds at the first phase. At the second phase after a one-week washout period, each subject rinsed with distilled water as a control. All experiments were conducted at around 8:30 a.m. and oral malodor was measured using organoleptic measurement and a portable sulfide monitor just before rinsing with the experimental mouthwash or control (baseline), 1 hr, 2 hrs, and 3 hrs after rinsing. The mouthwash containing cetylpyridinium and zinc chloride reduced morning oral malodor up to 3 hrs after rinsing. Organoleptic score and concentrations of volatile sulfur compounds after use of the experimental mouthwash significantly decreased with time, and the decreases were significantly different between the mouthwash and control. In conclusion, the mouthwash containing cetylpyridinium and zinc chloride is significantly effective on reduction of morning oral malodor in healthy subjects by 3 hrs.

Treatment Efficacy on Oral Malodor according to Pre-treatment Volatile Sulfur Compound Level (구취의 심도에 따른 치료 효과에 대한 비교 연구)

  • Considering various factors contributing oral malodor, the accurate prediction of prognosis is very important to both clinician and patients. The present study has been performed to invetigate the relationship between treatment effeicacy and pre-treatment volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) level. Ninety patients were divided into three groups, A(<150ppb), B(150< <200ppb), and C(>200ppb) groups, according to pre-treatment VSC level detected by Halimeter, and each group included 30 patients. Routine therapeutic measures for oral were provided to each patient which consisted of oral prophylaxis, tooth brushing and flossing instruction, tongue scraping by proper device, and gargling of 0.25% ZnCl2 Solution. The group with high pre-treatment VSC level (>150ppb) showed significant reduction of VSC level at 1 and 3 weeks after. However, the group with low pre-treatment VSC level (<150ppb) did not show any significant reduction during the experimental periods. Collectively, the results suggested that patients with high pre-treatment VSC level show better prognosis.

  • Oral malodor in companion animals is noticed by owners at first and it makes owners unpleasant. Therefore oral malodor affects the relationship between pet and owner. Oral malodor is produced by some putrefactive bacteria which putrefy proteins to volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) such as methyl mercaptan, hydrogen sulfide and dimethyl sulfide in the food remnants. And oral malodor is mostly consisted with these VSC. On oral examinations in dogs with oral malodor, it is common that plaque and calculus index were increased than normal dogs'. But organoleptic method is subjective to evaluate halitosis, in this study we measured VSC using organoleptic method and portable sulfide monitor to clarify the relationship between halitosis and periodontal disease in dogs with halitosis. And we found that plaque index and calculus index were significantly related with VSC (P<0.05, P<0.05) in measurement using Halimeter. However there was not significant relationship between gingivitis index and VSC. In conclusion, there was the significant, positive relationship between periodontal disease and halitosis.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between personality type and oral hygiene controllability. Methods: Four hundred eighty-two college students in Gyeonggi-do completed the Myers-Briggs type indicator (MBTI) and a questionnaire and collected data were analyzed by SAS 9.2 program. Results: Compared to extroverted subjects, a significantly increased percentage of introverted subjects demonstrated oral malodor and stress (p<0.05). Tongue coating and stress seemed to occur the most frequently in intuition-feeling (NF) type, while oral malodor seemed to occur the most frequently in sensation-feeling (SF) type among four fuctional types. Tongue coating and stress seemed to occur the most frequently in NF type, while oral malodor seemed to occur the most frequently in sensation-perceiving (SP) type among four temperaments. Significantly increased mean scales of tongue scraping index and oral hygiene controllability index were found for extroverts (p<0.05). Mean scales of tooth brushing index and oral hygiene controllability index appeared to be the highest in NF type among four fuctional types. Mean scales of tongue scraping index and oral hygiene controllability index appeared to be the highest in sensation-judging (SJ) type among four temperaments. Conclusions: Oral hygiene controllability was associated with personality type and it is necessary to develop oral health education program considering personality type.

  • Recently there is much interest in the antibacterial activity of nano-sized silver particle (nanosilver) since silver is known to be safe and effective as disinfectant for a long time. Oral malodor is considered to originate in the oral cavity primarily as a result of production of malodorous compounds by oral bacteria. Major compounds responsible for oral malodor are volatile sulfur compounds, which is thought to be generated by the G(-) anaerobic bacteria found normally in the oral cavity, especially on the dorsum of the tongue. The purposes of this study were to investigate the effect of nanosilver on growth of oral malodor generating microorganisms, including Fusobacterium nucleatum, Prevotella melaninogenica, Klebsiella pneumonia, and to determine the optimal culture condition of them. The results were as follows: 1. The optimal culture condition for P. melaninogenica was vacuum culture using desiccator after evacuation of air by vacuum pump in chopped beef meat media. 2. The growth of K. pneumonia was temporarily inhibited by nanosilver (5 ppm and 10 ppm). 3. The morphological alteration and cell damage caused by nanosilver were observed in K. pneumonia.

Inhibitory Effect of Respective Herbs in Cheonggugamrosu on Oral Malodor Using Malodor Modeling of the Salivary Sediment System (타액침전물모델을 이용한 청구감로수 구성약물의 구취억제작용)

  • Objective: This study assessed five respective herbs in Cheonggugamrosu (CGGRS) for ability to inhibit malodor in vitro. Methods: We used malodor modeling of the salivary sediment system. Incubation mixtures were prepared with sediment at 16.7% (v/v), amino acids (cysteine and tryptophan) at 6mM and either herb extract at 1% (w/v) or water as control. Mixtures were incubated at $37^{\circ}C$ and odor was monitored organoleptically and for volatile sulfur compounds with the Halimeter. Indole/skatole was determined by Kovac's colorimetric method. Results: Two of the herbs, Caryophilli Flos and Glycyrrhizae Radix, had inhibitory effect on malodor generation. Both of them significantly reduced VSC, organoleptic odor and indole/skatole formation (p<0.05). Conclusions: We found Caryophilli Flos and Glycyrrhizae Radix played a main role in CGGRS. Both herbs have potential as effective anti-malodor agents and this suggests they are worthy of further exploration.

The Influence of Auxiliary Goods and Tooth Brushing for the Reduction of Oral Malodor (잇솔질과 구취감소보조용품제가 구취감소효과에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out to see the effect of dental auxiliary product groups being used in case of not being able to brush teeth. This study was executed for 70 students in the Dept. of Dental Hygiene of S Health College, and it was divided into the group which used brushing teeth, the one which used only dental auxiliary products, the one which did onion juice gargle, etc, and measured the effect on the reduction of oral malodor. The experimental results of the study were as below. 1) After onion juice gargle, in the experimental group A which brushed teeth, it showed lasting decrease of oral malodor until 20min since the experiment, and after 30min, the degree of oral malodor started to increase again. 2) After onion juice gargle, the result of the experimental group B which took only supplementary products such as garglin, chewing gum, intaking green tea with roasted rice & brushing a tongue and so on, was as follows. First, in case of experimental group BG which used garglin, until 30 min has passed since the experiment, it showed the lasting reduction of oral malodor as the same trend with the experimental group BG. Second, in chewing gum (experimental group BC), intaking green tea with roasted rice (experimental group BT), and brushing a tongue (experimental group BO), continuous reduction of oral malodor was shown until 10minutes has passed since the experiment, but, after 20minutes, we could see the degree of oral malodor started to increase again. 3) After onion juice gargle, in the experimental group C which only the degree of oral malodor was measured with the passage of time, neither brushing teeth nor using auxiliary goods, until 30min since the experiment, it showed the similar trend of the reduction of oral malodor with other experimental groups, but, it showed high degree of oral malodor, as compared with other experimental groups A and B.

A study of oral malodor of denture wearers (의치장착자의 구취발생에 관한 연구)

  • In order to investigate the amount of oral malodor of denture wearers, concentration of volatile sulfur compounds of 20 denture wearers(10 male, 10 female) was measured by Halimeter(RH-17, Interscan, CA, USA) at following four conditions ; condition 1(with denture) : male - $415.0{\pm}90.1$, female - $430.9{\pm}101.3$ condition 2(immediately after denture removal) : male - $291.4{\pm}35.5$, female - $259.8{\pm}20.4$ condition 3(with denture after 30 minutes immersing in chlorhexidine) :male - $210.1{\pm}25.7$, 여자 - $197.4{\pm}22.2$ condition 4(with denture after 24 hours immersing in chlorhexidine) : male - $120.1{\pm}35.2$, 여자 - $109.2{\pm}20.0$ There was no sexual difference, but, value at the condition 1 showed statistically significant difference from the others(p<0.05). It is dentists' responsibility and privilege to understand and diagnose the strong association between mouth and oral malodor and treat it.
